Your statment about gloves, aikido and bones is saying so.

the false confidence of so many of the fighters.

That hardly means ALL fighters. There were some very good fighters back them. Many were much tougher than anyone fighting MMA today. But there wasnt as many good fighters back them. Through the process of finding the best fighters. A lot of bums get in and exposed. Even today in the UFC they bring in no name fighters from small shows and most get killed and sent packing. But you have to give them and chance to find the best. When the UFC started they invited fighters based on reputation and credibility. Some were frauds and some were not. But when you are pulling fighters from an era where almost noone was fighting or even knew what a real fight was like. You are going to get your share of people who thought they knew what fighting was. Which is what happened.

I wouldn't go as far as to say they were tougher than anyone fighting today. Steel sharpens steel. You can't be truly great without other greats pushing you to constantly improve. With the level of competition being much higher today, it drives the greats higher as well.

As a whole thye were much tougher. Im not saying some guys today aren't as tough. There are a few. But very few come from the rough times the fighters in the early UFC come from. You cant really step into a controlled environment with rules and a safety net in what is understood as a sport and think it requires or makes you as tough as the ones who were doing as a way of life even before there was a sport with no safety net and real dangers. IMO, there is less than a couple handfuls of fighters who would have the balls to step in those guys shoes. The top fighters back in the day were made by real street fights. They give and took beatings to be good. Not rise to the top on athletic ability in a gym. Many of todays fighters are dependent on weight classes, the rules, the peace of mind knowing the ref and doctor will not allow them to take a beating.

To wrap that up. If Doc Brown come back from the future and told the fighter a month before the fight that he takes a beating. Tank, Oleg, Ruas, Goodrich, Frye, Johnston, etc still show up. Jon Jones and GSP find a way out of the fight.
