I know that there are a lot of Brits on here, so I'm interested in hearing your opinions on the UK potentially leaving the EU. To me, it's a no brainer what I would vote if I were a UK citizen but I'm sure I dont know all the facts or ramifications. It's a huge decision that will have a significant impact on the entire western world, so I'd like a better understanding of the feelings of those who get to make the decision.

I desperatly hope we stay in a lot of the 'reasons for leaving' are simply daft. I am lucky enough that I have dual nationality (Eire) So It will not be as big a problem for me as some of my friends...hell I may move there if we leave.

It is a retarded situation that has been brought about by retarded men, imagine Donald Trump with blond hair and you have yourself Boris Johnson and while his writings are very well put, everything else about the man screams that he is not only incompetent but in the back pockets of the backbenchers in the Conservative party, same with IDS and Michael Gove.

 

Anyway being Scottish, we have already been through the same shit with the independence campaign and they are bringing up the same shit over and over again, whatever they are told will poll well and they already know the big points, the NHS, the economy and immigration. The devil is in the details though and the point that is no longer being discussed is the one that worries me the most.

 

The European Convention of Human Rights has played a major role in shaping a lot of our countries laws and holds our own courts accountable, to the point that you can appeal to the Human rights court in Europe, something which has royally pissed off the British top court for many years. The Conservatives wanted to scrape the Human Rights Act and make a British Rights act instead, but their major problem is the fact in order to be in the European Union they must be signed to the ECHR, so they cannot scrape it, of course unless we leave the EU (this is according to our European Law Lecturer this year), so the British bill of rights would basically have to be the ECHR re-written the exact same, unless we left Europe. The major worries for me is that currently Michael Grove is the SS for justice and also a supporter of the death penalty which cannot be reinstated while we are part of the EU, he also supports the leave campaign. I wouldn't trust the Conservative Government to write out a lunch menu never mind a bill of rights.

 

The other problem I see is the fact David Cameron is heading up the "in" campaign, yet he wants us out of the EU, I mean he was the one that introduced the UK bill of rights in the first place back in 2011 but due to not having a majority, he could not push it through, it was one of his main ideas which he has carried through into 2015.

 

Now, on to my dream scenario, England slightly votes to leave, Scotland, Wales and NI will all vote to remain in the EU strongly, which means that Britain remains in the EU. The Conservatives throw a hissy fit because they haven't gotten their way. This will no doubt lead to some animosity that England wanted out and they push for their own independence from Britain, Scotland pushes that it wants to leave and no vote is held but a mutual break up of the United Kingdom happens and I am a happy man. Scotland gets voted in as a member state of the EU, England leaves the EU and everyone gets to be happy. This won't happen though, the bookies have it as 1/10 or something that we remain in the EU, the bookies are rarely wrong in with politics.

 

The NHS is fear-mongering both sides say that it will be harmed one way or another. Most of Europe has free healthcare, if not all of it. I doubt they are going to force that we abolish the NHS (they couldn't do that anyway) but still. I'd be more scared of leaving the EU, because the Conservatives have shown utter contempt for the NHS and clearly want to privatize it, which would be fucking disastrous.

 

Immigration, the numbers they give are fairly accurate but there is never any mention of the Brits leaving to go to other countries to work, Germany, France, Denmark, Sweden etc are all very nice places to work with better pay than the UK in many cases. "What if ISIS comes in and bombs us like France and Belgium?", these people are still in the medieval times and believe that Britain is surrounded by a moat which cannot be breached, they should really ask the drug runners going from Holland/France and back how difficult it is to get into the UK, they will tell you its rather easy, even with all the security now a days due to the multiple fishing vessels etc. If any terrorist organization wants to bomb the UK, I am certain they wouldn't have much trouble getting here, however our intelligence network etc really is second to none now a days, so its a struggle for any of these plots to be done without them being sniffed out.

 

The economy is affected just by having conversations about leaving the EU, and they tend to have been trending downwards, there is no doubt that if we left the EU, the trend would surely continue.

 

Anyway, I have rambled on enough but most of the past 5 months of studying for me has been on EU Law and our lecturers talking about the pros and cons.

It'll go the same as the Scottish independence vote. People will be very tempted, but in the end they'll stick to what they know. The arguments aren't overwhelming. Head v heart, people trust their heads.

 

Personally, ultimately, I think we need one world government so whatever gets us closer to that is good. Staying together has got to be the best decision if we are heading to that goal.

I said 1/10 and its 1/7 now according to bet 365, either way it is odds on the UK remains in the EU. I wasn't far off considering I haven't checked the odds in a week, it seems to be bouncing around 1/5-1/8.

It just amazes me that the responsibility in such an important matter was handed to the people. How many of the ones who voted actually understand the advantages and disadvantages of the Brexit... Almost zero percent of them had a decent clue of what it would mean to the trade agreements, the currency, social welfare, stock markets,...

 

What a shame that such an important decision can be made by those,who in general have no clue about it.

 

I hope that it is going to be a soft Brexit, for the benefit of both the EU and the UK, but I doubt it. Extreme right in the Netherlands and France are already shouting to do such a referendum as well, as they smell a great opportunity. Give the people some punchy one-liners and you'll have them on your side during the voting. If it turns out afterwards that what you claimed isn't even true, it is already too late for them to turn back the decision.

 

The 24th of June isn't the Independence Day of the UK like Farage claims. It is the International Day of Stupidity.

Would not be even close to zero percent. I do however agree in general some of the stuff I have heard over the last few weeks has been truly depressing. It hit me today at the sports center watching 5 guys in a row try to use a fountain that had a A1 out of order sign on it,,,these people were alowed to vote. My sisters father in law is an Austrain immigrant and he voted leave....it is pretty crazy.

 

Still Mrs spr has already started applying for stuff in Canada and Eire I will do the same. Thanks for the fish UK,

I think this was not one of those things you should of asked the people to vote on. For the actual people of Britain, it could seem that there are benefits from leaving as they basically get rid of cheaper labor which take away their jobs, lower social tension and make it easier to control the borders, especially considering the immigration crisis going on at the moment. However, there are masses of other things regular people do not understand. The risks involved are huge. The EU is a failed idea, that is for sure, but it is something which can possibly be fixed, with the UK out though, they have zero influence in doing so, basically it is like running away from your problems.
