PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Isaiah Grant (ranked 2538 p4p, 2984 weight class) and Vladimir Kalishnikov (ranked 315 p4p, 372 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Isaiah Grant!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 1, fighting out of London, Vladimir Kalishnikov!
The judges for this bout are Topper Green, Darius Henderson and Francis DeMontford.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Grant throws out a leg kick but Kalishnikov moves out of range and Grant only half commits.
A swing and a miss from Grant.
Kalishnikov uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Grant.
Grant misses with the combination.
Kalishnikov is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.

Kalishnikov closes the distance and clinches.
Our sources have told us that Grant has been working on his elbows in the gym.
Grant missing with knees to the body.
Kalishnikov tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Grant smiles and moves away.
Kalishnikov has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Grant is landing a low percentage of strikes.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Grant is looking to work some ground and pound but Kalishnikov has wrist control.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Kalishnikov is controlling Grant's posture.
Kalishnikov lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Grant has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Kalishnikov can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Grant escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kalishnikov gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

That was a close round but I would say that Isaiah Grant will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Grant throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Grant throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Nice defenses there by Kalishnikov.

and Kalishnikov counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Grant lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Grant slaps away a takedown attempt from Kalishnikov, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Grant throws a right hand that Kalishnikov ducks under and follows up with a left that Kalishnikov also avoids with ease.

Grant looks to land a right hand but Kalishnikov moved out of range.
Isaiah Grant is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Kalishnikov tries to score a power double leg takedown but Grant sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Kalishnikov somewhat.

Grant had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Kalishnikov defends it easily.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Well, if Kalishnikov is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Grant catches Kalishnikov with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Grant throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
A little jabbing left from Kalishnikov on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Grant tries to bum rush Kalishnikov with a series of wild strikes but Kalishnikov uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Kalishnikov! But no joy.
Vladimir Kalishnikov has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Grant stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Grant wants it to stay on the feet.
