PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Carlos Rogan (ranked 2294 p4p, 1922 weight class) and Alex Martens (ranked 269 p4p, 222 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Martens's choice of entrance music: The XX - Intro. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Carlos Rogan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Alex Martens!
The judges for this bout are Wagner Zegers, Albert Achterberg and Paulsen Ambrosius.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Martens connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Rogan wants to clinch but Martens slips to the side
and Martens counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Martens swats away the attempt to clinch by Rogan.
Rogan wants to clinch
and Martens makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Rogan shoots for a takedown but Martens saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Rogan shoots and misses
and Martens counters with a nice leg kick.
Rogan fails with the takedown
and Rogan takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Carlos Rogan. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Rogan feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Martenss jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Rogan moves into range and clinches up with Martens.

Martens's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Rogan gets a double leg takedown into Martens's guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Martens can do anything to dispel that myth.

We've been hearing good reports from Rogan's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Rogan has a takedown stuffed.
Rogan tries to close the distance and clinch but Martens swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Alex Martens is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

and Martens cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Rogan misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

Rogan clinches with his opponent.

Martens lands a knee to the head.
Martens keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Rogan's efforts to push away.
Rogan wants to get back to striking at distance but Martens won't allow it.
Rogan takes a knee right on the jaw!

It looks like Carlos Rogan has been cut.
Rogan has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Martens avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Rogan is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Martens pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Rogan breaks the clinch.
Rogan is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Martens.

Rogan is rocked!
Rogan leaves his chin hanging out and Martens seizes the opportunity with an uppercut! Rogan crumbles to the floor in a heap! The referee steps in and tends to the downed fighter! What a knockout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:40 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Alex Martens!
An out of breath Alex Martens thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
