PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Eli Vieira (ranked 2501 p4p, 2762 weight class) and Dustin Mcfaul (ranked 304 p4p, 331 weight class). Mcfaul is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: What's Poppin?. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Eli Vieira!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Dustin Mcfaul!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Donald Grub and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vieira connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Vieira missing with a left hand there. Mcfaul was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Mcfaul is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
Vieira misses with an uppercut
and Mcfaul cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Vieira misses with an uppercut. Mcfaul saw that one coming.
Vieira tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Mcfaul swivels and escapes.
Vieira looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Vieira throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Vieira is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

and Vieira counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Vieira has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Vieira seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Mcfaul does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Vieira swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Mcfaul is now in Vieira's guard. A big mistake from Vieira there, giving up the dominant position!
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Mcfaul can do anything to dispel that myth.
Vieira is looking to advance position but Mcfaul won't allow it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Mcfaul is refusing to be controlled, as Vieira sits in half guard.
Vieira moves nicely into side control.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mcfaul looks to throw the jab but Vieira is out of range.
Mcfaul fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Vieira on the side of the head.
Dustin Mcfaul seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Vieira closes the distance and clinches up with Mcfaul, looking for a takedown. Vieira pushes Mcfaul against the cage but Mcfaul circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Mcfaul bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Vieira's head.

Vieira misses with a hook. Mcfaul ducked under it nicely.
Mcfaul lunges at Vieira with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Vieira's hand.
Vieira tries to score a power double leg takedown but Mcfaul sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Vieira somewhat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Eli Vieira. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Mcfaul rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Vieira moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Mcfaul drops his hands momentarily and Vieira takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.

It looks like Dustin Mcfaul has been cut.
Mcfaul swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Vieira.

Vieira loads up on a big right hand but Mcfaul slips the punch.

and Vieira counters with a lovely straight right hand!

Vieira looks to land a right hand but Mcfaul moved out of range.
Dustin Mcfaul is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Mcfaul cracks Vieira with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Vieira is trying to control. Mcfaul wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Vieira thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Mcfaul's head.
Mcfaul really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Vieira. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Mcfaul is squirming around, avoiding Vieira's attempts to control the action.
Vieira lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Eli Vieira overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Vieira throws some wild stikes that Mcfaul manages to avoid easily.
Mcfaul felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Vieira unloads with some shots from mount but Mcfaul bucks and avoids them well.
Vieira wants to control the pace but Mcfaul is squirming around nicely.
Vieira throws a sloppy strike and Mcfaul uses the opportunity to reverse the position! A bit of a scramble here and Mcfaul has ended up in Vieira's guard.

Mcfaul stands over his opponent and dives in with a flying punch! Vieira throws up his legs and catches Mcfaul in a triangle! Oh this looks tight! Mcfaul tries to escape but he's forced to tap! Wow, fantastic work there by Vieira! That came out of nowhere!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:35 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Eli Vieira!
Eli Vieira took to the mic after the fight and begged the organizational hierarchy for a shot at the title.
