PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Rodrigo Rios (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jorge Padilha (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rios comes to the cage accompanied by Insane in the Membrane. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jorge Padilha!
The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Daniel Cesar and Thiago Cunha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Padilha is looking to clinch but Rios is avoiding it.
Thud! ouch! good body kick from Rios - that will leave a mark!
Rios throws a hook but Padilha blocks it.
Padilha dodges the punch combination from Rios.
Rios misses with a body kick.

Rios pushes Padilha up against the cage in a clinch.
Rios gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Padilha wants to stall.

Padilha jumps guard.
Padilha wants to sweep but no luck.
Rios wants to control from the top but Padilha keeps moving.

Padilha is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Padilha can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Rios controls the pace.

Rios trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Rios stays in close to Padilha's body and controls the position.
Rios has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Rios might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Rios has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Padilha is proving hard to escape from.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Rodrigo Rios just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Padilha moves out of range of the body kick from Rios.

Rios throws a front kick aimed at Padilha's knee but Padilha avoids it well.

Rios tries to land a front kick but Padilha steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

and Padilha decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Rios's guard.

Rios is trying to keep Padilha in close.

Padilha drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Rios manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Padilha has Rios in his guard.

Padilha working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Rios doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Rios manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Padilha wants to sweep here but Rios controlling him for the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Rios tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Rios moves into the clinch successfully.
Rios lands a nice elbow.
A nice right hand lands inside from Rios.
A body shot lands from Rios.
Rios lands a nice knee to the body.
Rios stalling in the clinch.
A nice left hand lands by Rios.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.

Rios escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Rios tries to clinch but Padilha moves out of range.
Padilha shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Rios pinned against the cage. Rios gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Padilha sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.

Rios closes the distance and clinches.
Padilha takes an elbow to the forehead.
Padilha is breathing heavily.
Rios scores with a shoulder strike.
Rios prevents a takedown attempt there.
Padilha tries for a takedown. No joy.
Rodrigo Rios has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jorge Padilha.
Rios landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.

Padilha tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Rios just stands there and leans against the cage.

Rios connects with a nasty looking knee right to Padilha's face.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Rios here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

Padilha jumps guard but Rios stands there with Padilha around his waist. Padilha gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Padilha shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Rios as he avoids it easily.

Rios fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Padilha manages to avoid it.
Rios throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Rios looks to land a right hand but Padilha moved out of range.
Rodrigo Rios is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Padilha tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Rios swivels and escapes.

Rios looks to score with a jab to the body but Padilha is just out of range.

Padilha wants to work for an arm triangle but Rios is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Rios wants to control but Padilha is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Rios is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Rios tries to kick Padilha off but Padilha keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Padilha is actively looking for submissions here but good counter grappling here from Rios as he works his way to full guard.
Rios wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Rios looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Rios knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Padilha on the ground.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Rios wants to stand but Padilha is controlling the position.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Rios throws a shot from downtown. Padilha moves away and avoids it.
Padilha moves out of range of the body kick from Rios.

and Padilha counters with a shoot takedown. Rios fights it but they end up in guard.

Padilha drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Rios dives on top into guard.
Rios not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Padilha has his foot on Rios's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Rios works his way back into a safe position though.

That was a close second round but I would say that Rodrigo Rios will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Rios tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Padilha drops back, looking for a kneebar! Rios looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Rios looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Rios!

Rios decides to stand back up. Rios steps back and let's Padilha get back to his feet.
Padilha fails with a takedown attempt.
Rios pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Both fighters circling a little - Rios finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.

Padilha blocks a head kick by Rios.

Rios darts in and clinches Padilha up against the cage.

Padilha jumps guard but Rios stands there with Padilha around his waist. Padilha gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Still in the clinch, Rios scores with a nice short uppercut.

Rios breaks from the clinch.
Rios lands a nice hook to Padilha's body. Padilha takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Rodrigo Rios seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Rios is looking to clinch but Padilha is avoiding it.
Padilha closes this distance looking for a takedown but Rios circles away.
Rodrigo Rios has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jorge Padilha.
Rios misses with a kick to the body.
Horrible takedown by Padilha or perhaps it was just good defense by Rios which made him look bad.

Padilha bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Padilha tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Padilha has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Rios gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Padilha shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Rios wants to get back to his feet.

Padilha seems to be working for a kimura but Rios defends the submission attempt.
Rios has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Padilha is working away from the top position though.
Padilha passes to full mount!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Padilha moves to take his opponent's back.

Padilha has got one arm under Rios's chin. This could be trouble... Rios trying to control the other hand but Padilha gets it free and sqeezes tight - just a matter of time now! Yep, Rios has tapped out! The fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:57 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Jorge Padilha!
