Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Rene Lafayette (ranked 1862 p4p, 3945 weight class) and Dan Averescu (ranked 256 p4p, 459 weight class). Lafayette comes to the cage accompanied by Erasure - Always. Averescu has chosen Guns N' Roses - Welcome To The Jungle as his entrance music. Dan Averescu has the eye of the tiger tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 19 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rene Lafayette!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 16 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Dan Averescu!
The judges for this bout are Aafke Stam, Albert Achterberg and Wagner Zegers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lafayette shoots in looking for a takedown but Averescu manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Lafayette's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

and Lafayette counters with a nice body shot.
Lafayette shoots for a double leg takedown but Averescu sprawls well. He's pushed Lafayette's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Lafayette tries to counter with a takedown but Averescu is quick to defend against it.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Averescu wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Lafayette has him pressed against the cage.

Lafayette blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.

Lafayette lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Averescu or not.
Averescu looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Lafayette takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Averescu is trying to break the clinch but Lafayette is controlling him.

Averescu lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
Averescu throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Lafayette is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Averescu is defending well for now.
Lafayette goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Averescu on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.

Averescu has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Averescu is trying to push Lafayette away but Lafayette has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Lafayette breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Lafayette lands a jab to the nose.
Dan Averescu is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Averescu misses with a body shot.

Lafayette darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Averescu tries to kick Lafayette off in order to stand up. Lafayette Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
The referee asks Lafayette politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Lafayette prefers to stall for the moment though.
Averescu is pushing Lafayette's head away, looking to escape. Lafayette manages to hold on to the position though.
Lafayette is staying tight to Averescu's torso, preventing him from escaping.

Averescu gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
Lafayette tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Averescu really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Lafayette. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Lafayette keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Averescu's head.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Averescu can do anything to dispel that myth.

Lafayette has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Averescu's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.
Averescu wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Lafayette.

Lafayette's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Averescu is in a horrible position here. Lafayette smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

It looks like Dan Averescu has been cut.
