Mel Gordon Interview

Fighter profile of Mel Gordon by Callum McGregor

What: Once again we're talking to Mel Gordon, one of the two fighters who will compete for the inagural Highland Challengers light heavyweight championship. How are things Mel?

Gordon: Thanks for having me again. Things are good in the gym and in the ring.

What:  When we last spoke to you, you said that you felt it'd be a little while before people knew your name. Coming into the first Highland Challengers title fight, people certainly know who Mel Gordon is. How has the turnaround been for you?

Gordon: It's been different having people think they recognize but not sure where from. So as long as I don't let it go to my head I should be alright and stay focused on the fighting.

What: You want to stay focused, but it must be hard knowing that your brother is fighting for the Light Heavyweight belt in Highland Games just one day before you. How do you feel your brother's performance will impact your showing in the cage?
Gordon: Yeah it's hard not being there helping him prepare for that fight. I'm going to put it out of my mind the best I can and I'll talk to him after Crawley and I are done as it will be a distraction that could affect me emotionally.

What: Speaking of Crawley, what holes in his game do you feel you can exploit coming in to this fight?

Gordon: I was able to get his last 2 fight tapes and watch them so we don't have a lot to go on but I think once I can get it into the clinch I should be alright. We also took notice he's not at Highland Brawl or one of the other multiple discipline gyms so we're hoping he hasn't had a chance to train what we plan to use against him.

What: Highland Games has only ever had 3 champions at 205 to date. Do you feel that if you're able to cature the Highland Challengers belt that you could go about giving that title the same level of prestige?

Gordon: I'll surely go down swinging to make sure I do.

What: And lastly, what's your prediction for the outcome?

Gordon: TKO by cut. Thanks for having me on again!
