Fighters you respect for their talent, but dislike them as a person?

Recommended Posts

Which fighters do you respect for their talent and fighting skills, but you dislike them for whatever reason (maybe bad personality)

I respect Henry Cejudo so much for what he achieved, but he comes off as annoying and cringy. Same with Conor, great fighter but unbearable personality, and of course Jon Jones and maybe Ronda Rousey

Fighters who play a character:

Chael Sonnen, Michael Bisping, Henry Cejudo (probably), Colby Covington (probably)

Fighters who are legit a-holes:

Connor Mcgregor, Jon Jones, Rampage Jackson

not really Conor is pridefull and cocky he likes putting on shows for his fans but i like connor dislike covington for being so cocky but getting all slapped up by a grappler and he did hands down and taunted him mad disrespectful

I think Colby is an a hole in real life. But the act he puts on is a bit over the top. Cejudo is probably a good guy who just plays a character

Dillashaw, Overoid, Lombard, Koscheck, Dustin...

Dislike most for simple fact they can beat me up barring a lucky punch and that annoys the shit out of me.

Fisticuffs, ok you prolly got it, but do you wanna sword fight bro?

Rousey is a legit asshole personality, i think i hate her the most. Seeing her get KOed to hell in spectacular fashion was some of the highlights of those years.

Hated her as a fighter just because overhyped, so enjoyed her getting head kicked by some lady I said was gonna knock her out years before it finally happened...

That said I have utmost confidence in my ability to establish dominance on Rousey if it came down to it. Win, lose, or draw she's gonna feel the warboner.

Conor, I have mixed feelings about Conor. First I love his style and he is one of the most exciting fighters of all time. I respect his ability, anyone who says he sucks because they dont like him is being ridicules, Conor is a dangerous opponent to anyone at 155. And Its not his trash talking exactly or anything like that, I think he did a fantastic job at growing the sport and was dominant at featherweight and still very dangerous at lightweight. Growing the sport is a double edge sword for hardcore fans though. On one hand its great to see the sport grow, on the other you get into mma convos with people who literally don't know shit but try to talk to you about it.

So that being said what I don't like is how many casual fans he brought in that think he is the end all be all. Literally just met 2 guys last week talking about him and Khabib and how Khabib was scared to rematch Conor, how Conor would spark him in a rematch and that Conor was just injured and hungover that night. I asked them about fighters in other divisions. They quite literally only knew about Conor, Rousey, Khabib and Brock Lesnar... Like, just fuck off with your opinion if you can't even name 5 fighters. Then comes the "Well all the other fighters just end up hugging the whole fight so I only watch Conor" ...

Then on top of that, just the pushes he gets is annoying, I understand it, it is all about $$$, but I don't have to like it. Dana pushing a Khabib rematch after Conor beats an older Cowboy at 170 who was on a skid and had just been beaten bad by Tony and Justin. Or Conor getting the lightweight title fight against Alvarez after going 1-1 with Nate Diaz at 170 (gets choked out in 2nd round, wins a majority decision in rematch). NEVER had to fight a cardio wrestler with a full camp until Khabib, he got Chad on short notice were chad gassed, and never fought Frankie at 145. Never rematched Aldo after Aldo went unbeaten for so long, if anyone deserved a rematch it was him. "we'll do it again" Conor says right after the fight, never happened. Then the UFC offers short notice fights at lightweight to Aldo as if thats the same as a full camp rematch, but at least Conor can say "he turned down the re match." So shit like that, and not to say Conor wouldn't have beaten Aldo a second time, Edgar, or beats Khabib in a re match, it just the principle, and him not having or wanting to earn anything to the extent most other fighters have to earn title fights. And I hope Khabib never gives him a re match, purley to serve him right for not re matching Aldo when he should have, which would have been after Nate choked him out at UFC 196. McGregor vs Aldo at 200 should have been the fight, not Diax McGregor 2 at UFC 202. But Conor manages to save his image (barley) with a decision against Nate, and the rest is history. Conor gets his title shot, Aldo never gets his rematch.

Lastly, I know its partly hyping up his brand and whatever, and hyping a potential rematch, but he has never been able to admit defeat against Khabib. "humble in victory or defeat" "we win or we learn" dude comes out days after the Khabib fight and does a round by round analysis of how Khabib won an MMA match but he would have won had it been in the streets or some shit. Still referring to him as "the man who hugs legs".. its like, Khabib didn't lay a pray to a decision, he dropped you, ground and pounded, stood the entire 3rd round, ate your punches, and then subbed you in the 4th. He didn't pull a Ben Askren/Jon Fitch, he beat you down and made you quit. Just a little bit of humility would re gain him so many fans I think, but his ego wont allow it. "My foot was a balloon" after the Khabib fight, or "I had to fight a guy 3 times the size of me" referring to Nate Diaz... really?? lol

And then hitting the older gentleman in the bar who turned down his whiskey, like C'mon..

So I love Conors style, I think he is one of the best mma strikers we have seen, overall I think he is still a dangerous opponent to anyone at 155, was dominant during his featherweight run, and I watch any fight he's in. As a fighter, purely his fights, Im a fan of watching him fight. Everything else, makes it very hard for me to pull for him.

P.S. I have much less respect for Rousey, was total cbomb to everyone, massive ego, super pretentious, extreamly overhyped, and the 2 most satisfying fights I ever saw were Holmes and Nunes beating the shit out of Ronda lol.

I used to like Conor's antics, like one fight, I don't remember who it was against but the other guy wouldn't touch gloves before the fight, so Conor flipped him off. I sort of lost respect for him when he started winning titles but never defending them and even more respect when he and his mob showed up, then the cellphone smashing and the old guy and the rape accusation...

I recommend Ryan Hall open letter about the Jiu Jitsu community. Also, the last case with Claudia do Val and De La Riva rape issues .

The ugly truth is probably most of the fighter community stinks. Badly. MY POV, it is improving. I've used to see shit back in my teenage days (like coaches inviting for "weekend sparring sessions" at parties, where you were estimulated to fight the random dudes just for the fuck sake of it), but the chance is most of the pro guys are shady or PITA irl

THAT being said... I love seeing Overeem getting KO'd. Must be out of horse meat.

ATT Willie Harboy owner in Cape Coral molested some student which is why Cape Coral gym shut down and Andre and Niko Price opened their own gym in North Fort Myers (FOTN bonuses help lol)

Hector Lombard was notorious for being a POS sparring partner. He enjoyed hurting people he trained with.

This is hearsay, I wasn't there, but a buddy of mine told me he broke this dudes jaw who wasn't even an amateur fighter, with some crazy spinning wheel kick and pretty much told the coach he was going to do it. "Watch this" and boom head kick, broken jaw. Other dude was just some dad with kids that liked to work out there to stay in shape. He had been training for a while, but had no business getting kicked like that during light sparring match.

Nice dude too cuz a lot of people out here would of literally killed him over some pety shit like that and it got bad to where Lombard no longer trained in Cape. Not like the people taunting/antagonizing him were gonna fight him either, people were ready to shoot that fucker in leg lol.

Think he went Blackzillions after that shit but not 100% it's been more years than I can remember. Could of been after Blackzillions.

As I said, it probably stinks badly. But improving (even tho slowly)

quoted because I agreed with you. originally was going to comment on Ryan Hall's impossible to finish transcript... but deleted comment.

Improving slowly. social media, sharing of info, makes it easier to expose flaws in systems.

I've got a second-hand story about Lombard as well from an old instructor & training partners.

At one point in time the gym I used to go to was an ATT affiliate & a group of them would occasionally travel drive down to ATT for special seminars.

Supposedly, Hector hit on our instructor's wife super aggressively & feared no consequence. Our instructor said absolutely nothing apparently lol.

As for my own personal experience I have a hot take, Holly Holm.

I used to play in a band & on one particular tour while we were in Albuquerque I stopped by Jackson-Wink. I walked in & spoke to the front desk/security guy (???) & told him I just wanted to watch them train. He told me when the "pro" class started, to come back then & he'd let me watch from the upper floor. I was pleasantly surprised when I came back because he told me I could sit on the benches on the mats. The only "stars" that showed up were Jon Jones, Holy Holm, & Diego Sanchez. After the class/session, I approached each of them for a picture. Jones just straight up ignored me, Diego happily obliged & even chatted with me for a few, but Holly straight up said "Sorry I don't do pictures" & fast walked right past me. Jones is a well known douche but Holly not so much. I couldn't even give either of them the benefit of the doubt because neither of them were really participating in the drills or sparring they were just there & randomly intermingled with the class when they felt like it. Diego on the other hand did every drill & rolled with everyone & still made time for a fan.
