PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Max Power (ranked 6042 p4p, 6766 weight class) and Dylan Sydal (ranked 554 p4p, 599 weight class). The key to victory for Max Power has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Max Power!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Dylan Sydal!
The judges for this bout are Santiago Holmes, Dirk Anderson and Peter Branson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sydal slaps away a takedown attempt from Power, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Sydal darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Sydal looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Sydal lands a nice short elbow.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Power trying to control but Sydal postures up.
Sydal seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Sydal prevents Power from improving his position.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Sydal is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Power doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Sydal.
Sydal looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Sydal seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Power trying to hold on to Sydal's head to control him but Sydal postures up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Sydal wants to stand but Power has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Sydal looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
It looks like Sydal is going to stand back up.

Power looking for submissions off his back.
Sydal controlling the action here.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Power shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Sydal but Sydal pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Power tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Sydal slaps away a takedown attempt from Power, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Sydal tries to counter with a clinch but Power shakes him off and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Max Power. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Sydal drives through with a takedown into Power's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Power wants to sweep here but Sydal controlling him for the moment.

Sydal stands up over Power, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

It looks like Sydal might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Power is trying to control the position from the bottom.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Dylan Sydal dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!

Power shoots for a double leg takedown but Sydal sprawls well. He's pushed Power's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Sydal has closed the distance and engaged Power in a clinch.

Sydal ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Sydal no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Sydal can do anything to dispel that myth.

Power won't allow Sydal to get back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sydal lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.


Power throws his legs up looking for a submission but Sydal uses it to pass to side control.

Sydal tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Sydal decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Power misses with a wild body shot.
Power fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Sydal avoids it really well and circles away.
Sydal thinks about the counter body kick.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Sydal throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Power displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Sydal.
A punch combination from Sydal misses.
Max Power is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Power shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Sydal as he avoids it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Max Power. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sydal shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Power but Power pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Power tries a head kick but it misses.
Power shoots for a takedown but Sydal saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Sydal fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Sydal fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Power, pushing him back against the cage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sydal can't break the clinch.
Our sources have told us that Power has been working on his knees in the buildup to the fight.

Power escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Sydal swats away the attempt to clinch by Power.

Sydal manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Power on his heels. He'll look to pass Power's guard now, I'm sure.
Power wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Sydal manages to pass to side control.


Sydal is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Sydal is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Power is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Sydal scores with a couple of nice shots.
Sydal stalling.
Power wants to control but Sydal is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Dylan Sydal showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Sydal has taken the fight to the clinch.
Sydal has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Power can't get the takedown.
Sydal is looking to break free of the clinch but Power has double underhooks.

Power's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Well, if Sydal is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Power manages to work his way to half guard, despite Sydal's best efforts.
Power wants to get back to full guard.
Sydal is controlling the pace.
Dylan Sydal has got the better of the ground game so far.
Power is looking to improve his position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Sydal decides to return to a standing position.
Power shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Sydal as he jumps to the side.
Power throws a sloppy head kick

so Sydal counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Sydal stands up from Power's guard - Sydal perhaps looking for a knockout.

Sydal throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Power tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Sydal is in Power's guard.

Sydal is looking to stand up but Power won't let him.

Power looking for a guillotine here but Sydal defends easily.
Sydal has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Power is proving hard to escape from.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Sydal is working Power over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

And that's the end of the fight!
Dylan Sydal comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Sydal has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
