Aikido vs MMA

I'm sure we all agree that it would be spectacular to see Steven Seagal try to prove himself in a real situation. We know that ain't gonna happen.

BUT FINALLY!!.......... One courageous Aikido instructor decided to put himself on the line and answer the age old question.

"Does an experienced (highly ranked) Aikido practitioner have a chance against an amateur mixed martial artist?"

Have also seen it before. Same guy made a couple of other videos about his journey into BJJ & MMA. Saw one where he entered a grappling tournament and tried to use something from his aikido. It is not really "testing" if it works, this guy is smart enough to know it doesn't.. and that he can make a youtube career out of showing it :)

Oh so, he does BJJ and MMA now? Yeh cleverness overcoming stubbornness. Nice move by this guy and I'm sure he gets some flack from other Aikido instructors.

I trained it intensively for a couple of years under a very martial instructor (who included weapons training). There were a few black belts that were clearly baddass and I reckon could handle most street situations against untrained fighters. (These guys mentioned have been training for 15-20 yrs and a lot of them have done other styles which doesn't usually get taken into consideration: those guys who are tough at Aikido don't seem to mention the years of training in other arts they've done. This seemed common among seniors.) This style was originally devised to combat other eastern styles on the battlefield and so it's not that it is useless, but the question of whether it bodes well in a 1on1 against a well-rounded semi-trained fighter is clearly evident now.

Yeh, Ramirez it's true that mma enthusiasts have made this argument for some time, so I for one am glad that it was put to rest. Muchos respectos to this guy. I am glad that I did the training though, cos there are some pretty dope moves you can use if and when the rare opportunity comes up: like if someone from behind you grabs your shoulder from behind or is stupid enough to grab hold of you wrist or go for an all out karate style lunge (or baseball bat). The weapons training could come in handy. (I don't ever remember doing any drills to counter overhand rights or MT leg kicks though.)

The trouble I have mainly is that if you go into an Aikido dojo and challenge a senior, they hide behind the ethical excuses and will probably turn you down. Surely if u run a dojo, you would be up for proving how effective your style is and wouldn't pass on such opportunities?

He does. Lots of people in the comments telling him how he doesn't do the moves correctly, how he is not a proper aikidoka etc. The funniest one was telling him something like.. it works but if it doesn't you just need to punch the guy in the face before doing the technique. He then asked people complaining to do a video themselves to show when they do the aikido techniques against real attacks/resisting opponents :mf_popcorn1:
