PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between James Gregor (ranked 1539 p4p, 20652 weight class) and Keijo Maki (ranked 205 p4p, 643 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 27 - 32 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, James Gregor!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Keijo Maki!
The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Phil Schofield and Donald Grub.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maki shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Gregor but Gregor pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Maki fails with the takedown.
Gregor was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.
Maki throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gregor's waist but Gregor gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Maki off to one side.
James Gregor has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Keijo Maki.

It looks like Keijo Maki has been cut.
Maki tries to score a power double leg takedown but Gregor sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Maki somewhat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Maki shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Gregor defends it nicely.
It looked like Gregor was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

Maki uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Gregor.
Maki shoots in but Gregor avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Maki shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Gregor pinned against the cage. Gregor gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Gregor stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Gregor wants it to stay on the feet.

Maki dives in and grabs Gregor's left leg, looking for a takedown. Gregor pushes down on Maki's head and hops out.

Gregor throws a nice looking combination but Maki bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Maki tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Gregor defends well and Maki ends up having to push Gregor into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

and Gregor connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Maki shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Gregor but Gregor pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Gregor swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.

Maki fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Gregor to the ground. Maki is now in Gregor's guard.
Gregor has control of Maki's left arm, preventing Maki from doing any damage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Gregor is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Maki presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
Maki swings away with an uppercut that misses.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Maki.

Gregor breaks the clinch.
Maki misses with a takedown attempt - Gregor sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Maki changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Gregor tries to avoid it but Maki manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Gregor to the ground. Gregor escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Gregor is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.
Maki shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Gregor as he avoids it easily.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

and Gregor counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

That has opened up Keijo Maki's cut even more.
Gregor connects with a good straight punch right through the guard and follows up with a right hook and a left hook! That last one sent Maki tumbling to the canvas! Gregor pours on the pressure with more strikes and the referee has no hesitation diving in to stop the fight! Maki was done - good stoppage!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:36 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). James Gregor!
