Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jose Carvaleho (ranked 1285 p4p, 543 weight class) and Anthony Merel (ranked 173 p4p, 80 weight class). Jose Carvaleho has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jose Carvaleho!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Anthony Merel!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, Eddie Farnsworth and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carvaleho tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Merel makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Carvaleho takes the fight into the clinch.
Carvaleho doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Merel lands with a short head shot on the inside.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Carvaleho.
Carvaleho misses with a punch on the inside.
Carvaleho goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Carvaleho swings wildly with an uppercut but Merel uses good head movement to avoid it.
Carvaleho lands a nice shot to the body.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Carvaleho misses with a body punch.
Carvaleho has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Merel throws a head punch that misses.
Merel gets through Carvaleho's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
A nice right hand lands inside from Merel.

Carvaleho is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
Carvaleho can't find room to land a body shot as Merel controls the action.

Merel's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Carvaleho swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Carvaleho throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

and Merel cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

It looks like Jose Carvaleho has been cut.

and Merel makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Carvaleho bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Merel's head backwards.
Merel looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Carvaleho loads up on a big right hand but Merel slips the punch.
Jose Carvaleho seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Carvaleho misses with a kick to the body
and Merel counters with a nice uppercut.

Carvaleho bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Merel manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Merel gets full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Merel wants to sweep here but Carvaleho controlling him for the moment.
Carvaleho lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Carvaleho is looking to pass into half guard but Merel pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Merel is in guard.

Carvaleho has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Merel won't allow Carvaleho to sweep him here.

Merel has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Carvaleho can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Carvaleho wants to control from the top but Merel keeps moving.

Carvaleho drops back, looking for a kneebar! Merel looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Merel looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Merel!

Carvaleho wants to get back to full guard but Merel has mounted him!
Carvaleho tries to lock up and control but Merel gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Merel breaks from Carvaleho's wrist control and lands an elbow.

Merel closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Carvaleho did well to prevent Merel getting side control.

Carvaleho is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Merel is just riding it out for now. Carvaleho eventually gives up the hold.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Carvaleho is looking to cinch up a triangle. Merel throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Carvaleho's body to avoid the submission. Carvaleho has instead reached around Merel's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Carvaleho arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Jose Carvaleho!
