PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Santiago Costa (ranked 627 p4p, 522 weight class) and Trond Asmundsen (ranked 95 p4p, 75 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 23 - 20 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Santiago Costa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 22 - 16 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Trond Asmundsen!
The judges for this bout are Donald Grub, James Glass and Chris Edwards.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Costa slips under a jab from Asmundsen.
Costa tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Asmundsen was well out of range. Poor timing from Costa.
The fight stays on the outside here - Costa looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Asmundsen looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Costa throws a good cross that connects.
Asmundsen fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Costa manages to avoid it.

Costa decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Asmundsen is not content to let Costa control the position.
Costa has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Asmundsen tries to get to full guard but Costa has control of the leg.

Asmundsen moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Costa is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Costa content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Costa ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Asmundsen moves away.
Costa throws out a loose jab but Asmundsen uses good head movement to avoid it.
Costa looks to land a combination but Asmundsen avoids it well.
Asmundsen is looking to score with low kicks.
Costa lands a lovely overhand right.
Costa dives in for a single leg takedown but Asmundsen sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Asmundsen lands a nice shot to the body.
Asmundsen trying to stall but Costa improves his position.
Asmundsen works on Costa's body with a couple of short punches.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Asmundsen.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Costa's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!

Asmundsen fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Costa manages to avoid it.
Asmundsen uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Costa.
A countering left hand to the body from Asmundsen misses.
Costa goes for a double leg but Asmundsen avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Asmundsen continues to drive forward.
Asmundsen lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Costa.
Costa fails to pull the fight into his guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Santiago Costa. That's going to take a lot out of him.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Costa takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

Costa looking to hit a scissor sweep but Asmundsen is one step ahead there.
Asmundsen keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Costa's head.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Santiago Costa will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!

Asmundsen throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Costa darts in looking for a takedown but Asmundsen gets double underhooks and turns Costa into the cage.
Come on Asmundsen - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Asmundsen lands a hook that snaps the head of Costa backwards.

Costa has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Asmundsen clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Asmundsen is in a world of trouble here. He's outmatched on the ground here and he'd better get Costa off his back sharpish unless he wants to be submitted.
Costa is hanging on to Asmundsen's back as he tries to escape.
Asmundsen is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Costa is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.

Costa is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Asmundsen knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Asmundsen for a finish.

Asmundsen is looking to work some ground and pound but Costa has wrist control.
Asmundsen controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Asmundsen got a little sloppy there for a moment and Costa has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Asmundsen has managed to get both his arms back between Costa's legs - danger averted.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Costa is on top in guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Asmundsen escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Costa gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

That was a close second round but I would say that Santiago Costa will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Costa's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Costa has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Santiago Costa overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
This is a sustained period of stalling by Costa.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

I think Costa has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
