PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jay Simon (ranked 239 p4p, 342 weight class) and Dick Pawlik (ranked 32 p4p, 46 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Pawlik's choice of entrance music: John Butler - Ocean . The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jay Simon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 7 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Dick Pawlik!
The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Kenichi Hosakawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice body punch from Simon.
Pawlik misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Simon.
Simon connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Pawlik's hands.
Simon ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Simon misses the jab.
Pawlik throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Simon sees it coming and avoids it easily.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Pawlik has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.

Simon tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Pawlik manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Pawlik throws a hook but Simon blocks it.

Simon feints and as Pawlik raises his hands in defense, Simon changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Simon is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Pawlik is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Simon defends well.

Simon wants to control from the top but Pawlik keeps moving.
Simon is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Pawlik pulls Simon in close to prevent any damage.

Pawlik working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Simon doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Simon manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Simon drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Simon jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Pawlik is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Simon is aware though and is defending well.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Simon tries to free his leg and advance position but Pawlik is retaining full guard.

Pawlik is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Pawlik throws the left hand but Simon avoids the punch easily.
Simon bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Pawlik's head backwards.
Pawlik shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Simon defends it nicely.
Simon misses the jab.
Simon throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Pawlik on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
Pawlik tests Simon's chin there with a solid looking shot.

Pawlik ducks under a wild hook from Simon.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Simon lands a right hook to the body.
Simon tries to clinch up.
Simon missing with a left hand there. Pawlik was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Simon misses with a straight right.
Pawlik thows a left - swing and a miss!
Simon was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Pawlik lands a nice hook to Simon's body. Simon takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Simon takes a swing at Pawlik's ribcage but misses.

Simon lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Pawlik at a distance.
Pawlik on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Pawlik is really struggling to land any decent head shots against his taller opponent.
Pawlik darts in looking for a takedown but Simon gets double underhooks and turns Pawlik into the cage.
Jay Simon has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dick Pawlik.

Simon fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
We've been told by Simon's head coaches at King's Cross MMA that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Simon displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Pawlik.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Simon bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Pawlik's head.

Pawlik throws a lazy right hand but Simon sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

Pawlik throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Simon was covering up waiting for the punch and Pawlik finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Pawlik got a little sloppy there for a moment and Simon has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Pawlik has managed to get both his arms back between Simon's legs - danger averted.

Simon has his foot on Pawlik's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Pawlik works his way back into a safe position though.

Simon is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Pawlik can do to turn this around?
Pawlik stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Simon swivels though and keeps the full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Pawlik is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Simon wants to improve his position but Pawlik is controlling well.

Simon has hold of Pawlik's hands but Pawlik slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Pawlik working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Simon is looking to control Pawlik's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Simon avoid being mounted?
Pawlik is taking a breather. Simon says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Simon pushes a forearm under Pawlik's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Pawlik is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
