PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Everest Frank (ranked 1232 p4p, 1276 weight class) and Deontologicus Smiff (ranked 183 p4p, 193 weight class). Frank comes to the cage accompanied by Knife Talk x Drake ft. 21 Savage x Project Pat. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Everest Frank!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Deontologicus Smiff!
The judges for this bout are James Glass, Daniel Bishop and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smiff throws a shot from downtown. Frank moves away and avoids it.
Smiff throws a front kick aimed at Frank's knee but Frank avoids it well.
Frank closes this distance looking for a takedown but Smiff circles away.

Frank drives through with a takedown into guard.
Frank content to stall in guard here.
Frank postures up and lands a big shot to Smiff's brow.

Frank avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Smiff looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smiff looking to hit a scissor sweep but Frank is one step ahead there.
Frank throwing strikes but missing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Frank working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Frank tries to free his leg and advance position but Smiff is retaining full guard.
Frank preventing the sweep.
Smiff can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Frank controls the pace.
Frank stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Smiff swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Smiff is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Frank defends well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Smiff not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Frank has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Frank won't allow Smiff to sweep him here.
Frank is looking to work some ground and pound but Smiff has wrist control.
Smiff striking off his back but it's not causing Frank any problems.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Frank trying to control but Smiff is working from the bottom.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Frank shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Frank stalling away here and it's allowed Smiff to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
We've been hearing that Frank has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.

Frank is stalling in the full guard.
Smiff pulls Frank in to control the position.
Frank controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Smiff has his foot on Frank's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Frank works his way back into a safe position though.
Frank works over Smiff with some ground and pound from guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Frank slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Frank wants to control from the top but Smiff keeps moving.
Smiff wants to sweep but no luck.
Smiff lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Smiff trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Smiff throws a strike but Frank rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Everest Frank dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Frank tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Smiff swivels and escapes.
Frank is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Smiff can do to turn this around?
Frank looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Smiff is fending him off so far but Frank persists. Nope, Smiff circles away and we're back to standing.
Smiff displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Frank.
Smiff unleashes a big counter combination but Frank bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Everest Frank. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Frank has a takedown stuffed.
Smiff looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Frank shoots for a double leg takedown but Smiff sprawls well. He's pushed Frank's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Frank tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Smiff was well out of range. Poor timing from Frank.
Frank shoots in for a takedown but Smiff shows good takedown defense.
Frank walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.

It looks like Everest Frank has been cut.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Frank fails with a takedown attempt.
Frank goes for a double leg but Smiff avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Smiff continues to drive forward.
Frank blocking some punches.

Smiff wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Frank jumps guard but Smiff turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Smiff has clasped his hands together around Frank's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Frank is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Smiff throws an elbow but Frank slips to the side and avoids it well.
Smiff trying to control the position but Frank is working away.
Smiff misses with the ground and pound.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Frank parries the strikes from Smiff easily there. Smiff is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Frank to escape.

Smiff is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Frank has escaped the position, nice work there.
Smiff misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Smiff works to advance to full mount. Frank defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Smiff looking to ground and pound but Frank is blocking nicely.
Frank is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Frank working to try and regain half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Frank taking shots to the head.
Frank tries to hold on but Smiff postures up.
Frank is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.
Smiff thowing shots but they're missing.
Frank is desperately trying to improve his position but Smiff has a good base and remains in mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Smiff throwing strikes here but Frank is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
Frank is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Smiff thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.

Frank tries to improve his position but Smiff has taken his back! Smiff has a choke - it's sunk in pretty tight... Will Frank tap? No... maybe... yes! He's tapped! Smiff pushes Frank away and gets up to celebrate with his corner!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:41 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Deontologicus Smiff!
A very excited looking Deontologicus Smiff made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
