EMMA 18 Preview

Event Preview: Emma- 18

Author:Maximiliaan Marks

As we have another EMMA event coming up it is once again time to have a look at some of the main card fights. The event will take place this Wednesday in Montreal at the Underground.

Walter Sullivan vs Aaron Archer

With the departure of Eli Crowe, the 205 pound division is wide open as there is no champion and no real contenders. Archer (10-5) is TTFC veteran who made recently made his move over to the EMMA cage. In his debut he faced Eli Crowe in a 3 round, non title fight in order to keep the champ active but, to most people’s surprise, Archer took the decision. Archer could now cement his position as the number one 205er under contract with EMMA with a big win in this next fight. Sullivan (5-2) is a HERO veteran who will be making his EMMA debut against archer. Sullivan has more hype around him than a lot of the other 205ers so a big win for him in his debut would be huge for him. This fight is a very even one, with the only noticeable differences being Sullivan’s BJJ advantage and Archer’s wrestling advantage. Both guys can fight anywhere although Archer tends to get his wins by securing takedowns and looking for GnP and submissions while Sullivan uses his ground game defensively. It will be interesting to see if Archer takes this fight down, considering that Sullivan has the better BJJ although we could be looking at a fight where both fighters look to counter. Sullivan has the better skill set, so I do think he will be able to pull out a decision although it could be pretty close. Pick Sullivan via decision

Timmy Soupra vs Leonardo Ferreira

Our dominant heavyweight champ jumps back into the cage for a highly anticipated fight, even though it’s not for the title. Soupra (9-0) has been with EMMA since the NLFL days and took the title at EMMA 4. His BJJ is very impressive and has helped him to 6 first round submission wins. Soupra most recently defended is belt against Warrior but did not want to stay out of action for too long. He has taken on somewhat of a dark horse in Ferreira (4-4) as he is much more dangerous than his hype and record would suggest. Ferreira snapped his 3 fight losing streak with a vicisious first round KO over Sosha in his EMMA debut and has nothing to lose in this next fight. All of Ferreira’s wins have come by (T)KO and he will definitely have the advantage in the stand up department of the fight. Ferreira’s wrestling is, on paper, much better as well even though Soupra really doesn’t seem to use wrestling. The only advantage Soupra should have is his slick BJJ and he will probably be looking to pull guard. Soupra usually forces his opponents to take him down by out striking them,  that could be a problem in this fight as Ferreira is the better striker. I fear that just like Boom did a few events ago, the champ will lose and the division will be turned upside down. Pick Ferreira via TKO.

Cael Shaughnessy vs Ray Oliver

The third fight down on the main card features the return of the former lightweight champ, Ray Oliver (7-1). Oliver’s only defeat is a 2nd round KO against our current champ The Chef, before that he was able to employ his slick ground game in all his fights and it will be interesting to see if he hasn’t lost his confidence. Shaughnessy (6-0) has fought all his 6 fights under the EMMA banner even back in the NLFL days, a home grown talent if you will. Shaughnessy likes to keep fights standing and use his varied striking, he also has decent wrestling required to keep the fight standing. Oliver needs to get this fight to the mat and should be able to win if he manages to do so but Shaughnessy is tough to take down and his the skills required to out point him on the feat. Pick Shaughnessy via decision.

Ofcorse the night of fights is long and the under card is just as stacked, below is the remainder of the EMMA 18 fight card.
