CFC Announces Huge LHW Signing

Canadian Fighting Championship Owner Matt Mac confirmed rumours today that #9 ranked Light Heavyweight in the world Max Marak had signed with the organization.

The jiu jitsu specialist sports an 8-0 record and the Boondock LHW championship. With all eight wins coming by submission “Metal” is truly one of the most dangerous people on the ground in mixed martial arts today.

The 24-year old will be YB Sol’s next opponent if the current Light Heavyweight king pin is able to get past his current opponent, another grappler, Travis Wood (5-0).

But that’s not all that’s happening in the CFC’s LHW division.

Amy D, manager of surefire contender Joey Zizzman (8-1) has challenged SynCity champion Paulo Mendez (8-0) to a fight – and the CFC has committed to releasing Zizzman to allow the fight to happen on Mendez’s home turf in Vegas with no compensation expected in return.

“I just think it’s the right thing to do,” said Matt Mac. “If you’re going to have a super fight, it only makes sense that the org with the higher-ranked fighter have the opportunity to host the spectacle. I’m not going to be the guy who people look at and say ‘that guy wouldn’t let the fights fans wanted to see happen.’ That’s not what the CFC is or ever will be. The ball is out of my court now. I’ll make this happen with no benefit to myself if the folks in Vegas want to play ball.”

Mac has also stated that the potential Zizzman/Mendez fight will be the next in line to face the incomparable YB Sol (10-0) – assuming the top-ranked fighter gets past his next two tests.

“This is the shot both of these fighters are looking for. Joey needs one more win to keep active while YB sorts out his next two opponents. I respectfully believe Mendez needs to face someone with the ability to keep the fight standing. It’s a perfect fit. If you are a 205 lb fighter, you’re not testing yourself if you’re not trying to get a fight with YB Sol.”

Smack talkers be warned. There's an awful lot of new talent in town.....

Vasiliev Most Recent Big-Name CFC Signee

Canadian Fighting Championship Owner Matt Mac has been extremely active in the past two months, attracting a handful of high-profile fighters to Montreal from around the globe.

Oleg Vasiliev (6-0) is the latest international superstar headed to the highly-ranked fight promotion. Vasiliev, the Russian Mob-Fighting lightweight champion, with five of his victories by way of submission. The slick submission ace is the 9th ranked lightweight on the planet and is rumoured to face CFC prospect Jafar Agrabah (4-1) in a potential #1 contender’s match in mid-September.

An equally impressive addition to the lightweight division is Leonard Khan (5-1). The 8th ranked lightweight on the planet and Extreme Fighting Arts former champion is a talented purple belt with fists of granite. To date just one of his opponents has dared to test him on the feet, a mistake that ended with a third round knockout.

Two huge names have also signed on to the CFC’s welterweight division. Former TapOut Fighting Championship king Daigo Goto (8-2) has been a perennial fixture in the division’s top 10 until his recent loss. Managed by YB Sol, one of the world’s premier managers, you can count on Goto to make a quick impression on CFC fans once he gets into the cage.

Joining him is Stan Butters (6-0), an undefeated prospect and ground ace out of Tokyo. The Battleground champion is expected to soon re-locate to Montreal to begin his training. Rumours close to his camp have said that he expects to be placed in a #1 contender fight soon, most likely against one of Amy D’s capable fights, Phal Um (8-2) or Jeffrey Lui (9-2).

Middleweight Victor Doomsday (6-0) is headlining a CFC fight card in his debut match against Anthony Lowe (8-4). Doomsday is considered an elite prospect who might be just a fight or two from a shot at the division’s new leader, knockout king Jake Franklin (7-0). Andre Galvao (6-1) has already made his Montreal debut and is looking to build on his knockout win over Jeppe Turska with positive effort against Davi Nanini (8-4), a CFC veteran who is equally as dangerous on his feet as he is on the ground.

Other key signings include Light Heavyweights Taka Gominori (6-2) and Retino Blastoma (5-1) while added depth has been provided to the heavyweight class with #1 contender Danger Takeshi (7-2), Axel Excel (4-0), Feng Wei (6-3) and promising newcomer Tim Solih (3-0).

“I can’t say enough how happy we are to have landed many of these fighters,” gushed Matt Mac, CFC proprietor. “This is going to allow us to continue to put on elite shows for our fans. CFC 50 was a massive success, and I’m confident our upcoming shows will provide nothing but the best quality of entertainment.”

"La Plaga" Pedro Guerrero signs 4 fight deal with CFC

Chip Douglas: Hi, Chip Douglas here with CFC's newest prospect Pedro Guerrero and Pedro.......this is a huge step in your career. You just went from fighting in mid level promotions based in New York to competing in the world's premier mixed martial arts organization. How did this opportunity come about?

Guerrero: My management reached out to many organizations in Montreal and the CFC was one of them. Many organizations throughout New York and Montreal showed interest in me, but I narrowed it down to Combat Pro FC and CFC. Combat Pro's deal was more attractive on paper, but I just couldn't say no to the level of competition that CFC presents. In Combat Pro FC I would have already been one of the top light heavyweights and a win or two would have surely catapulted me to a title shot, but in the CFC, I'm not even on the radar. This will allow me to motivate myself in ways that were simply not possible in organizations that would be give me an easy road to success.

Chip: It has been said that you have limitless potential and you have shown improvements in your abilities each and every fight, but as you alluded to it is the mental side of things that poses problems for you at times. Your debut in New York's Cult of Violence against jiu-jitsu specialist Adrian Rodriguez was an easy win and showcased your talents for both boxing and defending against grapplers, but you seemed disinterested in the fight overall despite having many opportunities to finish Rodriguez. You seemed content to jab him to death and keep your distance, cruising to a decision that was considered lackluster by many who attended the fight. Walk us through that night.

Guerrero: It was the most boring fight of my life, sparring in the gym and preparing for that fight was ten times was more of a challenge. He was a one trick pony that posed no threat to me other than his jiu-jitsu which he never got the opportunity to utilize. After stuffing his initial attempts at taking me down he tried to stand and trade with me, at that point the fight became a game.

Chip: The aftermath of the fight may have been even uglier. Bo Dayshus, owner of Cult of Violence criticized you heavily after the lackluster affair. It's been reported that he accused you of being boring and lacking knockout power, among other things. Two weeks later you were fighting for another organization the Bronx Fight Club.

Guerrero: Bo Dayshus is a bum, he should worry more about his fledgling organization and less about his fighter's tactics. Thats all I have to say about that. My management recommended BFC to me, apparently Rashid Ahmad ran another organization in LA and they had experience dealing wiht him.

Chip: Well you won your BFC debut easily and emphatically by 1st round KO. Johnny Sunshine just seemed to be outclassed in every way.

Guerrero: Pretty much.

Chip: Your number one contender match didn't go so well though. Your calm and non-chalant demeanor was replaced with aggression. After dominating the first round by knocking down Todd McPherson and mounting him you fell victim to his submission skills in the opening moments of the 2nd round after knocking him down once again. You chose to follow him to the ground for some reason.

Guerrero: It was a foolish move, but a blessing in disguise. If I were to win that match I would have fought for the light heavyweight title against Dane Hoy, who had just rcently won the title on the same card. However, Hoy was stripped of the title shortly afterwards after it was discovered that he was involved in a cloning scandal http://www.mmatycoon.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5079. This left the BFC in a state of disarray as they scrambled to figure out, who was worthy of fighting for the title. I ended up fighting at BFC's next event, dismantled Bruce Johnson, and now I'm in The CFC. In a way, I'm glad I lost.

Chip: And we hope to see you competing as soon as possible, any idea when your fighting?

Guerrero: Sept 29th is the most likely date for my debut. I have no idea who I will fight. All I know is I have the necessary skill set to defeat YB Sol, Magnus Machida, Andrew Carter and many other top light heavy weights in the CFC. La Plaga is coming.....

Chip: Wow, some serious names there. Either way, good luck with your career in the CFC.

Guerrero: Thank you.

The CFC is always stoked to bring in new prospects. Guerrero isn't ready for the big guns yet, but I'm confident he'll become a CFC mainstay.

Guerrero: You will all see how ready "La Plaga" is on the 29th.

YB Sol Defends CFC Honour, Reclaims Top Spot

Canadian Fighting Championship Light Heavyweight Champion capped off an excellent show at CFC 55 tonight with a unanimous decision victory over Synchronicity title holder Paolo Mendez.

In a back-and-forth contest, Sol was able to defend against Mendez’s astute submission attempts and earn enough points to take the decision with a mix of striking, takedowns and grappling control. Sol’s 13th consecutive win – a world record – headlined a record-breaking show for the CFC.

Co-headlining the card was a critical LHW bout between Andrew Carter and Meat Machine. Carter was able to swarm Machine with takedowns en route to a decision victory that will result in a re-match of their previous contest. Sol vs Carter II will occur on October 2 at the Montreal Sport Complex in front of 13,000 screaming mixed martial arts fans.

CFC fans next turn to Friday’s event headlined by a pivotal Lightweight title match between current champ Jordan Lee and upstart contender Leonard Khan. It is supported by a #1 contender’s match in the Welterweight division that pits CFC newcomer Daigo Goto against one of the premier ground’n’pound fighters on the planet in Phal Um.

The first round of the CFC’s WW Tournament also gets underway Friday with four match-ups.

Guerrero vs. Zizzmen confirmed for CFC 59

Reporter: An incredible opportunity awaits you here Pedro, Joey Zizzmen is a proven CFC veteran. A fight like this can really catapult you up the rankings in the eyes of many. What are your thoughts?

Guerrero: Matt Mac is definately showing me what the CFC is all about. Zizzmen is a championship contender in just about every other org around and before his loss to Paolo Mendez he was on the verge of being a title contender. This is a trial by fire, thats for certain.

Reporter: This is a fighter that is notorius for using his wrestling abilities to bring the fight into the clinch, pummel his opponents, and take them down. How do you plan to deal with his dirty boxing and excellent clinch work?

Guerrero: I've always focused more on the defensive aspect of grappling and my strength, wrestling, and muay thai have all improved since arriving in Montreal. I am confident I can counter his strategy.

Reporter: Where do you see yourself if you win this fight?

Guerrero: Two wins away from dominating YB Sol and winning CFC's Light Heavyweight Title.

*Jim Smithers post fight interview*

Interviewer: "Congratulations on your win Jim, its been a few months coming but ending your losing streak must make you happy"

Jim Smithers: "Yeah that is right....I got overwhelmed in the title fight and the after effects caused me problems in my next fight as well. I changed my game plan for them 2 fights and it didn't work for me so basically i went back to basics and once again have got that winning feeling."

Interviewer: "What is next for you?"

Jim Smithers: "Whatever CFC owner Matt Mac wants, i will take on anyone. I am gonna use this victory to propel me back to my old self and start finishing fights again and soon enough i will have enough wins to take on Mr Boondocks fighter and get my revenge"

Interviewer: "One last thing, happy birthday Jim. Well done and we look forward to seeing you again"

Jim Smithers: "Thanks"

Guerrero feeds Zizzmen a knee on his way up the Light Heavyweight ladder

Reporter: HUGE win for you Guerrero, not only did you win a high pressure CFC debut, but you defeated a solid veteran in Joey Zizzmen. This was a tall order by anyone's definition and you pulled off a stunning upset. How do you feel.

Guerrero: This is the greatest moment of my young career, I followed my gameplan down to the finest detail and outclassed a game fighter.

Reporter: You mentioned that you were going to focus on the defensive aspects of grappling in your training sessions leading up to the fight. This strategy seemed to pay off for you as Zizzmen was incapable of clinching with you and utlizing his legendary dirty boxing.

Guerrero: Yes, as I said my gameplan was perfect. Exactly what I envisioned.

Reporter: What's next for La Plaga?

Guerrero: I want Magnus Machida! A win over another veteran will help catapult me to a date with YB Sol and I will win that matchup.

Guerrero vs. Machida set to take place at CFC 63

Reporter: Well Pedro it looks like you got your wish. A fight with Magnus Machida now stands before you. This is a fighter that is much different than Joey Zizzmen, but is he more dangerous?

Guerrero: I don't think so. He's a talented submission artist, but I don't plan on allowing him to use those skills. This fight is gonna go where I want it to go.

Reporter: You do excel at defense and your wrestling is leaps and bounds ahead of his. What else will you be working on going into this matchup?

Guerrero: Wrestling and jiu-jitsu, Machida's striking is non-existant, and I already have more than enough ability to KO someone on their feet as evidenced by my performance against Zizzmen. It doesn't make sense to focus on strengths. Machida is a one dimensional fighter and lacks the ability to evolve. I am constantly improving, his game has grown stale. He was dominant in American Fight Mix, but his time in CFC so far has not been any thing to proud of. I'm going to knock him back to LA.

Reporter: Wow, strong words! How close would you be to a title shot after this matchup?

Guerrero: I think a win gets me into a number one contender match, simple as that. I would love a title shot, but with all the talent in CFC, I don't see that happening so quickly.

Guerrero sets himself up for a marquee matchup after smashing Machida in the 2nd round

Reporter: Guerrero, not only have you utterly crushed another stalwart veteran, but now you find yourself on the verge of possibly fighting the winner of Yb Sol vs. Gonzalez if all goes well on Oct. 30th where you will fight CFC notable Travis Wood.

Guerrero: I think the fight with Machida is nothing to get excited over personally. I simply exposed him as an overrated one dimensional fighter that should have never left LA. Zizzmen at least had multiple ways to finish a fight. Machida was supposed to be amazing on the ground, but he never came close to finishing me once, and that was his only weapon. Travis Wood will require more effort. He has better wrestling and jiu-jitsu than Machida and has enough skills on his feet to keep me honest. With Machida I just kept my distance and waited while he did the same thing over and over again. It was a big step down from competition compared to Zizzmen.

Reporter: Do you think you deserve a title shot if you beat Wood?

Guerrero: Absolutely, 3 wins in a row in the CFC is nothing to take lightly and Wood is clearly the number 3 guy in the division behind Gonzalez and Sol right now.

Reporter: What about Meat Machine vs. Khalidov? That match may yield a future title contender.

Guerrero: Maybe in the future, but not before the winner of Guerrero/Wood in my opinion. Let the winner of that fight fight the loser of Sol/Gonzalez, that's what I say.

Reporter: What is your strategy against Wood in this upcoming fight.

Guerrero: Defense wins championships, isn't that what they say? It worked against Machida and by the time I'm done training for Wood, he will be incapable of finishing me off on the ground. Once I accomplish that it's either a decision win or a knockout.

Reporter: You actually train at Big Woody's gym, named of course after Travis Wood. Won't the training sessions be a bit awkward?

Guerrero: Maybe, but it won't effect my training. I don't often train with him. I'm mostly Circuit Training with Gril Samousa, working on my defense, and sparring with other fighters. Travis does a little bit of everything, so he doesn't really have steady training partners. He's definitely the best guy at that gym right now though and at least for a little while longer.

Old school meets New School, as elder statesman YB Sol takes on up and coming superstar Pedro Guerrero

Reporter: Well this is it Pedro, it doesn't get much bigger than a match up with YB Sol.

Guerrero: This is why I signed up with the CFC to fight this guy right here. If you ever hope to be considered the best at light heavyweight you need to beat Sol.

Reporter: I think the most amazing thing about this scenario is that you actually turned down a shot at CFC champ Jesus Gonzalez. Why?

Guerrero: Like I said I signed up with the CFC, so I could fight Sol, not Gonzalez. It doesn't seem right to skip over Sol and get a shot at Gonzalez. His resume speaks for itself, he deserves a number one contender fight even if he just lost.

Reporter: Isn't that a bit risky though?

Guerrero: I don't think so. I'm still one of the youngest fighters in an organization packed with veterans and have accomplished quite a bit in my young career. I don't think a loss to Sol is anymore devastating than a loss to the champ and if I beat Sol it will create a scenario where the two best light heavyweights in the world end up fighting for the title, rather than a guy many people still don't believe in fighting the best fighter in the world.

Reporter: Jacare is going to get a shot at Gonzalez on the same card. How do you feel about that?

Guerrero: I'm lukewarm to the idea. Jacare has been around a while and is a former champ, but he is not as highly regarded or as good as me right now. Simple as that. He's an overrated fighter getting a rematch because it took Gonzalez a little longer to KO him than the average fighter. Souza was coming off a 2 fight losing streak upon entering the CFC and beat a mid-tier fighter in Dave Hawkins. He's a good fighter, but I don't think he is deserving based on recent performance. On the other hand you can't have the best fighter in the world sitting on the sidelines for the next 10 cards.

Reporter: If you beat Sol, do you think you have the tools to beat Souza or Gonzalez?

Guerrero: Souza yes, Gonzalez maybe. I have the tools to beat him, but his striking ability shouldn't be underestimated. He's dangerous.

Reporter: Back to Sol now, what is your plan for that fight?

Guerrero: Force him to stand, his wrestling is his only weakness as far as I can tell. He is excellent on the ground, but has been incapable of deciding if the fight goes there or not at times. Gonzalez was in danger on the ground for a few moments, I won't be. I expect Sol to be cautious, the last time he fought a striker he woke up in the locker room. He will be looking to grind out a decision, I will be looking to grind my fist into his face.

Reporter: Well good luck with your strategy. A win is sure to catapult you to the status of an elite light heavyweight.

Looks like Steve Belisle and Terrell Reed are starting on a good track to own the Prospect division. First fight went well for both fighters who did not give a chance for the judges to make a decision. Like Dana White's says : never leaves it in the judges hand. These 2 fighters know exactly what it meant and did not give an inch of chance to their opponent. Let's wait and see what their next opponent will be.
