PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Joao Apolinario (ranked 1546 p4p, 1291 weight class) and Ethan Hawk (ranked 231 p4p, 185 weight class). Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Joao Apolinario!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ethan Hawk!
The judges for this bout are James Atkins, Donald Grub and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Apolinario takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.

Apolinario manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Hawk on his heels. He'll look to pass Hawk's guard now, I'm sure.
Hawk pulls Apolinario in close to prevent any damage.

Apolinario is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Apolinario is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Apolinario trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Apolinario trying to control the position from guard on top but Hawk is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Hawk looking for a guillotine here but Apolinario defends easily.

Apolinario pushing down on Hawk's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Apolinario wants to free his trapped foot but Hawk is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Apolinario is working for a submission of some sort.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Hawk is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Hawk is staying active underneath Apolinario, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Apolinario wants to work for an arm triangle but Hawk is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Apolinario is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Hawk is trying to control but can't.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Apolinario is working for a kimura but Hawk is defending it quite comfortably.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Apolinario prevents Hawk from improving his position.
Hawk is not content to let Apolinario control the position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Apolinario fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Hawk avoids it really well and circles away.
A nice side step and Hawk releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Apolinario uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Hawk.
Nice uppercut there from Hawk.

and Hawk cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Joao Apolinario. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Hawk lands a nice shot to the body.
Apolinario tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him.

Joao Apolinario seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Apolinario is breathing heavily.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Apolinario fails with the takedown
and Hawk counters with a nice uppercut.
Hawk wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Hawk lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Apolinario doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Apolinario walks into a stiff left hand from Hawk.

Hawk sends Apolinario crashing to the mat with a devastating uppercut! Hawk is motioning to the referee to let Apolinario up. He wants to try and finish this one on the feet!

Apolinario is rocked!
Apolinario shoots and misses
and Hawk rattles Apolinario with a well-timed uppercut counter. - Apolinario tries to back away and recover but his hands are down low and he gets tagged again, sending him stumbling down to the canvas. Hawk dives in after him and quickly finishes the job with a trio of brutal punches, leaving Apolinario stiff and motionless on the mat!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:52 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Ethan Hawk!
Ethan Hawk took to the mic after the fight and begged the organizational hierarchy for a shot at the title.
