PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Rufino Gracie (ranked 1586 p4p, 1957 weight class) and Wingers Son (ranked 88 p4p, 108 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Rufino Gracie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Wingers Son!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, Phil Schofield and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Son with a jab.
Son tries to score with a low kick but Gracie moves his leg out of the way.
Gracie chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Son can pounce on him.
Gracie checks a low kick from Son.
A swing and a miss from Son.
Gracie on the wrong end of a nice hook.
Son misses with a two punch combination.
Son uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Gracie.
Son throws a good cross that connects.
A big left from Son misses.
Gracie throws a low kick but Son moves out of range easily.
Son swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Son stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Son looks to land a body kick but Gracie moved away.
Gracie walks into a straight right hand from Son.
Gracie on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Gracie checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
Son throws a good cross that connects.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Son moves out of range of the strikes.
Son throws an overhand right that lands on Gracie's shoulder, as Gracie tries to avoid the shot.
Son throws a hook but Gracie blocks it.
Gracie half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Gracie wants to clinch up but Son keeps it at a distance.
Gracie slips under a jab.
Gracie changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Son scores with a crisp jab that stopped Gracie in his tracks.
Son has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Son throws the left hand but Gracie avoids the punch easily.
Gracie is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Son.
Son jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Son scores with a body shot.
Son misses with a low kick.
Gracie tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Son manages to circle out of the way.
Son thuds his right hand into Gracie's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Son is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Son smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Son looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Gracie tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Son throws a body punch but Gracie moves out of range.
Son misses the body punch

and Gracie decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Son's guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Gracie with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Gracie is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Gracie stops Son from standing up.
Son is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Gracie scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Gracie has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Gracie stops Son from standing up.
Gracie working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Son's head.
Son keeping moving, preventing Gracie from controlling successfully.
Gracie stays in close to Son's body and controls the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gracie is in close to Son's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Son is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Gracie pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Son is keeping the position for now.
Son wants to stand and escape but Gracie is having none of it.
Gracie is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Son wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Gracie manages to pass to side control.
Gracie trying to control from half guard but Son is working away.
Son felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Son pushes Gracie off looking to stand but Gracie dives back in and keeps control.

Son is defending against the submission attempts here by Gracie.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Son looks like he's trying to stand up.
Gracie looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Son wants to get back to his feet.
Son tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Gracie manages to move to mount!
Son is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.

Gracie is working to isolate an arm here. It's a telegraphed submission attempt but he's gone for it anyway - and he's got it! Gracie extends the arm and Son is forced to tap!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Rufino Gracie!
Our winner, Rufino Gracie, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
