RISE 105 & 106

(19th October 2019)

RISE 105

(Redeemerarena, Rio de Janeiro)

Since the beginning of the year, one man has dominated the heavyweight ranks here at RISE and that man is the very

aptly named UberThor Hammerfall. Currently on run of eight straight wins, Hammerfall has finished every single one of his opponents often leaving them either bloodied and disfigured or simply as an unconscious broken heap on the canvas. A terrifying figure with a voracious appetite for destruction, Hammerfall will look to add to his impressive list of fallen foes by picking up another victory over a man that he has already beaten.

A complicated past run of events finds title challenger Mario Farina as a former champion who technically never lost his belt. After being stripped for inactivity due to his

former manager going AWOL, Farina returned under new guidance but for whatever reason was never offered a return title shot to reclaim what was rightfully his. Until now that is.

Farina actually left once more since that time but now returns with more experience under his belt after picking up a title in the now defunct AEW and upon a successful return bout against

Samson Fortier has earned the right to face the King of 265lbs, UberThor Hammerfall.

As previously mentioned, these two fighters have met before and it didn't end well for Farina that time around. A third round TKO, Farina will be hoping to do better with the benefit of

six months preparation and, in truth, is fully expected to do so. Can he actually defeat UTH though? That remains to be seen and Hammerfall would definitely be the odds on favourite to put in a repeat performance.

At the top of the 265lbs division, other challengers will be watching closing including Fedor Emelianegro who has returns to RISE after some time away. Emelianegro is currently down

1-2 against the champ with both previous meetings ending by second round stoppage. Another fight that could potentially give us our next number one contender is the fight between

Jorge Cruz Jr and new arrival Ross Kemp who is the former Budokai heavyweight champion.

Next up we have the dominant force in the RISE Featherweight sphere, Henrique Gusmao taking on underdog challenger Calixto Cardona. Cardona is a new arrival here at RISE having spent the bulk of his career over at Budokai FF in Tokyo where he was able to contest for the title on one occasion. Earlier in his career however, Cardona managed to capture the MMAHelsinki strap and defend it once before the org collapsed. In truth, Cardona is seen as a very long shot challenger in this one but he has faced tough opponents before and never disgraced himself.

For Gusmao, this will be his forth defence during his second reign as champion with his rivalry with Great Tiger being one of the biggest in the company. Currently up 2-1 in those showdowns, Gusmao has waited patiently for another challenge while the division was restructured and now it looks as though a win here tonight would bring about yet another showdown between those respective camps as Great Tiger was declared the technical winner of the Featherweight 8 man tournament. That’s not to say Gusmao can overlook his opponent tonight though. Cardona is a BJJ Brown Belt against Gusmao’s purple and has been known to snatch a few submission wins in his time. Great Tiger was able to catch Gusmao that way on one occasion so perhaps Cardona will be looking to do the same? Perhaps this is something that plays on Gusmao’s mind? Then again, with a perfect 100% KO record in 17 victories, maybe Gusmao is fearing no fighter at all right now at least at 325k and at this weight.

Other notable fights on that card include a fairly quick rematch between two former champions Pentti Pentele and DeMario Valdez. This will actually be Pentele’s first appearance back in the cage since losing his title to Tud Stoddler in September. Pentele was also the man who took the title from Valdez the month before. That fight was a tough five round battle that went the distance and ended in a some controversy. Many thought that Pentele won rounds one and two while Valdez claimed the remaining three. Some strange judging rules were in place for that event which means the fight was scored as a whole and the judges deemed that it was indeed Pentele that had done the most overall. A frustrating way to lose a title for Valdez but now a chance to prove that was the better man all along. For either, it is strongly hinted that a win would be enough to earn another crack at the title.

RISE 106

(The Docks, St Petersburg)

Over in St Petersburg it is Trond Asmundsen versus Torcadall Sailcirc headlining the show and some have voiced their disapproval over the top billing. In truth, it was supposed to be Flyweight champion Sergei Petrov defending his 135lbs belt against wrestler Preston Mason once again but Mason has not returned any phone calls or been seen or heard from in sometime. He has until the day of the fight to claim his title shot so it could still possibly happen but looks unlikely.

Asmundsen and Sailcirc won’t mind though and I’m sure they will relish the opportunity to shine and put on a show. Asmundsen is a new arrival here at RISE and a former champion over at MMAHelsinki. Sailcirc obviously needs no introduction as a RISE veteran and former Middleweight champion here. Neither fighter has been in the best of form of late but the potential for a great scrap is there.

A very exciting Super-Heavyweight showdown is also on the cards with grappler Ted Bundy taking on elite boxer and striker Bunkechukwu Floyd. Floyd is a fighter that has been on the RISE radar for some time and we are very excited to see what kind of career he can make here. Bundy too is a superb signing at 265lbs+ and the young 7-1 prospect looks as though he also could have a great future ahead of himself. Both in great form, it’s very possibly that victory here could lead to a title shot though that isn’t confirmed as yet.

Also on the card is the final of the Featherweight Road to Glory tournament that will see a number one contender crowned as well as the winner receiving 250k bonus money. RISE mainstay and two time contender at two different weights Eta Knox takes on the much less experienced Astro Traveller for the opportunity to challenge for the title.

This should be a great final with Knox having a big advantage in experience but Traveller having the slight edge skill wise in a couple of areas. Knox has won two decisions in a row to get here beating both Brandon Kay and Kisada Hida while Traveller has arguably had the harder path to get here and has looked phenomenal while doing so. KO victories over both Santiango Bizihwaelie and Black Alligator mean that Traveller just might be the odds on favourite to get the win here

ROAD TO GLORY 135lbs - COMPLETE

Congratulations to Astro Traveller for a fantastic run in the 135lbs tournament and becoming the No.1 challenger to the title.

He faced arguably the toughest side of the bracket and took out some decent names along the way.

He receives a bonus 250k pay out and will be offered a showdown against champion and potential RISE hall of famer, Sergei "St Petersburg Strangler" Petrov

RISE FIGHT LEAGUE - 2019 HALL OF FAME

Congratulations to the 2019 inductees to the RISE Hall of Fame.

Quite a few entries this time around. Probably more so than would be usual but as there hadn't been any for quite a while I thought it was best to just catch up in one go.

In my mind, everyone here is deserving of their space though some will be far more obvious then others. Some will have made their mark long ago and may well be past their prime now (or even retired as is the case with some) and some might be considered a little premature though I would argue that they had already done enough in comparison to others.

Rumour has it, Henrique Gusmao and Great Tiger had an altercation outside of a nightclub in London ahead of their RISE MAIN EVENT, meeting in the cage for the 4th time.

Both men were seen throwing punches with their entourage until the police broke it up. 3 men were arrested and charged with assault after 3 officers were left in serious condition. Names were not released but the fight is still on according to all reports.

Don't miss this one, as bad blood boils over for the Title.

I also heard a rumour that someone got the better of the other and the other blamed that on wearing dress shoes?

Road to Glory

Welterweight 16 Man Tournament

The first round has now been completed and all second round offers have gone out for three weeks time.

Some interesting results to found including a shock submission loss for the org's number one submission specialist Jihn Markell. He lost to Matuez Biernat, who while no stranger to the grappling world himself, was definitely not expected to be getting a sub win over Markell. He now goes on to face Frank Marciano 3rd who got a decision win over journeyman fighter Kamakiri Yorimoto

Tournament favourite and former welterweight champion William Snowdon eased into the second round with a submission win over RISE vet Yokuni Togashi. He now matches up against unfancied Woody Wood who earned his spot with a spectacular second round head kick KO over Khaba Dagestanskiy

Filling out Bracket 1 will hopefully be Balder Bull against Ronnie White. Bull is a former champion at BFF and managed to shut down ground and pound expert Lynn Steinheiser in the first round. Though time may not seem to be on his side, he is managed by a recent number one manager in Mac Little and should definitely be taken seriously in the tournament. He faces stiff competition in the next round however in elite wrestler Ronnie White. White is seen as another potential favourite for the tournament and that was never more evident as he took out Narek Sirakanian by second round submission after taking some stinging shots to the head in the first round of the fight.

Lastly we should have Mario Rossi taking on Conner O Malley. Neither have been given much chance in the tournament overall but Rossi looked solid in his third round TKO win over Bob Hauweg as did O Malley with his third round submission win over striking superstar Tyrell Williams. That one should be a very exciting match up.

RISE 112

(8th November 2019, University Park, Los Angeles)

Tud Stoddler attempts his second title defence of his third reign in a quick rematch from the man he took it from this time around, Pentti Pentele. Pentele defeated DeMario Valdez to earn the shot with a dominate decision victory which saw him claim every round from every judge.

Since their last meeting, Stoddler has made one defence already, a sensational first round KO over #2 Valerio Bartoli managed by Alex K. The result was definitely a shock for me as many predicted a much tougher fight but Stoddler has been looking extremely dangerous of late with five KO wins out of his last five.

On paper the fight looks very even with nothing much having changed from before. Pentele will need to do something much different this time around if he is to trouble Stoddler. Stoddler looked very much in control during the first four rounds and the fact that he was able to finish the fight in the fifth means that he is always a threat.

In terms of who might be next for the winner here, that will almost assuredly be down to current #3 Ernest Graves. Managed by The GBU’s Authur Vandelay, Graves very briefly held the title back in April but lost it to Stoddler in his first defence. Currently on a three fight win streak with all three being by finish, Graves has quietly worked his way back up the rankings and with only Pentele and Bartoli ahead of his, Graves will be the next in line.

Further down the line we have RISE newcomer Jason Stackhouse, the highly hyped KO machine managed by John Daugherty also of The GBU alliance. Stackhouse has fought EVERYWHERE it seems and currently resides at #5 after his debut win over Roy McDavid. Stackhouse faces #6 Julio Cesar Sitsongrit (Grumpy Bastard) next on the 29th Nov with a win all but guaranteeing him the next shot.

We definitely couldn’t get away without mentioning the co-main even of the evening which again is a Lightweight showdown. Current #2 Valerio Bartoli takes on #4 DeMario Valdez. Both former champions themselves, it seems implausible that this will be the first time they cross paths but that’s exactly what it is.

With both coming off loses in big fights, both fight fighters will be keen to turn things back around and get on with chasing that championship gold though it’s extremely unlikely that a single win here would be enough to warrant an instant shot at the title.

Bartoli definitely seems to have the more developed game but then he has been in it just a little bit longer. Valdez currently sports a perfect 100% record of KO’s meaning that if he’s going to win, he’s going to knock you out too. With neither fighters being easy to finish, it definitely bodes well for the crowd in attendance.

The Bantamweight title is also on the line tonight with RISE superstar Sergei Petrov taking on the winner of the 135lbs Road to Glory 8 man tournament, Astro Traveller.

Petrov continues to add to his impressive win streak with absolutely no showing of cracking under the pressure. 14 fights undefeated, this bout also marks Petrov’s sixth attempted defence.

In comparison, 4-2 Traveller is a green as you can get but he did earn this shot by seizing the opportunities presented. Finishing each one of his opponents on route to winning the 8 man tournament, Traveller has set himself up for the perfect Cinderella storybook ending. Can he upset the dominant champion? Managed by a former #2 (current #22) manager Pablo Spezziale, you’d certainly have to give him at least a small chance surely.

In truth, Petrov has practically cleaned out this division with recent challenger Glass Joe being perhaps the greatest threat to his throne. It was a close fight but Petrov took it and with Joe’s advancing years it’s very difficult to see what kind of improvements he could make from here. Still, he is formidable and he quickly returned to winning ways with a win over current #9 Kisada Hida. He next meets #7 One Fortythree on the same date and could possible earn a rematch with a win there. Elsewhere newcomer Twea King (#3) looks like a solid prospect but he is still very young and manager Aylib 2.0 doesn’t mess around if he suspects his fighters aren’t anything but top quality.

Current #5 Dieselnoi Por Pramuk could be somebody to look out for a little down the line possibly. Still ranked too low P4P to be considered for the title, another couple of wins to add to his two fight win streak and Pramuk could definitely be seen fighting for the title. He next meets #8 Hratch Tzien on 15th November.

A new signing to RISE and as yet unranked in the division is Takayama Yataro who makes his way over from the new defunct Empire FC org. Yataro got his start as a creation tournament fighter and is managed by former #1 manager Alexander Melchiott. Yataro is still very young himself but arrives with a good deal of hype and a solid fan base and a couple of wins would definitely put him high in the 135lbs rankings.

RISE - Road To Glory

8 Man Light-Heavyweight Tournament

WINNER - COREY SMITH JR

http://mmatycoon.com/gallery/0/15213067353361.gif

Congratulations to Corey Smith Jr who was finally declared the Road to Glory 205lbs tournament winner.

Smith had some great fights along the way defeating both Desmond Okafor and Patty O Reilly in the first and second round before meeting Rhymin Slayin in the final. That initial fight took place on the 26th October but unfortunately, after such a close fight, the judges were unable to decide between them and the fight was declared a draw. With a tournament winner needing to be crowned the only real option was to run things back and that's exactly what happened. This time round at least two of the three judges saw things in Smith Jr's favour and now we have our next challenger to the title.

Along with having earned his title shot, Smith Jr also receives a bonus 250k for winning the tournament.

RISE 114

(15th November 2019, The H20 Arena, London

A featherweight title fight between Henrique Gusmao and Great Tiger will headline RISE 114 and this will be the fourth time these two warriors meet in their careers.

Gusmao of course needs no introduction as the champion who has absolutely dominated the RISE 145lbs division for the past year. Currently sporting a truly champions record of 18-2, the only blemish on Gusmao’s RISE record was a loss to his opponent here tonight. A loss that he has already gone about avenging back in August. Out of 18 victories, Gusmao has displayed a real predatory instinct and has managed to finish every single one of them by KO. Basically meaning that unless your chin is made of absolute granite, Gusmao will find a way to crack it in the end.

For Great Tiger, he is definitely coming in as a slight underdog despite being a former champion at this weight himself. He earned his shot through the featherweight Road to Glory tournament but due to some poor planning which saw him and team mate Kron Diego meet in the final, it was decided that Tiger would be declared the default winner.

Gusmao is currently up two fights to one and it’s fair to say that between the two of them, Gusmao and Tiger have created one of the most exciting rivalries currently in the org.

Breaking down the fight is fairly simple. Gusmao hands out KO’s for fun and Tiger has been accused of having a suspect chin. Gusmao has noticeably better hands and slightly better wrestling meaning it really is going to be hard going for Tiger on the feet. What Tiger does have over Gusmao however is a much better ground game. A BJJ Black Belt against Gusmao’s purple, Tiger has racked up several wins by submission already and this would be, without a doubt, his best path to victory. Also, he has done it once before to Gusmao. Can he do it again this time around? Stay tuned folks!

Elsewhere in the division the most logical next contender will be found when current #2 Ryan Rodriguez takes on #5 Phillip Ziskie on November 22nd. Rodriguez, a former champion at the obscurely named and now defunct DropKick Cage Warriors and Ziskie a former champion at Sydney Fights. Both fighters on two fight win streaks, it’s likely a victory here would make them the #1 contender.

Other notable mentions include the obvious Kron Diego who is currently sitting at #3. Diego has lost to both Gusmao and Rodriguez recently so will really need at least another win before consideration. Another potential problem for Diego could be if team mate Great Tiger wins the title. While it would be champagne all round for Team Burns, this would mean Diego having to sit around waiting for both his stable mate to fail and to keep winning to ensure he is next in line when and if that time comes. Not an ideal situation at all especially when rumours have circulated that Diego has been questioning whether he even has what it takes at this level any more.

#7 Chad Yonic could be someone to watch down the line. A young fighter at only 24, Yonic is currently 2-1 since joining RISE and will be facing hard hitting striker and #6 ranked Henry Wallace on the same night. A win for either would keep them moving in the right direction.

Lastly special mention must go Stanly Kubrick, the first ever 145lbs here at RISE and recent inductee into the RISE Hall of Fame. He recently returned to the mix under new management after more than a year away from the cage and instantly got back to winning ways when he defeated skilled journeyman Altansarnai Shinjo by first round KO. After such a long time away from the game however it will be extremely interesting to see just what manager Jay Stanley can get out of him and whether he can even come close to his former glory days.

Finally got this belt back again, it was a long road back to the top, but I did it. Props to Gusmao, guys a beast, at this rate we're gonna end up fighting 15 times. We're both still so young and it's kind of a shame two such amazing fighters have to spoil their records against each other but we aren't bitches and we know we want to fight the best."

Congrats to the new champ Great Tiger. A super tough fight over a dominant champion but tactics were absolutely spot on on this occasion.

Nothing worse than fighting the same fighters over and over so for the moment, Gusmao has decided to move up to 155, opening the door to new match ups and opportunities.

There is no denying it, the 145lbs is extremely bare so RISE is looking for any talent that feels that they can compete at this level. For now though there are some up and coming challengers that should keep the division interesting and there is always the possibility of Gusmao moving back down in the future.
