PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Mike Wilson (ranked 3524 p4p, 4483 weight class) and Nick Holmes (ranked 310 p4p, 0 weight class). Wilson has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Nick Holmes will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Mike Wilson !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Nick Holmes!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Bishop, Donald Grub and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Holmes forces Wilson back against the cage and clinches.
Wilson is breathing heavily.
Holmes jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Wilson walks away with a smile on his face. Holmes gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Holmes swinging wildly here.
Wilson stuffs the takedown.
Wilson seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Holmes throws a body kick, spinning off balance

and Wilson counters by clinching up.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Holmes is striking off his back. Wilson thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Holmes shoots in looking for a takedown but Wilson manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Holmes's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Holmes wants to get back to his feet but Wilson drags him back down.

Holmes is looking for a sweep.
Holmes is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Wilson is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Holmes has escaped the position, nice work there.

Holmes is trying to control Wilson 's posture but Wilson avoids it.

A close round but Nick Holmes will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Holmes shoots for a takedown but Wilson saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Wilson has Holmes pressed against the cage, preventing Holmes from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Wilson keeps control of Holmes as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Holmes is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Holmes must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Holmes shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Wilson sprawls well. Wilson wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Holmes gets slowly back to his feet.

Nick Holmes showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Holmes changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Wilson tries to avoid it but Holmes manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Wilson to the ground. Wilson escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

As Holmes tries to get set, Wilson tries to push him back and clinch up but Holmes manages to avoid the attempt.

Holmes drops down looking for an ankle pick but Wilson pulls his leg out and moves away.

Wilson is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Holmes is defending well for now.
Holmes tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Wilson smiles and moves away.

Wilson is looking for a counter combo.
Wilson will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Holmes lands a slapping body shot.

and Wilson counters with a single leg into guard. Holmes didn't expect that.

Holmes is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Wilson presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Wilson shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Holmes's guard.

Wilson is trying to control the action in half guard but Holmes is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Holmes has hold of Wilson 's hands but Wilson slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Well, if Wilson is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Wilson has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Wilson blocks the strikes from Holmes.
Nick Holmes has got the better of the ground game so far.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Wilson prevents Holmes from improving his position.
Holmes keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Wilson wants to stand but Holmes has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Nick Holmes is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
