PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Ray Hoola (ranked 4911 p4p, 4968 weight class) and Jamie Newman (ranked 371 p4p, 372 weight class). Hoola comes into the arena with Alvin & The Chipmunks - Christmas song blaring out of the sound system. Ray Hoola has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ray Hoola!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jamie Newman!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Joseph Jones and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Newman throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Hoola throws a body punch but Newman moves out of range.

Hoola moves into range and clinches up with Newman.
Hoola lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.

Newman manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Hoola is fighting to break Newman's control of his arms but Newman is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Newman not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Newman is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hoola controls from within his opponent's guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Newman is on top in guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Newman throws a big elbow that misses.
Hoola is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Newman wants to pass the guard but Hoola is keeping the position.

Newman stands up from Hoola's guard - Newman perhaps looking for a knockout.
Hoola dips down and scores with a jab to the body.

Newman pushes Hoola up against the cage in a clinch.
Hoola jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Newman walks away with a smile on his face. Hoola gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Newman slips a straight right by Hoola.

Newman closes the distance and pushes Hoola back into the cage.
Hoola will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Newman up against the cage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hoola goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Hoola swings wildly with an uppercut but Newman uses good head movement to avoid it.

Newman breaks the clinch.
Newman's coach down at Canadian Combat Academy was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Newman's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Newman moves out of range as Hoola strikes.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Newman is defended easily by Hoola.
Hoola was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.

Newman has Hoola up against the cage in a clinch.

Hoola lands with a short shot to the head.
Hoola tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.

Hoola lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Hoola keeps control of Newman as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
The referee calls for Newman to work.

Newman escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Hoola gets tackled into the cage by Newman. Newman maintains the clinch.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Newman blocks a body shot from Hoola.

Hoola tries a body shot but Newman blocks it.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Jamie Newman will probably get the nod.
That's time! Hoola's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

and Hoola moves into the clinch.
Hoola tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Newman works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.

Hoola controls Newman momentarily but Newman frees himself.

Hoola escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Newman gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Hoola wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Hoola is trying to hold Newman in close to prevent damage but Newman has managed to pass into half guard.

Hoola knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Newman on the ground.

Newman wants to control the pace but Hoola is squirming around nicely.
Hoola tries to improve his position but instead Newman has taken his back!
Newman throws a big right hand but he misses and hits the mat. Ouch.
Newman has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Newman controlling the position well here. Hoola rolled but Newman kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.

Newman somehow managing to miss with a strike from the back.
Newman misses with a punch to the head.
Newman has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Newman is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Hoola defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

Newman is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Hoola knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Hoola for a finish.

Newman is working on the RNC. He looks like he's got it but Hoola won't tap... Oh, he's out! The ref rips Newman off his unconscious opponent!
