HERO 23: Kasavanov vs Van Der Moot

Prelims

Bantamweight Division: Takashi Yamamoto vs Vitor Freire

Freire used a dominant boxing game to dominate this one. Yamamoto should have gone for more takedowns. He was successful with the one he got, but Freire managed to get back up and continue to unload until Yamamoto was on his back. Result: Freire by 1st round TKO (Punches)

Heavyweight Division: Razor Ramone vs Gorilla Monsoon

This was a rematch between two fighters trying to get into the upper echelon of HERO heavyweights. Ramone took the first fight and Monsoon was looking for revenge. He got off to a good start, dominating the first round with his striking. However, after a takedown in the second round, he allowed Ramone to take his back, which Razor took full advantage of. Result: Ramone by 2nd round submission (Rear Naked Choke)

Heavyweight Division: Markus Heinola vs Ludo Kopper

This bout was an absolute bloodbath. Kopper was cut early with a nice shot. He countered by busting Heinola open with a straight right. As the round went on, Heinola kept working away on Kopper's cut until Ludo was bleeding all over the place. Knowing the doctor might step in at any moment, Kopper rushed in with guns blazing. With blood streaming down his face, he finished Heinola with a beautiful combination. Result: Ludo Kopper by 1st round TKO (Strikes)

Lightweight Division: Mikko Neva vs Gomi Bakanori

Neva tried desperately to make this a ground battle, but Bakanori displayed wonderful takedown defense, keeping this fight in his comfort zone, where he was able to pick Neva apart with his superior striking. Neva survived the first round, but not long after. Result: Bakanori by 2nd round TKO (Punches)

Welterweight Division: Loki Lazerous vs Arttu Attila

Lazerous took this fight to the mat, which appeared to have been a fatal mistake. Attila went to work with submissions, attempting a total of siz. However, Loki managed to survive and the ref stood the fighters back up. This time, Lazerous chose to strike and finished Atilla quickly.  Result: Lazerous by TKO (Strikes)

Main Card

Lightweight Division: Usko Luttinen vs Igor Yakovchenko

What an amazing display of striking. These two guys went back and forth for the full 15 minutes throwing punches, kicks, and every last bit of energy at one another. I don't know how both guys survived without getting cut in such a violent fight. In the end, Luttinen landed more and impressed the judges.  Result: Luttinen by unanimous decision

Bantamweight Division: Martin Huuhkaja vs Joonas Mustonen

With the crowd still going nuts from the previous fight, these two warriors put on another great show, letting it all hang out. It came down to defense, as Mustonen prevented most of Huuhkaja's shots from landing while connecting with most of his. The damage accumulated, and with a little more than two minutes left in the fight, Huuhkaja couldn't take any more. Result: Mustonen by 3rd round TKO (Strikes)

Heavyweight Division: Ken Hall vs Anthony Griffin

Ken Hall was very efficient with his takedowns in this one, connecting on 5 of 7. After getting there, he unleased brutal ground and pound that had Griffin covered in blood. Griffin showed tremendous heart, fighting on and staying alive until the doctor forced the fight to end. Result: Hall by 2nd round TKO (Cut)

Co-Main Event

Bantamweight Division: Juan Dos Santos vs Tomasz Kowalski

This fight was spent almost entirely on the ground with Dos Santos attempting submissions. He went for an unbelievable 32 submission attempts over the course of nine minutes. Kowalski showed amazing defense on the first 31, but eventually left his arm in a spot where Dos Santos could grab it and finish. Result: Dos Santos by 2nd round submission (Armbar)

Main Event

HERO Lightweight Championship: Dimitri Kasavanov vs Maarten Van Der Moot

Kasavanov moved this fight into the clinch early, which proved to be a very unwise decision. Van Der Moot beat him up with dominant dirty boxing. A rocked Kasavanov knew he needed to change things up and tried unsuccessfully to jump guard. Van Der Moot simply stepped back, waited for Kasavanov to get up, and floored him with a straight left to become the fourth consecutive challenger to take the title from the champ.  Result: Van Der Moot by 1st round TKO (Strikes)

Post Fight Press Conference

AJ Nex was smiling ear to ear during the press conference. He was so impressed by the quality of the action, with at least four fights worthy of Fight of the Night. He mentioned how he regretted that only one fight could receive such an honor on such a fantastic night of action.

With that, he handed out the night's bonuses:

KO of the Night: Ludo Kopper

Sub of the Night: Razor Ramone

Fight of the Night: Usko Luttinen vs Igor Yakovchenko

Our next action inside the cage is HERO 24: Pacquiao vs Lapu II on August 10th, where Pacquiao is hoping to avenge his only career loss. Two days later, Rauta Naama will defend the welterweight title against Jake Shields at HERO 25.
