The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fighters circle momentarily. Matens darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.

Sonnen closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Matens to the mat! Matens manages to get full guard.

Matens pushes Sonnen off and scrambles back to his feet.
Matens misses with a jab, cross combination.
Matens pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Sonnen back to the cage. Matens follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

Sonnen is rocked!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Matens goes for a double leg but Sonnen avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Sonnen continues to drive forward.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sonnen is in close to Matens's body, working some short punches and elbows.
