Revolution Island Night 2 Event Preview

Editorial by Jake Scott

What a great night of fights! All but two bouts were decided without the help of the judges and every one of the 756 Island fans in attendance left convinced that Revolution Island offers the highest caliber of fighting talent on the Island. Without further ado, here's what happened at Revolution Island Night 2, brought to you in collaboration with Darkness Clothing!

185 lbs - "The" Island Champion (debut) vs. "Mosquito" Chico Cunha (1-0-0 MMA, 0-0-0 RI)

Well, sometimes self-confidence isn't the most helpful thing in the world as Island Champion clearly paid no concern to his opponent's ability to hurt him on the feet. He came forward from the first bell, looking to clinch rather than strike, but his complete failure to defend his opponent's punches made for a short night as "Mosquito" connected with his opponent's head repeatedly at a blistering pace before dropping him with a straight left less than thirty seconds into the bout and finishing it with follow-up punches a short time later. With his lightning-quick stoppage the Brazilian was awarded Knockout of the Night and moves to 2-0 in his MMA career.

Prediction: Island Champion by 2nd round TKO

Actual Result: Chico Cunha by by 1st round TKO (0:32)

265 lbs - Brock "Samson" Lesnar (1-0-0 MMA, 0-0-0 RI) vs. Incy Quincy "Spider" (debut)

The well-rounded Brit Quincy had faith in his wrestling and his chin, but faith alone aren't enough to overcome a physical specimen like Lesnar. "Spider" bravely entered the clinch of his own volition and scored several times with short uppercuts to the head, but he was at a clear disadvantage in terms of brute strength and quickly tired within the grip of the powerful American. Sensing the opportunity, Lesnar began to pile on the punishment midway through the round, landing short punishing strikes to the head and body before a crushing uppercut delivered from nearly waist level left Quincy sprawled unconscious on the canvas.

Prediction: Brock Lesnar by unanimous decision

Actual Result: Brock Lesnar by 1st round KO (3:18)

155 lbs - Sleep "Zzzzzzzzzz" Deprived (debut) vs. Enzo Dimelo (debut)

Patience was the name of the game in the third bout of the night as the Canadian boxer Dimelo waited out Sleep Deprived's early onslaught in the first round before taking over as soon as he has his opponent's timing down. After scoring Dimelo's face with his long jab several times early, Deprived got overconfindent stepping in and ate a thunderous series of punches that sent his opponent to the canvas. The Angolan proved his toughness by climbing back to his feet but he was clearly badly hurt as Dimelo immediately sent him back to the canvas with a huge right and when even that proved insufficient trapped his reeling opponent against the cage and finished with an undefended series of blows from the clinch and eventually mount before the referee came to his senses and intervened.

Prediction: Enzo Dimelo by unanimous decision

Actual Result: Enzo Dimelo by 1st round TKO (1:42)

145 lbs - "Chilly" Carney Asada (debut) vs. Quincy "The Big" Queef (debut)

It's impossible to predict how a fight will unfold, and that was definitely the case for this one, a bout between two high-level strikers that found itself contested almost entirely on the mat and for the most part without any of the fireworks most expected. The lanky Queef made his intentions clear immediately, scooping up Asada with a diving double leg and repeating the trick a second time soon after when his opponent was able to escape to his feet. This proved to be as ill-advised as it was surprising however as the Mexican Asada easily swept the taller man to his back and spent the rest of the round on top connecting with strikes and briefly threatening with an armbar and a tight arm triangle choke from side control. A series of punches and elbows just before the bell seemed to really hurt Queef and the American came out for the second round still wobbly where he was quickly wiped out by a series of power punches on the feet from the victorious "Chilly".

Prediction: Quincy Queef by 3rd round KO

Actual Result: Carney Asada by 2nd round TKO (0:11)

135 lbs - Chiumbu "Black House" Diabang (debut) vs. Mbawe "Superman" Kanyange (debut)

In contrast to the last fight sometimes an unorthodox approach does pay off, and that was definitely the case in this contest as the well-rounded Ethiopian Kanyange repeatedly took the bout to the bat against his grappling whiz kid opponent and was rewarded with a lopsided decision victory. "Superman" roared out of the gate, splitting open his opponent's forehead with a kick that sent Diabang tumbling to the canvas and attempting to finish with ground and pound. The Nigerian was able to recover his wits and ensare Kanyange in a tight guillotine but he appeared to gas out his arms attempting to finish as he was never the same once his opponent escaped. Kanyange was able to repeatedly pass his opponent's guard and even attempted multiple submissions of his own while an exhausted Diabang could offer no meaningful offense beyond takedowns, proving repeatedly unable to control his hyperactive opponent from top position.

Prediction: Chiumbu Diabang by 1st round submission

Actual Result: Mbawe Kanyange by unanimous decision

145 lbs - Tito Dimelo (debut) vs. Bosco Green (debut)

Mixed martial arts is a game contested over minutes but decided over seconds, and nowhere was that more clear than in this fight. With a sizeable experience advantage in the striking department, the smallest of the Dimelo clan was teeing off against the even-smaller Bosco Green for the first ninety seconds of their encounter, connecting with crisp punches to the head and body and thudding leg kicks that seemed to be taking a toll. With his first attempt at a takedown stuffed the diminutive American wrestler seemed to be in a bad spot.. until he launched himself at his Canadian opponent, clobbering him with a series of punches that were as ugly as they were effective, connecting one after another with Dimelo's jaw and leaving him unconscious before he hit the canvas, quickly followed by an off-balance Green who tumbled into an approximation of side control and added a few swift follow-up blows before the referee pulled him away with a stunning come-from-behind knockout.

Prediction: Bosco Green by 2nd round TKO

Actual Result: Bosco Green by 1st round KO (1:39)

170 lbs - Curtis Cambridge (debut) vs. Mickey "The OutKast" Hendricks (debut)

This one was over in the blink of an eye as our fastest finish of the night netted "The OutKast" Mickey Hendricks the Submission of the Night over the British boxer Curt Cambridge. Though generally more regarded as a striker himself, the American Hendricks took immediate advantage of his opponent's lack of grappling experience by shooting in for a long double leg takedown. From there it was all elementary as he passed to half guard and cinched up a tight arm triangle to coax the tap in under thirty seconds.

Prediction: Mickey Hendricks by 2nd round submission

Actual Result: Mickey Hendricks by 1st round submission (0:29)

265 lbs - Polo Dimelo (debut) vs. Tommy Rosario (0-1-0 MMA, 0-0-0 RI)

The second Dimelo brother to have a rough night of it in his debut, boxing specialist Polo had no opportunity to fight at his preferred distance as he was dominated in close quarters. Bullying his opponent into the clinch almost immediately, the Spaniard Rosario took over the fight from that point as he landed a steady stream of savage elbows that left his opponent's face a bloody mess. A particularly heavy blow near the ninety second mark appeared to damage the Canadian's orbital bone and he was forced to tap out before suffering permanent disfigurement.

Prediction: Tommy Rosario by 2nd round doctor's stoppage

Actual Result: Tommy Rosario by 1st round submission (1:24)

155 lbs - Dong Won Kang (0-1-0 MMA, 0-0-0 RI) vs. Francis Fitzpatrick (debut)

Those who only caught the fight might have been surprised to see that this was Fight of the Night, but the entertainment value has to include the walk-up to the fight where Dong Won Kang was attacked by the Just Bleed guy. Just Bleed was unavailable for comment. While not physically harmed, Kang was perhaps mentally rattled as the Korean teenager was unable to pull the trigger on any counters and suffered a hasty defeat after being trapped against the cage by the stronger Francis Fitzpatrick and hammered by a serious of uppercuts, body punches, and elbows that eventually caused him to ask out of the fight.

Prediction: Francis Fitzpatrick by split decision

Result: Francis Fitzpatrick by 1st round submission (1:33)

205 lbs - Dan Couture (debut) vs. Lllaaaaaaaak Kom Nu (debut)

In the final fight of the night we were treated to a case of total grappling and striking dominance at the hands of Dan Couture, one of the Island's most highly-regarded young prospects and a man who has already attracted the attention of not one but both of the premier apparel companies in the area. It was easy to see why as the American effortlessly shrugged off a surfeit of takedown attempts from his overmatched opponent while connecting with accurate and powerful punches at a range and in close quarters throughout the contest. By the end the Andorran Muay Thai specialist Kom Nu was a bloody mess and Couture essentially untouched, leaving little doubt in the mind of the judges as to who was the better man.

Prediction: Dan Couture by unanimous decision

Result: Dan Couture by unanimous decision
