PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Georges Moxley (ranked 26 p4p, 57 weight class) and Jubei Akechi (ranked 6 p4p, 12 weight class). Moxley's entrance music is Andre Nickatina - Color of the Benz. A fine choice. The fight MMA fans around the world have waited their entire lives for!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 - 9 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Georges Moxley!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 10 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jubei Akechi!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, Phil Schofield and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Moxley throws a jab but it's blocked by Akechi.
Moxley really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Akechi gets the takedown into side control.

Moxley is looking for a sweep.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Moxley takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.

Akechi connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Moxley some visible discomfort.

Moxley is squirming around, avoiding Akechi's attempts to control the action.

Moxley is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Moxley is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.

Akechi throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Moxley was covering up waiting for the punch and Akechi finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Moxley makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Moxley.

Moxley is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Moxley is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Akechi defends well.
Akechi is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Moxley is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Moxley wants to take a breather but Akechi is having none of it.

Moxley is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Akechi tries to get to full guard but Moxley has control of the leg.

Moxley is just content to waste time from the top position. Akechi takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Jubei Akechi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Moxley misses with a straight left.
Akechi shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Moxley sprawls well. Moxley wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Akechi gets slowly back to his feet.

enabling Moxley to counter with a crisp jab.
Moxley throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Akechi fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.

Moxley throws a shot from downtown. Akechi moves away and avoids it.
Moxley looks to score with a jab to the body but Akechi is just out of range.

and Moxley counters with a straight punch to the midsection.

Akechi looks to land a left hand but Moxley moved out of range nicely.
It looked like Moxley was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Akechi.
Georges Moxley seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Moxley throws a poor cross that misses
enabling Akechi to counter with a crisp jab.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Moxley enables Akechi to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Moxley manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Moxley escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Akechi gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Akechi keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Moxley's head.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Akechi working his ground and pound in the gym. So far it seems to be working well.
Jubei Akechi has got the better of the ground game so far.

Moxley has a hand on Akechi's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Akechi takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!

Moxley wants to control but Akechi is having none of it.

Moxley keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Akechi fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

Akechi can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Moxley is looking to escape.
Moxley is bucking up trying to escape but Akechi cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Moxley is in a horrible position here. Akechi smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Moxley is in all sorts of trouble here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Akechi cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Moxley is rocked!

Oh Moxley is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!

Akechi prevents Moxley from getting the reversal.
Akechi loads up on a couple of big shots to the head that have Moxley scrambling to escape. He can't get free though and several more unanswered shots from Akechi land to the head. The referee has no choice but to stop the fight. Akechi stands and salutes the crowd.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:21 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Jubei Akechi!
