PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Ares Galvao (ranked 4945 p4p, 5235 weight class) and Nick Holey (ranked 409 p4p, 422 weight class). Nick Holey is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ares Galvao!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 22 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Nick Holey!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Percy O'Donnell and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Galvao tries to keep at a distance but Holey has taken the fight into the clinch.
Holey tries to score a body lock takedown but Galvao shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Galvao prevents the takedown attempt.
Holey is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

Holey's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Galvao feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Galvao has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Galvao will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Holey is looking to reverse the position.
Holey is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
Holey tries to strike but it doesn't land.

Galvao has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.
Holey should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Holey pushes Galvao away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Galvao gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Galvao is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

Holey is looking for a sweep. Galvao is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Holey looks to throw the jab but Galvao is out of range.

Galvao decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Holey wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.
Galvao has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Holey's body.
I really don't envy Holey right now.

I really don't envy Galvao right now.

Holey is looking for the choke from the back position but Galvao is controlling his hands well.
Galvao rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

Holey tries to pass the half guard into mount. Galvao knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Holey is keen to just control but Galvao is a slippery customer.

Holey stands up out of the half guard.
Galvao goes for a double leg but Holey avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Holey continues to drive forward.
Galvao is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Holey can do to turn this around?

Holey breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Galvao looks for a takedown but Holey sprawls well.
A nice side step and Holey releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.

Galvao shoots in but no luck this time.

Holey throws a series of punches but Galvao moves out of range.
Holey shoots in but Galvao avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Holey is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Ares Galvao overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Galvao takes a little break here. Holey wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

Nick Holey showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Holey tries to clinch there but Galvao circles away.

Galvao shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Holey napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Galvao remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Galvao seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Holey for as long as he can get away with.
I really don't envy Holey right now.
I would not like to be Holey right now.
This is a sustained period of stalling by Galvao.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Holey is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.
Holey is in a world of trouble here. He's outmatched on the ground here and he'd better get Galvao off his back sharpish unless he wants to be submitted.
Holey is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
