GAMMA #532 Gunnar v Padilla Main card REVIEW - 1.16.2016

Yorick “The Last Man” Brown (31-15,12-7 GAMMA) [Legion of Doom] VS “Quoth the Raven” Never More (17-8, 1-1 GAMMA) [Legion of Doom] Light Heavyweight (205)

Both of these veteran fighters came into this Light Heavyweight bout with their eyes on an impressive victory and moving up in a talented division.
As two stand-up specialists, going in, we had every right to anticipate that some blood would be shed in this match.
Gale Hawthorne’s “The Last Man”, a GAMMA stalwart, showed why he remains a factor in the world’s premier fight organization with an impressive K.O. victory over the man represented by fellow L.O.D. alliance counterpart Never More, managed by Nero Wolfe.

More never really got it going in this bout, as he was cut in the early seconds and was overall simply overwhelmed by Brown. A knockdown followed by a thunderous superman punch spelled victory for “The Last Man”. It was Brown’s second victory in a row by K.O., and we have to wonder whether he will be considered for a title match in the future. More will look to rebound after this unfortunate outing.

RESULT: Brown def. More via K.O. (Superman Punch) in the 1st Round (1:37)

Ray “The Raven” Lewis (25-8,8-3 GAMMA) [Legion of Doom] VS “The Gilead Gunslinger” Will Dearborn (24-11, 3-1 GAMMA) [The Devil’s Rejects] Welterweight (170)

Another star-studded fight took place next, where “The Raven” a once and future title contender in GAMMA’s Welterweight division, took on “The Gilead Gunslinger” Will Dearborn, who came into this bout having won all three of his fights in GAMMA. In a true instant classic, Lewis, who is represented by GSP’s Illegitimate Son, and Dearborn, who is Big Boss’ man, split the first two rounds in a back and forth contest that saw these combatants standing and throwing. In the third round, Lewis was able to separate himself, if only just, with a clutch head-kick that nearly ended Dearborn’s night early. Dearborn showed true toughness in order to stay on his feet and finish the fight. After earning the split decision victory, Lewis thanked the fans, to raucous cheers from the Las Vegas audience. As bitterly disappointed as Dearborn may be, we have to think that this is probably not the final time we will see these two duke it out!

RESULT: Lewis def. Dearborn via Split Decision in the 3rd Round (5:00)

Attilla “THE” Hun (16-5, 4-2 GAMMA) [Legion of Doom] VS. “The Meatgrinder” Pertti Silsa (24-13-1, 0-1 GAMMA) [Legion of Doom] Light Heavyweight (205)

GSP’s Illegitimate Son had his second representative here in this fight, as Hun took on the GAMMA newcomer, Pertti Silsa, represented by Jake LeBeau. Hun came out confident that he could out-strike “The Meatgrinder”, a surprising tactic since Silsa had won his previous five fights all by knockout. Hun was not intimidated, however, and he not only out boxed Silsa, but took him to the ground twice in the match as well, earning himself a title fight as a result of his third consecutive victory. It was not the debut match that Silsa was dreaming of, however, he has plenty of time to recuperate, and a victory in his next match should land him near the top of the card, where he seems destined to be.

RESULT: Hun def. Silsa via Unanimous Decision in the 3rd Round (5:00)

Hektor Troy (38-20-1, 11-4-1 GAMMA) [Legion of Doom] VS. Jeffrey Sarpong (26-9-2, 0-1-1 GAMMA) Middleweight (185)

This highly anticipated rematch between Troy and Sarpong, one a representative of Gerbert Bryant, the other of Brent Sutterr, saw two Middleweights each vying for victory after an unsatisfying draw capped off their last bout, with the judges unable to decide who the better man was. Fortunately for all of us curious folks out there, GAMMA got them so that they could settle the score. Although Sarpong was successful occasionally when he tried to take Troy to the ground, working for a submission finish to the fight, the former Champion was simply too much for Sarpong to handle. Kicks landed voraciously from Troy, who, despite being taken down twice in the fight, never seemed uncomfortable. Sarpong was impressive enough to warrant consideration in the division, though; not many people can claim to have held with a former GAMMA champ as closely as Sarpong did, and I imagine we will see Sarpong again soon. Both men will enjoy their fight of the night bonuses, well earned.

RESULT: Troy def. Sarpong via Unanimous Decision in the 3rd Round (5:00)

Gunnar “Knoke Stovkost” Gustavsson (c) (31-8, 8-1 GAMMA) [Legion of Doom] VS. Nero “La Bestia” Padilla (26-12, 2-1 GAMMA) [Elite Punishment Inc.] Light Heavyweight (205) CHAMPIONSHIP

In our main event, we saw the reigning champion, Gunnar Gustavsson taking on a new challenger, Nero Padilla. Padilla came into this match with quite the pedigree, winning his previous two fights against terrifically challenging competitors, and he came in with no fear as he took on the seemingly unstoppable Gustavsson. Legendary manager Whymer von Mastadon has all the confidence in the world in his man Gunnar, and Gunnar showed him why against Louis Princip’s aspiring champion Padilla. After a closely contested first round, it looked as though, even as he was bleeding, and had suffered tremendous damage from a head kick, he had the chance to shock the world here tonight. Gustavsson, however, would not be denied his title defense, as he countered the busier Padilla with strong, painful shots and cut him once more before a counter right hand sent Padilla to the floor in what was our K.O. of the night. Gunnar continues to show why he is the crown jewel of the light heavyweight division, though Padilla has all the makings of a future champion here in GAMMA.

RESULT: Gustavsson (c) def. Padilla via T.K.O. (Strikes) in the 2nd Round (4:51)
