PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Pawel Nastula (ranked 24505 p4p, 2558 weight class) and Lord Vehk (ranked 0 p4p, 285 weight class). Vehk has chosen Morrowind 2047 as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Lord Vehk told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 23 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Pawel Nastula!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 8 - 3, fighting out of Las Vegas, Lord Vehk!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Ben Zyskovitsi and Marco Blurström.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Nastula drives through with a takedown into Vehk's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Vehk wants to get back to his feet but Nastula is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Vehk is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Nastula trying to control but Vehk is working from the bottom.

Nastula drops back, looking for a kneebar! Vehk looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Vehk looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Vehk!

Vehk tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Nastula tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Vehk wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Vehk wants to stand but Nastula is controlling his arm.
Nastula on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Nastula tries to get out of the position.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Nastula misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Vehk with the counter takedown but Nastula avoids it easily.

and Vehk counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Vehk tries to stand but Nastula is controlling from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nastula has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Vehk has passed into side control.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Nastula gets off balance looking for a body kick

and Vehk decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Nastula's guard.
Nastula wants to hit a sweep here but Vehk passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Nastula there!
Vehk is looking to stand but Nastula has his arms wrapped tightly around him, looking to prevent the damage.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Nastula lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Vehk circles away quickly and effectively.

Nastula is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Vehk is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Vehk has escaped and now he's on top!

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Vehk biding his time, looking for the opening.
Nastula keeps the fight on the ground as Vehk tries to escape.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Vehk is trying to stand.
Vehk controlling the position well here. Nastula rolled but Vehk kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Vehk is looking to stand but he's in a difficult position to do so.
Well, with Vehk on his back, surely it's only a matter of time before Nastula is tapping out... Can he escape the position?
Vehk really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Nastula.
Vehk is hanging on to Nastula's back as he tries to escape.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Nastula fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Vehk, pushing him back against the cage.

Vehk gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Lord Vehk has got the better of the ground game so far.
Vehk wanted to stand there but Nastula had control of the position.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Vehk has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Nastula is landing a low percentage of strikes.

Nastula gets the takedown into side control.
Vehk is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Nastula asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Nastula swings around for an armbar but Vehk sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Nastula's guard.
Vehk wants to get up but he can't break Nastula's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Vehk has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Nastula will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Vehk tries to stand up but he's trapped just for the moment.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Nastula looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back!
I really don't envy Nastula right now.
Vehk has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Nastula's body.
Pawel Nastula has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
