WFL 19 Preview

Event Preview: WFL 19- Haarmann vs Probert
Warrior Fight League
2014-04-05, Helsinki, Hayashi's Lounge - Helsinki
Author:Josh James

 WFL 19 is easily the most anticipated event in WFL history, as well as the most stacked card they have ever put on, and needless to say it has everyone in Helsinki buzzing! Not only does Terry Aunor return, but it features the most anticipated bout in WFL history as Fritz Haarmann and Bob Probert put their undefeated records on the line for the WFL 205 lb Title. Let’s get into it:

Preliminary Bout #1- Light Heavyweight Fight (205 lbs)

Iggor Souza (3-4) {0-1} versus Kuku Xumusu (10-11) {0-3}

Both of these men entered the WFL with a lot of hype behind them, and both fell flat. Souza came in on a three fight win streak, but was stopped by Bob Probert in his debut, and as we know there is no shame in that. Xumusu entered the WFL as the favorite to win the inaugural 205 lb title, but fell short of those expectations and now sits at 0-3 in the promotion. In this striker vs grappler matchup, I have Souza taking it by KO in the second round.

Preliminary Bout #2- Light Heavyweight Fight (205 lbs)

Heikki Hirvonen (5-5) {1-2} versus Tony Rollins (1-1) {0-1}

Rollins had a tough draw in his WFL debut against top contender Oskar Wysocki, and will look to bounce back here against “The Helsinki Hitman” Heikki Hirvonen. Hirvonen is definitely more well rounded than Rollins, who is a dominant wrestler. If Hirvonen wants to win this fight, he should keep it standing, but he isn’t uncomfortable on his back. Rollins meanwhile should look to take Heikki down and pound him out, and that is what I think will happen, as Rollins gets the TKO in round 3.

Preliminary Bout #3- Welterweight Fight (170 lbs)

Marr Sepio (4-2) {1-1} versus #5 Thomas Raith (19-24) {1-0}

One of the most experienced fighters in the WFL, Thomas Raith enters this bout as the #5 welterweight contender in the WFL coming off of his submission over Szymon Kowalski. Raith faces Marr Sepio, who is coming off a submission loss to former champ Miguel Augusto in his last bout. Although Raith is comfortable on his feat, he will undoubtedly want to take this one to the canvas, as Sepio is a dangerous striker. After a dominant first round by Sepio, I see Raith getting this one to the ground and submitting Sepio in the second.

Preliminary Bout #4- Heavyweight Fight (265 lbs)

#3 Brutus Satanae (3-2) {2-1} versus Syltas Pojk (4-3) {1-2}

In a rematch, strikers Satanae and Pojk will once again face off. Satanae is looking to bounce back from his disappointing title loss to then champ Kamala Naamahaara, while Pojk is looking to build off of his first WFL victory. In their first bout, Satanae beat up Pojk in the clinch en route to a UD victory. Pojk will have to keep this one at distance if he wants to win this rematch. However, I see Satanae winning the rematch, this time by third round TKO.

Main Card bout #1- Light Heavyweight Fight (205 lbs)

#5 Antonio Vidal (7-0) {2-0} versus Ahti Ahven (4-5) {1-1}

Jiu Jitsu prodigy Vidal will look to stay undefeated here in an exciting matchup against tough striker Ahven. Ahven had a disappointing loss in his last bout against David Thompson, but will look to bounce back here. Vidal, meanwhile, has been great, submitting both of his opponents so far in the WFL, and all of his victories are by submission, only one leaving the first round. The gameplans are clear here for both men, but I think Vidal executes his better en route to a first round sub.

Main Card bout #2- Light Heavyweight Fight (205 lbs)

#2 Oskar Wysocki (6-1) {5-1} versus Jon Jones (2-0) {0-0}

Moving day in the 205 lb division continues as former #1 contender Oskar Wysocki looks to continue his charge back to the top against dangerous striker Jon Jones. Jones is a scary striker, winning both of his fights by KO. Jones will need to keep this one on the feet if he wants to win this one. However, that may be difficult against one of the best wrestlers in the WFL in Wysocki. This is a tough one to pick, but I have Wysocki by second round submission.

Main Card bout #3- Lightweight Fight (155 lbs)

#1 Yodthanong Photirat (7-16) {2-2} versus Tommy Talentti (8-14) {0-0}

In this highly anticipated Lightweight bout, Yod Photirat will look to bounce back from his title loss when he faces tough grappler Tommy Talentti. Talentti is definitely one of the scariest guys in this division, with a strong grappling base, which has caused Photirat problems in his career. Photirat meanwhile should keep this one on the feet, but I don’t think that will happen and I have Talentti by submission in round 2.

Co Main Event- Featherweight Title Fight (145 lbs)

Champion Terry Aunor (16-5) {4-1} versus #3 Tormund Giantsbane (15-7) {2-1}

In our first of two title bouts, Terry Aunor returns to take on Tormund Giantsbane. The winner of this bout will take on Anucha Poopha, who defeated Aunor last, in a non-title bout. This is an exciting matchup between two strikers. While Giantsbane has the edge in KO power, Aunor is more technically sound in his striking. I think this one actually comes down to the ground game, where Aunor has the edge, and I see Aunor submitting Giantsbane in the fourth in an entertaining fight.

Main Event- Light Heavyweight Title Fight (205 lbs)

Champion Fritz Haarmann (9-0) {4-0} versus #1 Bob Probert (4-0) {3-0}

Here we go, it’s the fight everyone including me has been waiting for, as Fritz Haarmann takes on Bob Probert. Both guys have been absolutely untouchable inside the WFL cage, but each in different ways. Haarmann is a Jiu Jiutsu prodigy, managed by the legendary Anti Kristus, while Probert is a striking virtuoso managed by one of the top up and coming managers in my opinion in John Coffey. This fight is actually fairly simple; if it stays standing Probert will win, if it goes to the ground Haarmann will have his way. This fight really is a toss up, but I will take the champ by first round submission.

If anyone agrees or disagrees, go ahead and voice yourself on the WFL’s smack talk thread. Another fantastic lineup by the WFL, and I am beyond excited for this one!
