PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Dragon Li Chai (ranked 1179 p4p, 2082 weight class) and Andre Mahesa (ranked 65 p4p, 105 weight class). Mahesa has chosen You're Going Down as his entrance music. Andre Mahesa is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Dragon Li Chai!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Andre Mahesa!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Jonathan Paton and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Chai is defended easily by Mahesa.

Mahesa rushes Chai and presses him up against the cage.

Chai tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Chai has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Mahesa can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Mahesa would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Mahesa is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Chai has his foot on Mahesa's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Mahesa works his way back into a safe position though.

We've been hearing good reports from Chai's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Mahesa decides to stand back up. Mahesa steps back and let's Chai get back to his feet.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Chai uses his free foot to push down on Mahesa's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Mahesa.

Chai can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Mahesa is looking to escape.

Chai jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Mahesa is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Mahesa and Chai has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Mahesa felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Chai is looking for the choke from the back position but Mahesa is controlling his hands well.

That was a close round but I would say that Dragon Li Chai will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Chai shoots in looking for a takedown but Mahesa manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Chai's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
