HERO Amsterdam

Prelims

Welterweight Division:  Artem Bessmertin vs Cortland Cartwright

Bessmertin showed versatility in this one, landing shots on the feet, getting takedowns, and ground and pounding on the mat. Cartwright seemed a little timid in his pro debut and didn't attempt much offense That made it easy for Bessmertin to take control. Result: Bessmertin by 2nd round TKO (Strikes)

Featherweight Division: Carlos Martinez vs Ancient King

King defended the strikes that Martinez threw at him, bided his time, and went for the takedown when the opportunity presented itself. Once on the mat, he continued to pick his shots and make them count. It only took three punches to put Martinez away. Result: King by 1st round THO (Strikes)

Bantamweight Division: Dan Love vs Darcy Verot

Verot threw an amazing 30 punch combinations in this one, but without using any jabs to set them up, they were quite predictable. Love was able to defend almost all of them. Love worked hard for takedowns. Depsite amazing takedown defense from Verot, he finally got the fight down in the second round. After several minutes of hard grappling, he found the perfect spot for a subsmission attempt. Result: Love by 2nd round submission (Armbar)

Bantamweight Division: Jacek Kowalski vs Vitor Freire

Kowalski got the early takedown and spent the majority of the round battling for position with Freire. He attempted some submissions, but Freire defended them all. However, once Kowalski was able to get full mount, he unleased a pounding that Freire couldn't survive. Result: Kowalski by 1st round TKO (Strikes)

Light Heavyweight Division: Hakuma Hariyuoki vs Brian Lancer

This fight was an old fashioned boxing match. Neither guy even attempted to grapple or try for a takedown. Harikuoki got some nice shots in, but Lancer was more active and more effective, culminating with a beautiful combo that knocked Hakuma down and a follow up four punch combo and counter uppercut that ended the fight. Result: Lancer by 1st round TKO (Strikes)

Main Card

Lightweight Division: Jeremy Truong vs Phillip Schreiber

Schreiber was effective when he went to the head with his boxing, but Truong was the one who was able to cause the most damage in the striking. He cut Schreiber with an uppercut, knocked him down with a left-right combo, then used a right-left combo to put him out cold. Result: Truong by 1st round KO (Punches)

Welterweight Division: Charles Cooper vs Loki Lazerous

This one turned out to be a tactical striking match. Lazerous was interested in boxing, while Cooper wanted to clinch up and throw elbows. The first round, Cooper got his way. The second went to Lazerous. The third went much like the first did and all three judges ruled this close fight the same way.. Result: Cooper by unanimous decision

Middleweight Division: Gerry Van Berry vs Bjj Wrestler

Van Berry got an early takedown and dominated the first round with strong ground control. Wrestler came out in the second knowing he couldn't end up on his back again. Very early in the round, he knocked down Van Berry, pounced on him, and unleashed devastating hammerfists to close out the come from behind win. Result: Wrestler by 2nd round TKO (Strikes)

Co-Main Event

Bantamweight Division: Juan Dos Santos vs BJ Ferguson

The first two rounds of this battle between BJJ experts was razor thin. Ferguson was probably up on the scorecards due to having more takedowns, but it was really too close to call. Dos Santos, knowing that he would probably not get the nod from the judges, went all out in the last moments of the third. A missed leglock put him on the bottom, but he still stayed aggressive, going for an armbar. He went after it so viciously that Ferguson had to tap just four seconds away from a likely win. Result: Dos Santos by 3rd round submission (Armbar)

Main Event

HERO Bantamweight Championship: Joonas Mustonen vs Hans Olson

Both fighters threw a tremendous volume of punches, making this a true slugfest. The difference was in accuracy. Mustonen connected at a much higher rate than Olson and the accumulation of punches caught up to Olson. Mustonen rocked him with an overhand right midway through the second. and dropped him with a straight left. A few ground shots convinced the ref to put a stop to things. Result: Mustonen by 2nd round TKO (Strikes)

Post Fight Press Conference

AJ Nex congratulated Mustonen for defending his crown and Dos Santos for earning a shot at the belt.

He also handed out the night's awards:

KO of the Night: Jeremy Truong

Sub of the Night: Juan Dos Santos

Fight of the Night: Charles Cooper vs Loki Lazerous

HERO will be back in Helsinki on Sunday night when Jake James tries to get revenge on Boyko Borisov and claim the heavyweight title at HERO 35. Until then, good night and happy training.
