PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Derrick Bradley (ranked 97 p4p, 357 weight class) and Derrick Lewis (ranked 17 p4p, 59 weight class). Bradley kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Sudbury Saturday Night. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Derrick Bradley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 18 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Derrick Lewis!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Don Winkell and Percy O'Donnell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bradley dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Lewis. That did some damage!
Bradley scores with a jab to the jaw.
Bradley displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Lewis.
Lewis doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Bradley counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Bradley fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Lewis is out of range.
Lewis lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
A looping hook to the body misses from Bradley. Lewis does a little dance to reset his feet.
Bradley looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Lewis fails with a takedown attempt.
An attempted straight right counter from Bradley misses the target.
Derrick Bradley has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Derrick Lewis.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Lewis is pushing down on Bradley's leg trying to pass to half guard. Bradley is fighting to maintain full guard but Lewis has managed to sneak the leg through.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fighters are battling for position here. Bradley manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Bradley holds on and takes a little breather.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Bradley can't keep his opponent in guard - Lewis advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Lewis is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Bradley doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Lewis.
Bradley knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Lewis on the ground.

Lewis tries to free his leg and advance position but Bradley is retaining full guard.

Lewis seems to be working for a kimura but Bradley defends the submission attempt.
Lewis is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Lewis forces his way into half guard.

Lewis is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Bradley has managed to free his arm - good work.
Bradley is pressing down on Lewis's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

A close round but Derrick Lewis will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

A little jabbing left from Lewis on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Lewis shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Bradley lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.

It looks like Derrick Lewis has been cut.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bradley throws an overhand right that lands on Lewis's shoulder, as Lewis tries to avoid the shot.
Bradley swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Lewis has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.
Bradley misses with a hook. Lewis ducked under it nicely.

Lewis avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Bradley connects with a looping right hand.
Bradley throws out a loose jab but Lewis uses good head movement to avoid it.

Lewis closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Bradley did well to prevent Lewis getting side control.

Lewis is looking for a kimura but Bradley is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Lewis to get the leverage.
Bradley is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Lewis can do to turn this around?
Lewis is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Bradley reverses the position - he's now on top in Lewis's guard.

Lewis is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Bradley is aware though and is defending well.
Lewis is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Bradley wants to control from the top but Lewis keeps moving.

Bradley is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Lewis looking for subs off his back but Bradley has passed one foot through into half guard.
Bradley is taking a breather. Lewis says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Lewis makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Lewis.
Bradley sitting in guard, not really doing much.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Lewis not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Bradley here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
Bradley tries to free his leg and advance position but Lewis is retaining full guard.

Bradley wants to control from the top but Lewis keeps moving.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Lewis avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Lewis only half commits to the counter leg kick.

Lewis wants to clinch up but Bradley keeps it at a distance.

Derrick Bradley dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Derrick Lewis's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

The fight stays on the outside here - Lewis looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Bradley throws a lazy right hand but Lewis sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

Lewis is trying to counter with his kicks.
Bradley throws a front kick aimed at Lewis's knee but Lewis avoids it well.

and Bradley counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Lewis throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Bradley was covering up waiting for the punch and Lewis finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Lewis fails to move to back control.

Lewis has hold of Bradley's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Bradley manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Derrick Lewis has got the better of the ground game so far.
Lewis wants to control the action but instead Bradley gets a body lock and reverses into Lewis's guard! Nice work!
Lewis is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Bradley's corner is telling him to maintain position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Lewis working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Bradley doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Bradley manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Bradley has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Lewis wants to hit a sweep here but Bradley passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Lewis there!

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Derrick Bradley.
I think Bradley has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
