PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between TD Brett (ranked 4680 p4p, 4722 weight class) and Paul Hess (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, TD Brett!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Paul Hess!
The judges for this bout are Andrew Berry, Phil Schofield and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Brett throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Hess stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
A head kick misses from Brett.
Brett will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Hess throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Hess tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Hess looking to score a takedown here. Brett is defending well but Hess drives through and ends up in Brett's guard.
Brett has a closed guard, preventing Hess from standing up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Brett working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Hess doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Hess manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Hess is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Brett lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Brett stands up and waves to Hess to follow him.
Brett shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

and Brett makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Hess wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Brett has him pressed against the cage.

Brett jumps guard and drags Hess to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Hess seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Brett manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Hess manages to get himself to full guard.

Hess thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Hess throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Brett escapes and throws Hess's legs to the side, diving into side control!

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Hess moves forwards but Brett connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Brett dives in and grabs Hess's left leg, looking for a takedown. Hess pushes down on Brett's head and hops out.
Hess pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Brett shoots in for a takedown but Hess shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Brett is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Hess can do to turn this around?

Brett looked to counter with a high kick but didn't commit.

Brett is trying to drag Hess to the mat but Hess just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Hess tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Brett was well out of range. Poor timing from Hess.
Hess dives in and grabs Brett's left leg, looking for a takedown. Brett pushes down on Hess's head and hops out.

Brett bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Brett is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Hess knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Brett jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Hess walks away with a smile on his face. Brett gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Paul Hess comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
