Inside The UPF: Tony Brown

Fighter profile of Tony Brown by Dale Saw

Hi everyone, Fred Meyer here with our very first episode of Inside The UPF.Oh man, are you in for a special treat. Because today I've got UPF Middleweight champion "Toy" Tony Brown here. And, he has agreed to have a sit down interview with me. So, let's get right down to business, shall we?

Fred: So Tony, is it alright if I call you Tony?

Tony: Sure thing Freddy, I like to get called by my first name. You know the last name thing just reminds me of my army days, when I was just Brown. Yeah, I got some jokes thrown around about my last name. So definitely, call me Tony.

Freddy: Haha. Tony it is. Why don't you tell us a little about yourself before you got into MMA. You say you were in the army? How long did you serve?

Tony: Well for some obscure reason, I joined the military. I think I had just turned 18, when I enrolled. Perhaps, I did it because I like guns and I thought the military was cool and that type of nonsense. As you can imagine, I quickly found out what the army was really like, long days walking around the woods with a backpack and easier days at the shooting range. I was a real good shot, there were only few guys who scored as well as I did at the range. I think it was about 15 months after I join that I decided to quit, since there were some jerks who tried to pick on me. Well eventually I had had enough, so I decided to kick their asses. Well, it didn't work out as planned and I got my teeth kicked in and my jaw broken. After that, I decided to quit. But, I managed to steal some supplies and the sidearm that belonged to one of those assholes, which I keep in my car while driving the dangerous streets of Hilo.

Freddy: wow, a broken jaw? I hope to never have one of those. Do you think that is what got you to start training in MMA? Was fighting always in the picture?

Tony: Getting my face smashed definitely had an impact. But, I think I got into MMA, because I was bored. I started doing Judo, but I didn't like it, so I started training in BJJ & MMA at the local gym. After a year of training, I started to competing in grappling & bjj competitions. And after that, it just naturally took off. A few local fights and it just kept rolling after that.

Freddy: I personally love Judo. The throws are just awesome. Haha. Anyways, where were we? Oh yeah, how long did you fight on the amature level before turning pro?

Tony: Yeah the throws are nice, but I didn't like the grip-fighting. The same reason why I prefer no-gi training. But, I was amateur about two maybe three years, before I decided to turn pro.

Freddy: Nice nice. Not too bad. Now you've been with the UPF since the beginning, with an appearence at UPF 1: Hawaii'an Meltdown where you meet up with Kalizhnikov for the first time capturing both submission and fight of the night. Since then, I'm told you've had several victories and now hold many different UPF records including most submissions victories, most sub of the nights, and most win in UPF among others. Would you like to tell us about your awards and records in the UPF?

Tony: The fight life has been good to me and I'm happy things have worked out so well. But, I really don't think about records or awards. I just focus on developing my skills and the fight at hand. I do like to entertain the fans, but I'm not a fighter who does crazy stuff, like flying knees. Mostly because I don't have any wicked Kung-Fu skill. The fight of the night awards are nice, since it shows that people appriciate ground fighting and not just knockout-headhunting.

Freddy: It's good to hear that you are a fighter for the fans and not just for yourself. And of course, we all love flying knees. Haha. As far as ground goes I think that mma fans have come a long way and are starting to truely grasp the art of jiu-jitsu. Now you've been champion for quite some time now. What are your plans for the future? Is UPF going to remain in the picture? Or are going to move on seeking tougher competition?

Tony: haha, I'm not that tough yet to move beyond UPF. At the moment, I'm just interested in training and getting my standup skills a bit better. After my standup skills have improved, I'll re-evaluate the situation. And of course UPF is developing all the time, so I think that tough competition could be coming at me. I don't like to duck fights, if someone who has a reasonable chance againts me comes forward and wants to fight, I'll fight. Every champion has his reign in power and I'm not scared of losing. If I lose, someone better has arrived, butI would like to go trough a war with someone, back and forth battles and main events and submissions. I must say that if a winner emerges, I would like to have an rematch right as soon as possible and start fighting the war.

Freddy: Well we're all glad you are staying with the UPF for the time being. You say you want a "war," a back and forth battle. Do you think that your opponent Scott "Scotty-B" Banks will provide that war for you? Are you ready to defend you belt again? What kind of preperation have you done for this fight?

Tony; Scotty has pretty solid boxing skills and he's as good of a wrestler as me, but he's only a white belt in BJJ. I have a feeling that he'll either knock me out cold or I'll make him tap. I don't know if he's the one I'm gonna have epic battles with, that remains to be seen. I'm ready and I'll try choke him out. I have been training a lot of takedowns and I have also improved my clinchwork, so I hope I can take him down before does any real damage on my skull. I got a message from Henkka Reem, saying that he would like to fight me if we both end up winning our matches. I reviewed his fights and he has solid submissions skills with pretty nice boxing. I don't like to jump ahead of ourselves, so I'll think about it. But like I said I don't duck fights. Lets see if he has earned it and Lets see if I'm still the champion.

Freddy: Only time will tell. Ok we are almost completely out of time. Real quickly Tony, what's your quick prediction of the UPF's welterweight championship tournament? Any idea who's gonna win?

Tony: I think Oktawian "The Caesar" August will win the whole thing, he is great in so many levels and he's only 26! That's crazy. He's a bit smaller than me, but he's worldclass wrestler and after his win perhaps we could have an grappling match. That would be great.

Freddy: August huh. Well thank you so much for coming on the show today, Tony. Ladies and gentlemen your UPF middleweight champ Tony Brown. Alright, that's this weeks show. Tune in next week, we will have Hank Patterson in the studio. And, he'll be telling us what he thinks about the upcoming tournament as well. So, don't miss out. Until next time Fred Meyer signing off.
