Great write up but what's your problem with Tom Baker?

So, Eunan Moray goes in with 2 days injury, but it seems you're already making excuses for your former Top Pick.

Could be that Baker is going to bludgeon every opponent unconscious, injured or not. You don't get to see what goes on in training.

My fighter is a good and sensible lad, but he is fired up now. He told me 'I'm gonna leave Moray behind as a pounded corpse. That fancy reporter can interview him after the fight."

Results and group standings have been updated in the first page.

In Group A, Able Archer is looking like a sure thing to qualify for the championship play-offs with Polly Paulson his most likely competition for a first place finish.

Group B is much closer with Gruff Dragon topping the group with 4 points and Joe Slasher coming back from his opening round loss with a max points win and is currently on 3. Crisostomo Ibarra sits in 3rd place but has only fought once however which was a draw with Dragon so he can most definitely not be counted out. In fact all of Group B could still very easily end up in a qualifying position in the end.

Group C we have Duke Nukem and Takayama Yataro beginning to run away with it somewhat. Both fighters are now 2-0 and on maximum points at the end of week 2. The are divided by the very closest of margins. 2 seconds in fact, put Nukem just ahead of Yataro. Anders Silva and Rascals Alfalfa are both joint on MINUS 1 Points and again separated only by time. One Fortythree rounds out the group with two finish losses and really could only be looking to qualify for the 5th Place Play-Off at this point with a 3rd Place finish.

Lastly, in Group D, Balor Fino currently sits at the top of the table with a maximum six points at this time with Tom Baker in second but with a fight in hand. Brian Marais drops down in the 3rd spot after a tough loss to Fino and Eunan Moray is rock bottom after suffering 2 finish losses in a row. Makhlamed Armagenenenov is in fourth with -1 points after 1 fight

Not that it matters that much at this moment, but I think the time spent metric is off by about 10 minutes. Yataro's last fight entered the second round while Nukem has finished both of his opponents in the first.

Damn, thank you mate. That's a big mistake. You're absolutely correct. It's been amended on the first page now

Duke Nukem shows up to the press conference in a black suit, followed by the other members of Hell House, who are in town to show their support.

Reporter: You've had a great start to the tournament, and your career, coming out of the gate with two first round knockout finishes. Are you surprised by your early success?

Nukem: I'm not surprised, I'm lucky. Everyone's a punch away from a loss, I've just been on the other end of it so far. I've got a great team and a great coach, and I am working hard and doing everything I can to keep winning.

Reporter: You weren't predicted to do well in the tournament, with critics early counting you out and making you an underdog in your first two outings. How did that affect you mentally, and do you expect it to continue?

Nukem: I'm not worried about the press; they are making a guess like everyone else. I imagine they will jump on the bandwagon if I keep knocking people out, but that won't change anything for me.

Reporter: Your next fight is against Takayama Yosito. Any plans or predictions you can let us in on?

Nukem: I'll be watching his next fight very closely. I'm not looking at what he does, I'm looking at what he doesn't do. That's where he's weak, and that's where I'll hit him. I think I'm a better all around fighter, and I'll expose the holes in his game. That's all I can say for now.

Reporter: Thanks for coming out tonight and taking a minute to talk with us! Good luck in the rest of the tournament.

Nukem: Thanks. A little luck can go a long way.

Iron Man Vale Tudo – 135lbs Grand Prix S02E03

The Underground, Los Angeles – October 7th 2018

Group Stage Round 3

Group A

Pete Peterson (1-1-0 in Season) vs. Polly Paulson (1-0-0 in Season)

Our opening bout of the evening is the battle of four “P’s” with second place Polly Paulson taking on third place Pete Peterson and a decisive win here in round three would put either of these fighters in at least the second qualifying spot for the championship play-offs.

Polly Paulson is fresh off of his bye week after getting off to a winning start during his opening round bout against Nance Gibbord. Though that fight didn’t offer us much in the way of insight for what Paulson can do, we did see that he prefers to swing with a little more power rather than precision and that when he does land he is capable of doing some real damage. Now making his second appearance this season, Paulson should be completely fresh and ready for battle.

His opponent is 1-1 Pete Peterson who has managed to turn around his opening round loss to Able Archer and pick up two points last time out with a decision win over Nance Gibbord. It was a fairly one sided affair in the face of a really bizarre game plan from Gibbord and Peterson was able to move back into the third place spot and a chance at moving on in the tournament and fight for at least fifth place. With only two fights left for Peterson, all points from here are going to be vitally important.

In terms of match up, Peterson actually looks as though he might be the slight favourite with some small but significant improvements in his stand up and his main weapon and big advantage, his wrestling. Saying that, both fighters share a win over Nance Gibbord and it must be said that while Peterson went the full twenty minutes with him, Paulson had no such trouble and managed to put the Australian away inside two minutes. Something to think about no doubt but no matter what happens here, this fight looks as though it could be a guaranteed stand up war

Prediction: Paulson by Decision. Paulson has those heavy hands but I think Peterson is getting into his groove and will at least avoid being finished here.

Nilton Guimaraes (0-1-0 in Season) vs. Nance “The Warlock” Gibbord (0-2-0 in Season)

Next up, we have the bottom two fighters in Group A and both are looking to pick up their first win of the season.

Nilton Guimaraes was unable to capitalise on his first round bye week when he made his season debut two weeks after and was soundly beaten by Able Archer inside of two minutes. This was in no small part down to his lack of striking ability and here he will be facing a far superior striker in Nance Gibbord but up to this point, Gibbord has seemingly forgone any striking in attempts to grapple instead. This would no doubt be music to the Brazillians ears but otherwise, unless Guimaraes has been working on his takedowns since, he could be in for a repeat of his last fight.

Nance Gibbord has now gone 0-2 in this tournament and realistically would need something close to a miracle to push on into a qualifying position in the group. Though it could be done, his performances in those two fights have left little room for confidence in said miracle. He did managed to improve upon his opening round TKO loss however with a decision loss, but still it was fairly one sided and really, Gibbord would do well to even pick up a win.

On paper, this should be all Gibbord. His striking is light years ahead of Guimaraes’ and his wrestling is better too. Somehow though, I feel Guimaraes is the favourite in this.

Prediction: Guimaraes by Submission. If Gibbord insists on grappling still he will be playing directly into the BJJ Brown Belts hands. His only chance is by utilising his superior striking skills

Group B

Gichin “Shoto” Funakoshi (1-1-0 in Season) vs. Crisostomo “Simoun” Ibarra (0-0-1 in Season)

Another important match up here, this time in Group B. Fourth place Gichin Funakoshi takes on third place Crisostomo Ibarra. Both fighters are on a single point apiece with Ibarra ahead by virtue off having less fights. With current second place Joe Slasher on his bye week, a maximum point win here would put the victor ahead of him and into the championship qualification spot.

Funakoshi got his season off to a great start with a decision win over boxer Joe Slasher. Unfortunately he ran into predicted Group winner Gruff Dragon in his second fight and, though giving a very good account of himself, succumb to a submission finish late in the first ten minute round. This loss put him into the fourth spot but in truth, Group B looks to be an incredibly competitive one and his current position perhaps doesn’t reflect Funakoshi’s level of performance so far. In the end though, the results do not lie and, now halfway through the season, Funakoshi will need to finish strong if he wants to compete for the overall grand prize.

His opponent is Crisostomo “Simoun” Ibarra who was predicted a second place finish at the start of the season. Matched against another predicted qualifier in his opening bout, Ibarra fought to a stalemate against Gruff Dragon and then a valuable bye week in which to improve upon that in which he feels needed work. Ibarra now makes his return and he looks as though he has possibly spent a little time sharpening up his stand up skills. Whether this was the best use of his time as a Jiu-Jitsu fighter who lacks wrestling, only time will tell.

This is a tough fight to predict as Funakoshi is very much a clinch fighter and Ibarra is a submission specialist who lacks wrestling. Moving into the clinch could be exactly what Ibarra wants and from there he could look to pull guard and drag Funakoshi to the ground. It wouldn’t be without it’s dangers but possibly less so than missing takedown attempts on the feet that could leave him vulnerable to counter and fatigue. Either way, both fighters will need to be wary of each other as one wrong move could end the fight quickly and with the group so evenly spread out currently, nether fighter will want to miss out on any points that are up for grabs.

Prediction: Funakoshi by KO. Incredibly tough fight to predict as Ibarra has an experienced management team but Funakoshi looks as though he knows what he is doing and pure BJJ fighters have very rarely done well against strikers in these encounters

Chris “Lights On” Chaitle (0-1-0 in Season) vs. Gruff Dragon (1-0-1 in Season)

Our second Group B match up pits bottom of the pile Chris Chaitle against group leader Gruff Dragon and a win here for Chaitle could seriously blow this group wide open.

Chris Chaitle put on a decent performance in his opening round bout despite ending up on the wrong side of a KO loss against boxer Joe Slasher. Though his wrestling is technically useless, he managed to secure a couple of take downs during the fight after being rocked early on but was unable to capitalise on this and his opponent was able to force a stand up. It’s possible that we may see Chaitle put on more of a striking display in this one however as his boxing has been improving steadily and Chaitle is rumoured to have some serious power in those hands of his.

He’ll be facing a fighter who has so far managed to prove the odds makers correct by occupying the top spot in Group B. Gruff Dragon, the smallest competitor in the tournament currently, comes from a management team with a history of solid performances in these type of tournaments and will be looking to really cement his qualification to the championship play-offs with a win here. So far, Dragon has done OK and managed a draw and a finish win during the first half of his season but has looked far from unbeatable overall.

This could be a good opportunity for Chaitle to really press the action and go for the maximum point win as he holds an advantage in the stand up and the submission skills to make Dragon wary of carelessly sitting in his guard after a take down. That’s not to say that Chaitle will want to be on his back against a fighter with such superior wrestling but it does mean that he at should at least still be able to hunt for a finish as opposed to simply holding on for a referee stand up.

Prediction: Dragon by Dec. A match up that really does lend a hand towards Chaitle but I think the wrestling of Dragon will be the overwhelming factor in this fight

Group C

“I Weigh” One Fortythree (0-2-0 in Season) vs. Anders Silver (0-1-0 in Season)

Moving into Group C we have One Fortythree, who after two fights is still looking for his first point of the season and he’ll be taking on Anders Silver who also will be looking to secure his first win this season.

So far it has been a terribly disappointing season for Jamaican born One Fortythree. Predicted early to be the Group C front runner, Fortythree has instead managed to drop both of his first two fights by TKO finishes. This poor run of form has put him squarely at the bottom of Group C and he will now most likely need to finish the second half of the season with maximum point victories to merely have a shot at moving into the fifth place play-off at the end of the group stage.

His opponent is Anders Silver, a Muay Thai specialist from Singapore. So far, after only one fight this season, Silver has yet to mount any kind of offensive move at all and will no doubt be itching to redeem his opening round performance against Takayama Yataro. With three fights ahead of him, Silver still has much of this season ahead of himself.

Usually this type of grappler versus striker match up would heavily favour the wrestler but in this instance the wrestler has been in particularly bad form and the striker has obviously been preparing for this encounter and gained his blue belt in BJJ during his training time. One thing going for Fortythree however is the fact that he really has been mixing things up in the cage and likes to keep his opponent guessing. There is every likelihood that Fortythree will look to keep this fight standing and into the clinch and that may very well be a good game plan but, as we have seen literally nothing of Silver so far, it could just as well be the wrong one.

Prediction: Fortythree by KO in the clinch. Having seen nothing from Silver so far, it’s very difficult to give much of a prediction

“The Little” Rascals Alfalfa (0-1-0 in Season) vs. Takayama Yataro (2-0 in Season)

Our other Group C match up features undefeated wrestler Takayama Yataro taking on Rascals Alfalfa who will be making his second appearance this season.

“The Little” Rascals Alfalfa was unable to put his first round bye week to good use and made his season debut only to suffer a first round KO in under two minutes to Duke Nukem. His performance would have been no doubt disappointing to his manager as Alfalfa was unable to mount any real meaningful offence other than a mistimed head kick early on. Now, Alfalfa will get a second crack at the whip but he faces arguably his toughest fight within the group in wrestler Yataro.

Takayama Yataro has gotten off to perfect start this season with two finish victories out of two fights though technically he is currently 3-0 if you factor in his MMA debut, a decision win in the QFC. He had a tougher match up against One Fortythree during his last but was still able to comfortably control the fight and end the fight with a TKO during the second round. He currently finds himself in second place but separated only by time spent in the cage and would actually go top with even a single point earned in this match up.

This is a true grappler versus striker match up and unfortunately for Alfalfa, the grappler Yataro is currently in fine form. Alfalfa really only has a punchers chance here and unless he is somehow able to put Yataro away early, he is likely to find himself flat on his back fighting for his life.

Prediction: Yataro by KO. Without any real grappling skills to speak of, Alfalfa will be completely overwhelmed once the fight hits the floor.

Group D

Balor “The Beast” Fino (2-0 in Season) vs. Makhlamed Armagedonenov (0-1-0 in Season)

At this time of writing, Makhlamed Armagedonenov has not returned his fight agreement meaning that unless he does so before the event deadline, Balor “The Beast” Fino will be picking up another maximum point victory and practically guaranteeing his participation in the championship play-offs.

Tom Baker (1-0 in Season) vs. “Brilliant” Brian Marais (1-1-0 in Season)

With Balor Fino almost sure to take one of the two championship qualifying spots in the group, both Tom Baker and Brian Marais are two other fighters that are likely to be scrapping for the other.

Tom Baker, so far only one fight into his season where he picked up maximum points with a KO over former predicted favourite Eunan Moray, is obviously in the stronger position as his opponent Brian Marias, unfancied to move on initially before a tremendous submission victory over Armagedonenov, is currently 1-1 overall.

Marias goes into this fight a point behind Baker due to suffering a finish loss to Fino in his last fight and really does need a maximum points win here as, having actually had to fight Armagedonenov for his victory, if Armagedonenov doesn’t come back to the fray, Tom Baker is one of those still due to fight him and instead will be guaranteed a maximum point forfeit victory.

Fight wise, this would usually be considered a tough fight for the wrestler Baker going against the submission skills of brown belt Marias, but Baker has just shown what he can do against jiu-jitsu fighters and the result was brutal. Marias would have to be a whole lot more proactive in getting the fight to the ground if he is to avoid the same fate.

Prediction: Baker by KO. Expect the wrestler to follow the same game plan as he did against Moray and with no real wrestling to speak of himself, Marais might find it impossible to get the fight to the floor.

Results and group standings have been updated in the first page

Group A

Group A is still pretty much open though Able Archer is still looking like a solid bet to clinch one of the top two spots. Polly Paulson maintains his second place spot after a draw with Pete Peterson and in the third spot, BJJ fighter Nilton Guimaraes moves up from fourth after a maximum point win over Nance Gibbord who is firmly placed at the bottom of the pack with three straight losses and can no longer move on into even the 5th Place Play-Off. Pete Peterson is currently in forth after three fights and may end up relying on other results going his way even if he is to pick up maximum points in his final group match up to come.

Group B

Group B is looking more or less the same with the top spots still not entirely clear at this point. Gruff Dragon is currently in first with six points after three fights and Gichin Funakoshi manages to leapfrog Joe Slasher for second place after his first round KO over Crisostomo Ibarra. Funakoshi is also three fights in with one one remaining and will likely be paying close attention to third place Joe Slasher’s upcoming bouts. Slasher is half way through his season and is currently 1-1 with three points. Currently in non-qualifying positions are Crisostomo Ibarra who drops from third into fourth after losing a point for a finish loss and 0-2 Chris Chaitle at the bottom. Both could very easily make a push for a qualifying position however with a couple of good results in their remaining bouts.

Group C

Group C is looking almost set with undefeated Takayama Yataro sitting firmly at the top of the group with nine points after three maximum point victories. Dropping down to second from the top after his bye week is Duke Nukem who is also undefeated currently after two fights and six points. Climbing up from the bottom is One Fortythree who now moves into third position and the 5th Place Play-Off spot after a finish win over Anders Silver. Fortythree, predicted early to move on into the championship play-offs will likely have to settle for battling for third place as it is impossible to catch up with either of the top two. Both Anders Silver and Rascals Alfalfa are currently tied for 4th with -2 points each and seperated only by time lasted in the cage in which Silver is currently ahead. Both fighters have a fight in hand over Fortythree and could theoretically push for the third qualifying spot with a second half of season push.

Group D

Group D is currently looking much like Group C with Balor Fino racing ahead after three maximum points victories. His last, a forfeit win over Makhlamed Armagedenenov, means he will be fully rested for his final group bout. In second is Tom Baker who is currently 2-0 and on maximum points. In third place is Brain Marais who has fought admirably in a group crammed full of experienced management teams and is currently on 1 point after 1 win and 2 losses. Forth is Eunan Moray who was predicted early to be one of top fighters in the group but has so far had a terribly disappointing season and can now at best only push to make the third qualifying spot and the 5th Place Play-Off. In last place is Makhlamed Armagedenenov who has not been seen for some time and is unlikely to return much to the glee of those still left to fight him.

Iron Man Vale Tudo – 135lbs Grand Prix S02E04

The Underground, Los Angeles – October 21st 2018

Group Stage Round 4

Group A

Nance "The Warlock" Gibbord (0-3 in Season, 140lbs) v Abel "83" Archer (2-0 in Season, 140lbs

For Italian fighter Nance Gibbord this final fight of his season comes will likely be fought only for pride. Currently in bottom place, Gibbord would need not only a maximum point win in record time but also several other results elsewhere in the group to fall in his favour. It would be something of a miracle to pull this off especially considering that his final fight is against current undefeated group leader Able Archer and that Gibbord has been in pretty bad form throughout the tournament.

For Able Archer, this fight is likely being treated as one of his easier fights before his final showdown with group rival Polly Paulson. So far, Archer has looked impressive in the clinch and has displayed some serious power in those fists of his. More so, he has done it in pretty quick fashion with his longest fight of the two so far clocking in at only a few minutes.

Stylistically, this fight is hard to predict due to Gibbord’s bizarre insistence of neglecting his high level boxing skills in favour of taking the fight to the floor. Archer will be unlikely to deviate from his previous game plans and look to take the fight into the clinch. If he can keep the fight there it should be business as usual but there is always the chance that Gibbord will change things up and look to strike which would definitely change the dynamic of the fight

Prediction: Abel Archer by KO. Gibbord has been bizarre so far and at this point, even with a change in tactics, I can’t see him troubling Archer

Polly Paulson (1-0-1 in Season, 141lbs) v Nilton Guimaraes (1-1 in Season, 135lbs)

In our next fight, BJJ Brown Belt Nilton Guimaraes will look to put the pressure on second place Polly Paulson as a finish win for the 3rd place Guimaraes would leapfrog him into a championship qualifying position.

So far for Polly Paulson, things have gone well but not perfectly. With a TKO win over Nance Gibbord and a tough draw with Pete Peterson in his last bout, Paulson has found himself comfortably in second place mainly by virtue of poor performances elsewhere. With a win here tonight, Paulson would pretty much cement himself a spot in the championship play-offs barring the most miraculous of results in the final week of group fights.

For Nilton Guimaraes, any aspirations for qualifying for the championship play-offs come down to this fight here. While it would be theoretically possible to still do so off the back of a decision loss, it would put so much in the hands of fate and why leave it to that when you have fate in your own hands right now?

There should be no real surprises in how this match up will play out. Paulson will look to keep the fight standing and finish Guimaraes on the feet and Guimaraes will look to drag this fight to the floor any way he can. Paulson has shown that he is capable in the clinch but his real display of power has been from the outside when he TKO’d Gibbord in under two minutes. We may see him try to avoid the clinch on this occasion because of the danger Guimaraes could present if he was able to pull guard but details such as that will only be evident on the night.

Prediction: Paulson by TKO. Guimaraes has been working on his wrestling but I don’t think it is enough to topple Paulson at this point.

Group B

Gruff Dragon (2-0-1 in Season, 130lbs) v Joe Slasher (1-2 in Season, 140lbs)

A big match up in Group B pits undefeated, first placed grappler Gruff Dragon against third placed striker Joe Slasher.

Gruff Dragon goes into his final bout of the group stage knowing that a win would all but guarantee him a place in the championship playoffs whilst also understanding that a bad result could put all his hard work so far in real jeopardy. From a draw in his opening bout, Dragon has gone on to win his last two in a row so he should be in fine spirits going into this one despite the pressure that such a big match up can bring.

His opponent Joe Slasher is a fight behind Dragon and could put some serious pressure on the group if he could somehow manage to pick up a maximum point win here. Currently 1-1 so far this season, Slasher overcome his opening round decision loss to Gichin Funakoshi with an impressive first round KO over Chris Chaitle. His rumoured heavy hands were on full display in that one and now there can be no doubt that he has the power to test the chin of anyone standing in front of him.

Slasher looks as if he has been smart with his training time and has at some point earned his blue belt in BJJ no doubt in order plug the gaping hole in his arsenal. With perhaps the confidence to not worry so much about being taken down, Slasher will now be free to truly let those hands fly in the stand up. Dragon will be aware of the dangers and, without much else in the way of options, will likely still attempt to get the fight to the ground as soon as possible. There is also some evidence of the confidence his has in his own ground game when he draw with BJJ brown belt Ibarra and went tit for tat with purple belt Chris Chaitle in his last bout and came out on top after a gruelling twenty minute decision win One thing is for sure and that is that he will not want anything to do with Slasher on the feet and every moment spent in striking distance of the superior striker is danger time for the tournaments smallest fighter.

Prediction: Dragon by Sub. Despite Slasher’s improvements where he needs it, Dragon’s wrestling is likely to be too much and this fight hits the floor quickly.

Crisostomo "Simoun" Ibarra (0-1-1 in Season, 145lbs) v Chris "Lights On" Chaitle (0-2 in Season, 140lbs)

At the half way point of the group stage almost every fight becomes important and this next one between BJJ Brown Belt Crisostomo Ibarra and BJJ Purple Belt Chris Chaitle is no exception.

Two fights into his season and with one draw and a KO loss, Crisostomo Ibarra finds himself sitting in a disappointing fourth spot and outside of a qualifying position in Group B. Four points behind second place Gichin Funakoshi, Ibarra needs to make his last two fights count and though theoretically possible to make it to the championship play-offs, a third place finish and the 5th Place play-off might be a more realistic goal at this point.

His opponent Chris Chaitle will be entering the fight still looking to pick up his first point of the season. After a disappointing opening round bout against Joe Slasher in which he lost by KO, Chaitle had an improved performance against group leader Gruff Dragon though still came away empty handed after a decision loss. From here, any chance at the championship gold would require a perfect second half of the season with both remaining fights being maximum point wins and a little luck elsewhere in the group. In short, it would take a miracle but perhaps Chailte believes in such things?

On paper Ibarra looks to hold the edge in every department other then Boxing in which both fighters have a mediocre understanding of the sweet science. It will be very interesting to see where Chaitle would prefer to be in this match up and whether he fancies his chances on the ground with Ibarra or whether he feels like his best option would be to remain on his feet and look for a KO? Ibarra looks as though he would be comfortable in either scenario and perhaps he will be comfortable to just let the fight go where it may? With both fighters absolutely needing a win here to just to stay within a qualifying spot, this fight should be a highly entertaining, highly competitive one.

Prediction: Ibarra by Dec. Chailte’s form has been a little worse than Ibarra’s and he also looks to be a step behind in terms of skills at this point. Whether Ibarra is good enough to find a finish in this match up however, the jury is out.

Group C

Takayama Yataro (3-0 in Season, 143lbs) v Duke Nukem (2-0 in Season, 140lbs)

This next fight is one of the biggest so far this season. Undefeated group C front runner Takayama Yataro goes into his final bout of group stage against undefeated second placed Duke Nukem and this fight should be fireworks.

So far in his young career, Takayama Yataro has gotten off to a fantastic start. A decision win in the QFC system before the tournament start and then three in a row during the group stage all by TKO. Yataro’s wrestling has been the driving force behind his success followed by his brutal ground and pound once the fight hits the floor. Now, with a championship play-off place guaranteed, the only question going into this one is whether Yatato will manage to keep his perfect record intact.

Standing across the cage from him will be Belizean fighter Duke Nukem who is also yet to taste defeat. Nukem has looked exceptionally strong during his two group stage fights so far having won both by first round knockout. Up until now, Nukem has been relatively unchallenged, even in his match up against a favoured One Fortythree where he mixed up his striking from the outside and in the clinch and avoided most of the damage coming his way. This will definitely be Nukem’s toughest fight to date and whilst a championship play-off spot looks to be in the bag, a late run of bad results in the group stage could end up putting him at the mercy of fights elsewhere.

This has all the makings of a grappler versus striker match up although in this case the striker has a strong wrestling background himself which could make all the difference come fight time. Yataro hasn’t had much trouble getting fights to the floor however so Nukem may pressured into putting it on him quickly in order to secure the early KO. This fight is likely going to decide who will end the group stage in the number one spot and as group runners up face group winners in the first round of the championship play-offs, topping the group would likely bring some serious benefits.

Prediction: Yataro by TKO. Both fighters have been in fine form but Yataro has slightly more experience and currently looks unstoppable.

Anders Silver (0-2 in Season, 135lbs) v "The Little" Rascals Alfalfa (0-2 in Season, 130lbs)

Next up, a fight that comes purely down to pride as two fighters, currently joint bottom on minus two points look to pick up their first points of the season and ensure they don’t suffer the indignation of a winless campaign.

Anders Silver, the kickboxer from Singapore, looked much improved in his second fight of the season against One Fortythree, though in truth, it would have been almost impossible not to as he was unable to get off even a single offensive move in his opening bout. When given the chance, Silver looked slick on the feet, mixing up his striking nicely with kicks and punches to the head and body and was arguably winning the fight up until getting caught in the clinch and succumbing to a TKO loss.

His opponent Rascals Alfalfa, has had an equally disappointing season so far having lost his first two fights both in under two minutes though in fairness, he couldn’t have had a worse schedule as both of those fights have been against the current group leaders Takayama Yataro and Duke Nukem. Alfalfa too is predominantly a Muay Thai fighter though so far we have seen almost nothing from the youngster from Arundel, USA. Tonight, in something of a mirror match, Alfalfa is extremely likely to get an opportunity to show just what he can do on the feet when given a chance.

We’ve not seen much of Silver and even less from Alfalfa so predicting game plans is not really practical. On the feet, both look identical but physically Silver is quite a bit taller at 186cm and Alfalfa might find it difficult if his game plan is to strike from the outside. On the grappling side of things, Silver looks to be the superior fighter having earned his blue belt in BJJ and possessing slightly better wrestling than Alfalfa. Whether this will be something we see from Silver we will just have to wait and see. The main point about this fight is that it could very well end up being the only winnable fight for both fighters though in theory a third place finish could very easily be achieved if someone can turn their season around with a maximum point win here

Prediction: Draw. With so little to go on a draw seems to be the most logical conclusion at this time.

Group D

"Brilliant" Brian Marais (1-2 in Season, 138lbs) v Eunan Moray (0-2 in Season, 133lbs)

Moving on to the Group D match ups we have Brian Marais fighting hard to defy the odds and secure qualification to the further rounds and he’ll be taken on the so far disappointing Eunan Moray who is currently without a win.

Predicted early to finish last in the group, South African entrant Brian Marais goes into his final group stage fight knowing that a maximum point win would guarantee himself at least a place in the 5th place play-off and, pending results elsewhere, a long shot at the championship play-off. On the flip side, even a decision loss would drop him out of the tournament altogether. That is a lot of pressure on the shoulders of this young man and his young management team but possibly not quite as much as his opponent.

Eunan Moray, who was predicted to be one of the main contenders of the group and possibly even the tournament, has found himself joint bottom and still looking for his first win after two fights. Moray is dangerously close to being eliminated and only a win here in this match up will guarantee his survival in this tournament. A draw would still eliminate him. It is likely too that this is Moray’s last real fight in the tournament as his final group stage opponent is unlikely to return.

This one is a battle of BJJ brown belts though Moray has built up a slight edge of Marias on the feet and we could see Moray attempt to avoid trading submission attempts with Marais in favour of a KO finish. Marais has struggled to land a takedown in his most recent fights and so he will need to have improved in that area if he is to have any say in which this fight ends up. Neither fighter has looked particularly impressive off late and so this really could be anybody’s fight. With the loser guaranteed to be heading home as a result there truly is a lot riding on this one.

Prediction: Moray by Dec. Moray has not lived up to expectations in this tournament but I believe we may see him turn things around here against a younger, inexperienced management team and their young fighter.

Makhlamed Armagedoneov (0-2 in Season, 135lbs) v Tom Baker (2-0 in Season, 138lbs)

As it was in his last scheduled appearance Makhlamed Armagedoneov has not been seen nor heard from at this current time of writing and Tom Baker is likely to pick up a maximum point forfeit win.

Fortunately the situation hasn’t impacted too much on the results of the group and instead sets up Tom Baker for a final group stage showdown against Balor Fino to decide the winner of Group D

Silver v. Alfalfa better not end in a draw. I want to see one of these guys get a win before this tournament is over and I don't think either one will be the favorite in their final match of the season.

I agree mate. This one will likely be their best shot at not ending without a win.

So with that in mind, just a little something to spice it up this week...

50k to whoever comes closest to predicting the winner, method of win and time. Fights are 2 x 10 minute rounds!

Results and Group Standings have been updated on the first page.

With the final week of the group stage coming up, some fighters have now had their four group stage fights and have either been eliminated or are still awaiting their fate.

A brief look at the groups before a more detailed preview of the next event that I'll put out later.

Group A

With Polly Paulson's win over Nilton Guimaraes tonight he now guarantees himself a place in the final. Whether he goes through as the group champion or not comes down to his final group stage fight against Able Archer who up to now had looked a solid bet to qualify but after a shock finish loss against bottom of the group Nance Gibbord, he not only losses a point but also his first place spot and could be under pressure to even make it to the finals if he loses to Paulson and third place Pete Peterson able to pick up a win in his final match up. Peterson will go into his final match up with Nilton Guimaraes knowing that a win would at least put him into the 5th Place Play-Offs but also that the championship finals are a possibility. Guimares, who currently sits in fourth place would leapfrog Peterson with a finish win against him and also take his place in the 5th Place Play-Offs.

Fifth place Nance Gibbord has completed his group stages matches and though he goes home on a big win, a 1-3 record this season sees him eliminated from the tournament.

All in all, Group A will definitely be one to watch going into it's final group stage week.

Group B

It's amazing how quickly things can turn around. Gruff Dragon has spent most of the group stage looking like a dead certainty to qualify for the championship play-offs but after suffering a decision loss to Joe Slasher in his final group stage fight, he now sits in second place and is completely at the mercy of the final week. Joe Slasher has grafted hard this season and goes into his final fight against Crisostomo Ibarra who has struggled to get going this season. With a win Slasher would cement not only a qualifying position but also the number one spot in the group. Gichin Funakoshi in third place had his bye week this event and will be going into his final week against Chris Chaitle and both will have a lot to fight for. A maximum point win for Funakoshi would put him in second and into the championship play-offs and for Chaitle could make a great comeback and find himself fighting for 5th Place in the 5th Place Play-Off should he secure a win.

In the bottom spot is Ibarra who will be fighting purely for pride. Still looking for his first win this season, Ibarra's final fight against Slasher will be his last opportunity.

Group C

Things are a little more clear in Group C as Takayama Yataro took out his closest group rival Duke Nukem this weekend to finish in an untouchable first place and will now rest up until the finals as he has completed his four group stage fights.

Second place Duke Nukem is in a strong position still in second and currently four points ahead of the fighters underneath. Still things can change and if Nukem were to loss his final group stage fight against Anders Silver by a finish, he could theoretically find himself bumped down into the 5th Place Play-Off should his time in the cage be more than Silvers.

Anders Silver and One Fortythree are joint on 1 point each with Silver currently ahead by virtue of less time in the cage during his wins. One Fortythree will go into his final fight against Rascals Alfalfa who is still searching for his first win. Fortythree still has an outside chance to qualify for the championship play-offs but would need a very quick maximum point win in his last fight and would need Silver to beat Nukem in a very long drawn out fight to go through on time.

Alfalfa, though in bottom place, is not eliminated at this point and with a finish win against Fortythree could still make it into the 5th Place Play-Offs but would need Nukem to finish Silver and then rely on time spent in the cage.

Group D

Our last group is now locked and loaded. Tom Baker and Balor Fino, both undefeated after three fights, will now face off against each other in their final group stage bout to determine just who the king of the hill truly is. Baker currently ahead by virtue of time spent.

Qualifying for the 5th Place Play-Off is the feel good story of the tournament, the completely unfancied Brian Marais who was able to finish Eunan Moray in his final fight. Marais was predicted a last place finish at the beginning of the tournament so has done superbly to prove those naysayers wrong.

Eunan Moray, my pick for first, ends the tournament in fourth spot with out a win. Technically he has a fight left but his opponent hasn't been seen since losing his opening bout and so Moray will likely be handed a forfeit win that will not be enough to put him into a qualifying position

Duke Nukem: Congratulations to Takayama Yataro. A man can be measured by the quality of his opposition, and it was an honor to face you. Perhaps we will meet again.

Meanwhile, I'm looking to redeem myself. Unfortunately, this means Anders Silver has to die. My apologies in advance to Silver, and anyone who has to fight in his blood afterwards. I've always wondered why they use white mats; it's so gruesome looking after I'm finished working.

Iron Man Vale Tudo – 135lbs Grand Prix S02E05

The Underground, Los Angeles – November 5th 2018

Group Stage Round 5

Group A

Nilton Guimaraes (1-2 in Season, 135lbs) v Pete Peterson (1-1-1 in Season, 145lbs)

Our opening group A bout is between BJJ Brown Belt Nilton Guimaraes and sprawl and brawler Pete Peterson and with qualifying positions on the line things inside the cage are likely to get frantic.

Nilton Guimaraes comes into this fight off the back of some very up and down form so far having alternated losses and wins up to here. With a slightly sub-par season record of 1-2 all is not entirely lost for Guimaraes who, with a win here, could potentially leapfrog his opponent here into the 5th Place Play-Off instead of a plane home back to Rio. The incentive is definitely there but unfortunately for himself, the stakes for his opponent Pete Peterson are even higher.

Due to Able Archers shock upset at the hands of Nance Gibbord last event, Pete Peterson finds himself in a previously unlikely position of qualifying for the championship play-offs. Of course to get there he would first need to secure himself a finish win against Guimaraes who, as previously stated, is fighting for his own spot in the further stages but he also would need lady luck to lend a hand as second place Abel Archer would need to suffer another finish loss in his final group stage fight too to guarantee it.

Technically there are a couple of other ways that Peterson could find himself qualifying but all would then come down to fight time in the cage. Either way, to guarantee a place in the further stages of this competition, Peterson needs to make sure that his opponent Guimaraes doesn’t score any points off of him tonight.

In terms of match up, Peterson looks to be favoured in this one as Guimares doesn’t really possess the striking ability to go toe-to-toe with him on the outside and is also outgunned in the wrestling department meaning that bringing the fight to the floor could pose a problem. One positive for him however is that Peterson has enjoyed mixing up his striking both in the clinch and on the outside and if Peterson initiates the clinch in this one, Guimaraes may find an opportunity to pull guard and swing the advantage to his side dramatically. On paper though, Peterson is the one who should control where this fight goes and if he chooses to play it safe, it could be a frustrating night for the Brazilian.

Prediction: Peterson by Dec. He has lacked the power to finish fights so far and I can’t see that changing here tonight but equally, I cant see Guimaraes being able to get this fight to the floor and instead more likely to get outstruck over two long rounds.

Abel "83" Archer (2-1 in Season, 140lbs) v Polly Paulson (2-0-1 in Season, 141lbs)

This is the big one in Group A. First placed Polly Paulson takes on second placed Able Archer with the distinction of being Group A champion on the line.

Polly Paulson has done very well so far this season and remains undefeated after three fights. 2 wins and a draw mean that no matter what happens here, Paulson will be moving on into the championship knockout stages after tonight. The only question is whether he will be going there as Group A’s winner or runner up and with his opponent Abel Archer fighting to maintain his own spot in the finals, to call this fight competitive is likely to be an understatement

For Abel Archer, all of his hard work during the early stages of the season could be about to come undone. After two decisive KO wins over Pete Peterson and Nilton Guimaraes, a shock upset at the hands of bottom placed Nance Gibbord mean that Archer goes into this fight with the potential to miss out of the grand knockout stages of the tournament and instead drop down to the 5th place Play-Off’s which, while in no way is any great shame, is certainly not what a fighter like Archer would have been aiming for at the start of this tournament. A loss here means that Archer’s fate is out of his hands and that potentially, a fighter that he holds a victory over, could move up ahead of himself. If that isn’t motivational enough then I don’t know what is.

The fight looks to be fairly even though both fighters have significantly different skills. Archer looks to use his superior wrestling to control the clinch where as Paulson relies on his combination of Muay Thai and wrestling to give him options outside of the clinch at a distance. Both fighters have shown that they are capable of ending fights quickly although it isn’t thought that this fight is likely to do so. It’s probable that this fight will enter the clinch at some point and there we are really looking forward to seeing who’s style will come out on top. With so much on the line, one thing that can’t be ruled out is the possibility of both fighters cancelling each other out and the fight ending up as a lacklustre draw.

Prediction: Draw. I don’t see either fighter finishing the other but I do see them going back and forth in the clinch for the majority of it where neither will come out on top.

Group B

Chris "Lights On" Chaitle (1-2 in Season, 140lbs) v Gichin "Shoto" Funakosi (2-1 in Season, 135lbs)

Much like the previous group, a lot can happen in the final week of Group B’s fights and this match up between fourth place Chris Chaitle and third place Gichin Funakoshi will definitely have some serious ramifications on the final standings of the group.

Chris Chaitle has managed to battle back from his opening two losses and pick up a big KO win over Chrisostomo Ibarra in his previous fight. The win not only served to make sure Chaitle doesn’t walk away without getting his hand raised at least once during he tournament but also gives him a fighting chance at progressing into the 5th Place Play-Off should he be victorious here too. A decision win will not be enough either. For Chaitle to avoid elimination, he will need to win decisively against the 2-1 Funakoshi

For Gichin Funakoshi, his form has blown a little hot and cold though overall he retains a winning record. His biggest win in hindsight is without a doubt a decision win over Joe Slasher, who has proven himself to be as tough as expected, but his last victory, a KO win over Ibarra in just over a minute of the first round, really showed us that Funakoshi has some power in those fists of his. Make no mistake, there is a great deal riding on the result of this fight for the Okinawa representative. A win of any kind will see him move into the second place spot and a chance at tournament glory but should he lose via finish then it is Funakoshi who will be going home empty handed.

The tale of the tape seems to suggest that Funakoshi will hold the advantage in key areas of this fight though it doesn’t always count for much especially considering one of those area’s is in the boxing where Chaitle looked solid last time out and was able to out-strike a slightly superior opponent. The biggest weakness for Chaitle however will be in the wrestling where Funakoshi holds a sizeable advantage and was the biggest factor in his victory over Joe Slasher. Should the fight enter the clinch in this one it is likely to be one way traffic unless Chaitle can use it to pull guard somehow. On the floor Chaitle looks to be the better man and was able to go the distance with submission wrestling specialist Gruff Dragon where as Funakoshi was finished in his match up with Dragon late in the first round. The biggest problem for Chaitle is that he is a useless wrestler and he may find it difficult to secure up a successful takedown against Funakoshi though if he can mix up his striking to set up his attempts, his chances could be slightly better. On the outside, both fighters are similar though Funakoshi has a slight advantage but really it could be anyone’s on the night. A very interesting fight where superior game plans will definitely be the biggest factor.

Prediction: Funakoshi by Dec Win. Funakoshi has the wrestling to force this fight into the clinch where Chaitle will have no answers but to pull guard. Funakoshi has enough grappling skills to survive on the floor and force the stand up.

Joe Slasher (2-1 in Season, 140lbs) v Crisostomo "Simoun" Ibarra (0-2-1 in Season, 145lbs)

The final Group B match up between Joe Slasher and Crisostomo Ibarra will decide a great many things after the fight is done but mainly whether Slasher will move on as the group B champion

At the beginning of the tournament, Joe Slasher was predicted a third place finish and as of writing, a third place finish is the minimum finish that Slasher could achieve even with a loss. Whether or not Joe Slasher will be comforted by that fact or not we do not know, but what we do know is that a win here of any kind will see him move into the next stage of the tournament as the Group B champion.

His opponent is the under-performing Crisostomo Ibarra, a BJJ brown belt from Manila who finds himself smack bang at the bottom of the group and still looking for his first win. A situation that would never have been predicted at the beginning of the tournament where he was picked as a likely qualifier but now, after a draw and two first round losses both in under two minutes, Ibarra now has no chance of progressing further and he will fight purely for the pride of himself and his nation. Ibarra could also hold the key to current second place fighter Gruff Dragon’s fate who will no doubt be watching this fight anxiously and rooting for Ibarra to step up and spoil the party for Slasher. Ibarra has made decent improvements to his striking in the gym over the course of this tournament but will that be enough in this fight?

On paper, both fighters are almost the opposite of the other with both having made improvements in the best areas of their opponents. Slasher has some remarkable boxing and is known to possess some heavy hands. Most importantly he has been improving on the ground which was never more evident than in his last fight with Gruff Dragon where he showed exactly how to deal with a ground fixated wrestler. Remaining calm under pressure, Slasher was able to spoil the ground attacks of Dragon and get back to his feet and was able to make his strikes count when he got to throw which no doubt was an important factor in the judges decision. That showing might be worrying for Ibarra as the ground is no doubt where he will want to take this fight though he might fancy his chances as more of a submission technician than Dragon. However Ibarra decides to go about this, the wrestling is the key and as neither fighter is particularly well versed in that area, he will probably have a good shot at securing a takedown should he attempt one. Ibarra has made improvements in his stand up but I would be very surprised if he chooses to spend much time standing in the path of Slasher’s boxing skills.

Prediction: Ibarra by Submission. An upset is in the air. Ibarra hasn’t performed well but will be determined not to go home without a win. The lack of wrestling in this fight means that getting Slasher to the floor might be less of a problem and once there, Ibarra will find the victory he is looking for.

Group C

"The Little" Rascals Alfalfa (0-3 in Season, 130lbs) v "I Weigh" One Fortythree (2-1 in Season, 143lbs)

Pride is on the line next when bottom on the group “The Little” Rascals Alfalfa takes on fourth place “I Weigh” One Fortythree and this fight represents the last opportunity for Alfalfa to pick up a point.

There’s no debate here folks. Rascals Alfalfa has had a poor season. Moral is low and his back is against the wall. His most likely chance of a victory just slipped through his fingers when he lost to Anders Silver by TKO and now, in order to prevent himself walking away without picking up a single point, Alfalfa must somehow summon the internal fortitude to defeat wonderful wrestler One Fortythree who himself is battling for the possibility of making it into the championship play-offs. The chances of Alfalfa pulling off this upset is slim but he will definitely have a fair few fans rooting for him as the underdog.

For One Fortythree, things haven’t exactly gone to plan either. Predicted a first place finish at the start of the tournament. Fortythree has managed only one win out of three so far and finds himself in a rather precarious position. For him to continue on in this tournament in any capacity he will require a win but, even with a finish victory over his opponent tonight, his final standings in the group would still be something of a lottery and dependent on the other Group C bout here. A big win here could range from a place in the final knockout stages, a spot in the 5th Place Play-Off or at worst, on a plane home back to Jamaica.

On paper things look sure for a Fortythree victory. Alfalfa has a huge advantage in the stand up but so far hasn’t managed to find any kind of rhythm in the cage and has lost at all ranges of combat. One Fortythree very much fits the mould of a clinch fighter that relies on his wrestling to control the action on the inside and Alfalfa would be susceptible to that. That being said, One Fortythree hasn’t put on the best of performances so far and that is something that must be kept in mind in this match up. Still, he has done quite a lot better against the same opponents and because of that, he will go into this fight as the heavy favourite.

Prediction: Fortythree by KO. Alfalfa will need to put on a truly special performance to turn things around at this point and against a tough opponent with so much to win or lose here, this writer doesn’t believe it can happen.

Duke Nukem (2-1 in Season, 140lbs) v Anders Silver (1-2 in Season, 135lbs)

Next up, our last fight in Group C and another fight that will play a big part in determining who goes through to the finals. Second placed Duke Nukem takes on third placed Anders Silver.

Duke Nukem will be feeling the pressure going into his final group stage bout as things have certainly turned around somewhat since his last fight. Coming into his showdown against group leader Yataro, Nukem was a perfect 2-0, a good distance from his closest rival behind him and the London based Belizian was looking almost untouchable but after suffering a first round TKO loss he now finds himself with a slight chance of dropping out of the competition all together. If Nukem was to lose by a finish and results elsewhere went against him he would find himself relying on time spent in the cage to decide his final standing. Anything other then a loss of points would see Nukem safely through to the knockout stages of the finals. Even a decision loss or a draw.

His opponent is a man that stands to gain a lot through beating him here tonight. Anders Silver, a kickboxer from Singapore, managed to pick up his first win of the season last time out when he beat Alfalfa by first round TKO. His previous results had seen him finished by both opponents in the first round by TKO and seemingly without any chance of moving on in the tournament, up until now. Currently tied with Fortythree on 1 point, only time spent in the cage separates him and his rival and another win here really guarantees him nothing. Like Fortythree, a finish win could mean a place in the finals, the 5th place play-off or even outright elimination. His fate is up in the air but firstly, he must do his part.

If this fight was predicted before the last event, almost all weighing in would have picked Nukem as the heavy favourite but after their last respective performances, things seem a little more competitive all of sudden.

Both fighters seem to have similar styles though they both have very contrasting techniques to pull it off. Both fighters seem to prefer fighting from the outside but both have shown a willingness to engage on the outside. On paper it is Silver that would look to be the superior striker from that range especially with his height advantage but on this occasion Nukem may look to initiate the clinch more to take advantage of his superior wrestling and negate that. Neither fighter has shown much about them on the floor though it is Silver that has the better pedigree on paper once more as a Blue Belt in BJJ compared to Nukem’s white.

Prediction: Nukem by KO. I have a feeling that this fight won’t be as easy for Nukum as he might think but as all he needs to do is not drop a point and the fact that he has looked solid in all but his one fight against group winner Yataro, I think Nukem has what it takes to get the job done.

Group D

Tom Baker (3-0 in Season, 138lbs) v Balor Fino (3-0 in Season, 140lbs)

This is the fight to watch folks here in Group D. Undefeated fighters Tom Baker and Balor Fino go head to head to decide just who is the king of Group D

At the beginning of the tournament, England’s Tom Baker wasn’t predicted to even qualify in third, let alone second or first but now going into his final fight of the group stage, no matter the result, Baker will definitely be one the last eight in the final knockout stages. The fact that Baker was overlooked during the early stages has seemingly been a bone of contention for the youngster and his team who clearly felt disrespected with what has turned out to be a glaringly bad prediction. With a win here tonight, Baker will go through as the undefeated Group D winner and no doubt feeling fully vindicated.

To do that however, he will need to defeat another undefeated fighter in Balor “The Beast” Fino and if Fino was unhappy about his early prediction of only a second place finish, he has kept very quiet about it. Fino too is guaranteed a place in the finals but first it must be decided who will go there in the top spot.

Both fighters have walked a practically identical road so far and both hold victories over the same opponents. Both have benefited from a forfeit win over absentee fighter Makhlamed Armagedonenov and both have managed to pick up KO wins in each of their other two fights. Both fighters too have preferred to go toe-to-toe with their opponents which in no small part makes the anticipation for this match up all the more exciting. These fighters will meet in the middle and they will let their fists do the talking.

In terms of performance, it is Baker that has been the more dominant in his fights having needed barely over four minutes of cage time in total to get the job done. Fino has not been nearly as quick though overall, just as destructive.

Wrestling will not be an issue here with both fighters having a wonderful level of the art at their disposal. This one will come down, quite frankly, to pure guts and determination and who has the better game planning on the night.

Prediction: Baker by Dec. Baker seems dead set on proving the doubters wrong and has looked a little better against the same opposition so far. Fino will match him though but Baker’s power will sway the judges at the end.

Eunan Moray (0-3 in Season, 133lbs) v Makhlamed Armagedoneov (0-3 in Season, 134lbs)

Our last fight of the group stage is likely to be a non starter. Makhlamed Armagedonenov has now managed to miss two of his three fights and is extremely unlikely to show up for this final bout of his season. A probably forfeit victory for a very disappointing Eunan Moray who’s manager has admitted that the demoralised Scot has not even bothered to show up for training most of the time. Moray will leave the tournament with a single win on his record but he will not get his arm raised for it. Instead, that win will carry an asterisk and Moray, predicted to be a front runner in this tournament, will leave the tournament having severely under-performed.

Duke Nukem: Silvers is in for a horrible night at work. He isn't bringing anything to the table I haven't seen before, and I honestly feel like any of my sparring partners could put him away. He's scared to clinch, scared to stand and bang, and it won't do him any good to try to put me on the ground. His whole game plan is going to change after I touch him one time; the hardest part will be chasing him down so I can knock him out.

I wanted to say thanks for putting on this tournament. These are a major part of what is getting me addicted to the game, and I know personally after one FUBAR attempt at a debacle of a tournament, it takes a lot of logistics and planning. Good job.
