Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jubei Akechi (ranked 599 p4p, 1093 weight class) and Toby Vertongen (ranked 90 p4p, 151 weight class). Jubei Akechi has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 9 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jubei Akechi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Toby Vertongen!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Chris Downing and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A big left from Akechi misses.
Vertongen misses with a body shot.
Akechi looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

Akechi has his foot on Vertongen's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Vertongen works his way back into a safe position though.

Vertongen is fighting to break Akechi's control of his arms but Akechi is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Akechi has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Vertongen can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Akechi takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Vertongen throws a series of strikes that have Akechi backpedaling.

A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Akechi wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Vertongen is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Akechi pulls his head out easily.

Akechi is nestled in close to Vertongen, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Vertongen has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.

Akechi looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Vertongen with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Toby Vertongen has got the better of the ground game so far.
Vertongen has hold of Akechi's hands but Akechi slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Vertongen pulls Akechi in close to his closed guard and prevents Akechi from doing any damage or advancing position.

Vertongen's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Akechi connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Vertongen scrambles back to his feet.

Akechi throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Vertongen was covering up waiting for the punch and Akechi finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Akechi got a little sloppy there for a moment and Vertongen has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Akechi has managed to get both his arms back between Vertongen's legs - danger averted.

Vertongen manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Akechi manages to get himself to full guard.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Akechi has momentary wrist control but Vertongen slips an elbow through the middle.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Akechi is on top in guard.


Vertongen had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Akechi defends it easily.

Vertongen escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Akechi gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Akechi stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Vertongen swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That was a close round but Jubei Akechi did the better work so I'd imagine he'll take it.

Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Vertongen lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Akechi has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Akechi and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
