Episode 20

Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the long overdue latest episode of the TWW News. With this being the first episode in over 5 months, we have a lot of topics to cover. We’ll be taking a look at the current events in MMA Tycoon, the biggest conversation pieces over the past 5 months, and taking an in depth look into some of the fighters, managers and organisations in the game throughout the article before capping it off with the return of our Power Rankings.

WHAT’S HAPPENED IN THE PAST 5 MONTHS?

Alliance Changes

Well first things first, the alliance settings in MMA Tycoon has taken a major turn in the past 6 months. The Six Musketeers have risen up by winning the division they are in every month since their founding back in November, as they claimed Division 2, 3, 4 at the first time of asking while also winning Division 1 since they reached the division in February. It looks impressive, but a lesser known change has pushed them to the limit almost every month.

Louie DePalma and Aylib 2.0 were in tense negotiations with making the move from The Cage Cartel to The Musketeers. However, a swoop was done by Elite Punishment Inc to secure the services of both men who moved to the alliance, as it incorporated Erito Batsu into their name following it. They have also since moved to add Dale Mac, formerly of numerous alliances, to their numbers. Elite Punishment have been pushing hard for the Division title every month, and while they haven't managed to do it just yet since The Musketeers joined the division, you feel that they can claim it on any given month.

Convicted Inc meanwhile have suffered a heavy blow in the past 6 months. “Clever” Hans Schmidt’s future is up in the air, as it was reported he was considering retirement but he has been in fine form lately which could see him take a retirement tour while his roster can still compete at a high level. Mihail Montana meanwhile has retired from the MMA management scene while Michael Knight’s recent inactivity is another worrying sign for the group.

The Cage Cartel have fallen off the radar with the losses of Louie and Aylib, but prior to that they lost Shortfuse and The Antidote who both retired from MMA Management, leaving a hole in the group which led to the leaving of the aforementioned duo. The Corporation have suffered losses also in the form of War Pig and James Listerman who have left the game, in addition to Bob Vendarra who is taking a break, but could still bounce back to Division 1 given a good run by their remaining members.

Return of the KO King

Over the past few years, Chris Karter has talked a big game when it came to himself and Convicted. While he languished in the mid 100’s whilst doing so, his roster has emerged as of late as world beaters, in particular his Heavyweight champion, Kajun Puno, son of the legendary Fidel Puno. The result has seen him move up the rankings and he recently claimed the #1 manager rank for a brief spell. With his roster in a prime position however, expect him to be repeatedly telling you how much he pisses excellence now he is backing his words up once more.

Syn Ownership Change

One common belief many people feel about Synchronicity as an org, is that it is primarily an org that is by the people, and for the people. In its 9 year history of being open, I count 10 org owners from pure memory. Franky Sin, Avon Barksdale, Louie DePalma, ChuckW94 (granted, Louie was still with the org while Chuck was the owner), Dark Soul, Jeff Ramirez, Bjorn, Shortfuse, Dale Mac, and now once more, Louie DePalma took over the reins of the historical org. With 10 owners in 9 years, it’s an org that has stood the test of time. While it has had its highs and its lows, it begins the journey under a new, yet familiar, hand once more.

Canadian Fighting Championships closes its doors

One of the longest running orgs in MMA Tycoon history closed its doors for the final time as CFC came to an end. One of the first run orgs in the game, it had many incarnations, with the latest being a short lived ID org run. While you don’t like to see historical orgs come to a close, I feel in this instance it is for the best rather than see an org struggle to carry on and potentially damage its legacy.

Grappling-Only org rules coming soon (apparently)

Earlier this year, Steel Penn and Bjorn announced they were going to be working together to run a TWGC style org with Mike agreeing to implement the mechanics needed to run it ala KT style. As is the case with many plans however, they failed to come to fruition for a number of reasons, with Bjorn initially planning on leaving the game at some point due to rl issues while Steel Penn doesn’t exactly enjoy taking on the bulk of work himself. Mike is implementing the mechanics anyway, so we could see a couple of these types of orgs pop up and see how they operate.

Ricky Rocker vs Helix Cabrera

The world was treated to an exciting bout earlier this year as Ricky Rocker took on Helix Cabrera in a huge superfight. The world was stunned on the night however, with Rocker forcing Cabrera to tap out just 57 seconds into the fight. With that fight happening in Rocker’s weight class of 170lbs, they agreed to a rematch in Cabrera’s 155lbs. After just about edging 2 of the first 3 rounds of the fight, Rocker managed to pull it off again as he forced Cabrera to tap out early in the 4th round. Rocker was #1 P4P following the fight, and had already signaled his intentions to retire. Cabrera has gone 1-2 since that fight, failing to recapture the vacant title following Rocker’s retirement and hasn’t had a fight since April. He is due back into the cage on July 7th where he is taking on Jose Correa.

Notable Manager’s Leave

Over the past 6 months, a number of managers have left the MMA Tycoon community for various reasons.

Agent Dee just decided to up and leave as he does on occasion. Rory Daly continues his trend of leaving and returning at various points.

As previously mentioned, James Listerman and War Pig have also left while Bob Vendarra is taking a hiatus from the game, whether he will return remains to be seen.

Shortfuse, The Antidote and Blunts Allday have gone MIA, with Antidote and Blunts’ fighters being released from their roster.

Scott Davies has been gone since the turn of the new year pretty much, with JLP taking over Ascension from him.

Ryan Epicity left the game due to his real life becoming increasingly busy.

Mihail Montana, better known as Spix, has also left the game after a spell of flirting with a return to the game.

We would like to wish all of those managers the best of luck going forward with their lives, and hope we see them back here again one day.

Syn Supernova VII

In a sign that the game is facing an uphill battle in terms of the activity and excitement of it, Syn held their annual Supernova event on the 21st April and the public interest in the event was severely lacking. With a number of events contributing to the reason for the lack of excitement for the card, it is a worrying sign for the MMA Tycoon community that one of its marquee events received little to no fan-fare.

CURRENT EVENTS IN MMA TYCOON

Engine Change….Still not happened

When Mike announced a number of planned engine changes last year, there was a very mixed reaction to it. Some supported the changes, some were sceptical of it being implemented effectively (Including myself), while some felt they were addressing the completely wrong issues with the game. Notable members such as Dinooo (Who quit over the proposed plans although some feel he was looking for any reason to quit), Duphus and Shortfuse all put forward their arguments against the changes. They felt Mike brushed over their posts without taking any of their points into consideration, which has contributed to their lack of activity in the game, and indeed with 2 of them, complete ceasing of activity.

Mike has said on numerous times that the changes will be brought in at some point. Personally, I feel he has wasted too much time on this and it’s annoyed a lot of the game population, particularly given he once warned people about accepting fights in mid last year as they could be affected by the changes, only for those changes to never happen. Some people have had their training schedules negatively affected by this, but my feeling is that Mike needs to communicate what he is currently working on and what the proposed plans to implement are along with time frames for those. Many feel he is losing interest in progressing the game, or even keeping it to a standard, so giving people more information on the game’s development will be a good step forward for him to start repairing those bridges and communication lines.

Battle for #1 manager leads to heated rivalry

In recent times, Chris Karter was the #1 manager. Shortly after, Bradley Burns was the #1 manager, with CK dropping down to #3 (With some devilishly well written man in 2nd place). They have had a war of words in recent times and it culminated in a fight which pitted Chris Karter’s prodigy Cristian Tavares against Bradley Burns’ veteran grinder Vinnie Hopkins. It was a battle between two men who desperately wanted the victory, not just for a record books, but for the bragging rights and to be the man who cemented their manager as the top guy. It was a tense encounter, with the general consensus that Tavares had just managed to get the win. That wasn’t to be the case however, with Hopkins claiming the Majority Decision win. Many were outraged in the Ice Box Arena, with calls that Burns had bribed the officials. These claims were echoed just over 12 hours later when another of Burns’ fighters, Dwan Diego, took on Fleece Johnson in Fallen Champions KT. Despite public opinion, and that of the commentator on broadcast, feeling that Fleece Johnson had won every round of the 5 round battle, two of the judges’ scored the bout 49-46 in Diego’s favour. As things stand, Burns’ remains at the top of the managerial rankings and a rematch between Hopkins and Tavares has been sanctioned. With the original bout seeing Hopkins claim one of Tavares’ titles in HFC, the rematch will be for Hopkin’s Featherweight title at Claymore Elite Combat on the 5th July.

Dynasty K-1 – The answer to KT’s woes over the years?

In the words of many an MMA Tycoon manager but with a phrase initially coined by Chris Karter in the MMA Tycoon community – KT has been treated like the red headed step child of MMA Tycoon. Many orgs have attempted to bring it to prominence. The original Dynasty, EFFA and Fallen Champions have done well, but for one reason or another ended up falling. Fallen Champions are still alive in spirit however, as recently it was announced by Karter that he is putting together a team of managers who are dedicated to helping bring KT to a level it has never experienced before. He wasted no time in using his influence to sign people to the org, with Dynasty’s first event under the new team being a battle between MMA legend Randolph Turpin, and the current #1 MMA fighter in the world Kajun Puno. They are bringing in the roster of Fallen Champions to give the needed roster to pull off the endeavour, and we wish Dynasty K-1 the best of luck going forward with their staff:

Owner: Jonah King

Benefactor: Cobb .

Mr Brophy: Grant Brophy

CEO: Chris Karter

Recruiter: Scottie Gonzo

The Sausage: Rocket Sausage

ID Orgs pushing for the top

Speaking of exciting orgs, there are a number of ID orgs in the MMA world that have been growing at a rapid rate in popularity. Underground and Hardcore Fighting Championship are two orgs that were doing very well, but they have both dropped their ID restriction and it is now a question of how they will progress now going forward.

The two orgs I am looking at in the ID restricted list both have huge potential and they would be Aspire MMA (275k) and Bushido (290k). Both have created a fantastic roster, provide weekly write ups, and are owned by incredible owners who are easy to work with. As of writing, Aspire already has plans in place to get into PPV’s and are doing that over the next month. They have managed to sign the best fighters in the ID range, and that gives them incredible depth that will serve them well as they get an increase in demand for weekly events. Bushido meanwhile don’t have PPV plans in place as of yet, but the options are there for them a few months down the line. Both orgs can become the next big names in MMA Tycoon’s competitive org environment, and we would like to wish them the best of luck in their plans.

The End Of An Evolution

A few years ago, a plan was put in place for a merger that would affect the top level of MMA Tycoon for years. Evolution was born, and many saw them as MMA Tycoon’s closest thing to the UFC. Mega events were put on, including the Dino vs Bowser roster battle and Evo Undisputed 2016.

They held numerous records, such as highest event ticket revenue (Over $2m at EVO 84), the most 1003 event ratings of any org (113 compared to Syn in #2 who have 54), the most sell outs of the 93k arenas (166 compared to Ascension in 2nd with 35). They also hold the record for most PPV sales on an event with 463,642 for EVO124: Absolute EVO. In fact, for PPV sales they hold the top 18 events when it comes to the category.

Evo has suffered in the past year however, with Dino leaving the game which meant Mega Jug has been running it solo, and also allegations made against him abusing his position to give himself highly hyped opponents and title fights. When you look at it purely for the numbers however, Evo has cemented itself in MMAT history. I’ll likely be doing a more indepth look at the org on a future TWW News, but for now we will leave it at that.

TWW news continues to be the most important publication in the Tycoon universe, providing an ongoing snapshot of current event's tracking the history of the game at the top level and I cannot recommend reading past editions enough to new managers wanting to understand how the game has unfolded in recent times. Fantastic work GBK, may it long continue.

Disappointed to see so many active people in the forums leave, but I can't say I haven't done it a few times.

I think game could be saved and activity restored. Some random ideas for improvement:

  • Balance out wrestling efficiency with striking. Small tweaks.

  • Increase effectiveness of submissions vs fighters with useless submission skills.

  • Nerf ref stand ups (or at least create a ref competence level similar to judges so we can justify 'bad stand ups')

  • Adjust primaries to either cap/reflect secondary skills so we don't have elite muay thai fighters with no knees or elbows, elite wrestlers with zero takedown ability, or black belts with no sub offense.

  • Add pure standup secondary like 'Footwork' and adjust game to where the same level of effectiveness of elite boxing/punch tech now would require elite footwork too.

  • Increase training speed by % to compensate for the addition of extra secondary

  • Remove auto-flights, disable flying.

  • Remove coach morale system or re-adjust.

  • Remove clutter from website / unfinished pages / etc.

  • Hire PA with Finances (money sink + VIP time, similar to private jet system but probably cheaper) that doesn't require fighter slot.

  • Add KT hall of fame, fighter trophies, KT QFC, etc.

Big thanks to Alika Webb. Sent me on a PM with a lot of feedback (both positive and constructively criticised which I always appreciate since a lot of people can be afraid of pointing out how things can be improved), and provided a lot of suggestions for topics to discuss in the next TWW. Odds are I will likely get it written tomorrow but then I'll add to it over the next month and post it before the end of July.

All possible improvements, but the main problem stays; lack of interest by the game developer. He has to stand behind this game and push it the correct way. If he would only be 50% as interested as some of us are, the game would largely improve already.

Anyway, very interesting TWW, refreshing.
