HERO New Year's Extravaganza

Event Preview: HERO New Year's Extravaganza
HERO FC
2013-01-02, Helsinki, Kamppi Arena
Author:Bel Ciganin

Happy New Year people. It is me, Bel Ciganin, fighting a fearsome hangover here and dropping a few lines for the first HERO event of the year – HERO New Year’s Extravaganza, a fine way to start 2013. We have an incredible selection of fights and a headline to remember – a hall of famer and the winner of HERO Fighter of 2012 - the one, the only the undefeated Aleksi Vihtala puts his LHW crown on the line against supreme grappler Davor Langerholc. I’d like to apologise for the lack of previews for the last week or so, but that is all in the past so here we go:

Preliminary fights

Liu "The Chosen One " Kang (1-0-0) v Nai "Khanom" Tom (1-0-0)

Middleweight

Kang is a grappler, while Tom is a pure striker. Both are early in their careers so expect big things from those two.

"Shejk" Sed El Bunt (1-1-0) v "Jumpin" Jack Stirling (0-0-0)

Welterweight

Those two are an example of the “new breed” of fighters and will showcase what it means to be a complete mixed martial artist.

Dave Iverson (3-7-0) v "Korpraali" Arto Markkanen (6-6-0)

Middleweight

Iverson and Markkanen have 21 fights in HERO FC in total so they can be considered a true veterans of the org. Both guys haven’t reached the pick of their capabilities and will look to make a right step towards it with a victory tonight.

Marko Asell (1-0-0) v "God Of Death" Ah Puch Nacon (1-0-0)

Lightweight

This fight will be all about wrestling vs BJJ as talented wrestler Marko Asell faces the HERO Comback of 2012 award winner Ah Puch Nacon.

Main Card

Jaarko Hahlund (7-6-0) v Hakuma "Samurai" Hariyuoki (4-2-0)

Light heavyweight

Hariyouki is doing pretty well recently, winning his last two fights. His opponent tonight is the always dangerous Jaarko Hahlund who will look to derail the Samurai’s path to the title and get himself in the mix.

Jummi Jammi (5-3-0) v Gustav "The Machine" Tedvik (6-2-0)

Light heavyweight

Jummi Jammi might be the next big thing in the LHW division, winning his last 4 fights, but his next opponent is a real step up in competition and will really show us is Jammi ready to make some serious noise or not. Gustav Tedvik lost his last two fights and has no intention to allow anyone to make a name for themselves off his.

Jacek Kowalski (6-3-0) v Hans Olson (6-2-0)

Bantamweight

Kowalski surrounded his name with a lot of hype due to his submission victory via triple decker pecker wrecker which won him the 2012 HERO Submission of The Year award and will now take on a really big name – the former contender Hans Olson. A win for Kowalski might be just what he needs to get a title shot, but Hans Olson has shown that he is not that easy to beat, infact the only ones to do that were the champions of the division at the time.

Usko Luttinen (9-3-0) v Jango Fett (7-1-0)

Lightweight. Co-main event.

Our co-main event of the night features the former champion Usko Luttinen looking to get back on track with a win against a very skilled grappler who has yet to taste defeat in HERO – Jango Fett. I guess the outcome will be determined from the position this fight takes place – if it stays standing Usko will make Jango’s night a short one, while if it hits the ground it will be the other way around.

Aleksi "Kaarlon Toinen Veli" Vihtala (11-0-0) v "The Executioner" Davor Langerholc (5-0-0)

Light heavyweight. Title fight. Main event.

The headline is set for sheer entertainment for everyone calling himself a fight fan. Aleksi Vihtala, the light heavyweight and overall best fighter of the year will lock horns with the BJJ black belt Davor Langerholc. The first time I saw a Davor Langerholc fight, I tought this might be the guy to do the unthinkable and take the strap away from Aleksi Vihtala. Our champion doesn’t seem intimidated buy his opponent though as he beat great grapplers before, infact he submitted the great wrestler and BJJ brown belt Gustav Tedvik in the second round and Langerholc battled with him for 3 rounds just to win a razor thin decision, but still this is a very interesting stylistical clash and if anyone counts Langerholc out, he should go see the doctor because only a madman would do that.
