WC: WEDNESDAY NIGHT FIGHTS 2 - PREVIEW

JUNE 10, 2015 - LIVE AT THE LIBERTY DOME

We've got a real doozy of an event coming up on us. World Combat Championship is truly a fight organization on the rise, and this card will go a long way to continue legitimizing them. We've got some real top-shelf matchups, including a co-main that could very well've been the main and will go very far towards determining the future of the featherweight division, and the main event Light Heavyweight title matchup that'll throw two fighters with worlds of momentum behind them at each other and see who comes out alive. Without further ado, lets run through the card.

Middleweight Division – Ari Wilenius, 3-1-0 (0-0-0 in WC) vs Jesus Muchello, 0-1-0 (0-1-0)

We open up the evening with one fighter who’s looking to build on some outside success, and another who’ll be simply trying to create any success whatsoever of his own.

The Finnish Wilenius will be making his first appearance ever in a WC ring, and he certainly boasts quite the highlight reel. His first professional fight was a five-second TKO win over Cole Ohmsford, and he’s barely slowed down since, taking only one loss (by decision) in his 4 QFC outings and winning his most recent bout by 1st round TKO over a very game Rodrigo Silva. The worlds of the QFC and an organization like the WC are miles apart, however, and if Wilenius expects to coast to victory solely based on the results of his QFC fights, well, he’ll almost certainly experience a rude awakening.

“Zeus” Muchello, on the other hand, comes in with much less hype and, to be frank, very little known about him at all. Muchello made his WC (and professional) debut at WC 20, where he fell to Phil Taylor (who’ll also be in action in this event) by 2nd round TKO. It hasn’t seemed to got him too down, though, and it’s certainly not as if he’s completely hopeless; he comes with a quite notable boxing base, and possesses the sort of knockout power that can put him right up near the top of the WC very quickly if he’s given an opening.

PREDICTION: Muchello by 2nd round KO

Featherweight Division – Conor Brazier, 1-2-0 (0-1-0) vs Yoshi Twister, 3-2-0 (0-1-0)

We then move down a few weight classes to what should be a very tight battle between a knockout artist and a submission specialist, both of who are looking to give their WC careers a big jumpstart.

“King” Brazier started his career in New York, where he lost in his pro debut to QFC lifer Slow Learner before joining Montreal Fight Nights for one fight, where he dominated Conor McConnell to the tune of a 1st round KO. He then made his WC debut at Dirty Boxing 2, tapping out to a Pound House triangle choke in the 2nd round. Brazier’s strategy isn’t difficult to figure out; he uses his solid, though not spectacular wrestling abilities to keep his opponent off balance until he’s able to utilize his big time boxing skills to try and score a KO. Whether Twister gives him an opening to do so may well be the deciding factor of this match.

The Tokyo native Twister holds neither the boxing nor wrestling abilities of Brazier, but outclasses him when it comes to BJJ and certainly comes in as the more successful of the pair. Twister opened up his career with two straight QFC 1st round submission victories before joining up with the now defunct Tokyo-based Choke. After winning his first fight in the company in less than forty seconds with an armbar, Twister has not been able to see the same sort of dominance since, taking a first round KO at Choke’s final event and then tapping out in the first round to Jackson Ramos at Dirty Boxing 2. Twister has never been in a fight that’s gone past the first round, so if he doesn’t get on Brazier early and make things uncomfortable for the King, it may well be bad news for him.

PREDICTION: Brazier by 1st round KO

Bantamweight Division – Nigel Benn Jnr, 3-0-0 (0-0-0) vs Timmy TwoTone, 6-3-0 (0-1-0)

The third fight of the evening matches up two fighters who’re almost mirror images of each other. One is looking to continue their undefeated start to their career, while the other is looking to reclaim whatever magic made them unbeatable earlier in their career.

Benn Jnr had his welcome to professional MMA in the Immortals organization in New York, and won all three of the fights he had there, albeit all by decision. That on its own is enough to have some people questioning whether he’s truly good enough to sustain his undefeated record, and it’s not as if those fights were against top flight opponents, either (his opponents hold a cumulative record of 4-8-0). To put too much stock into this, however, would be unfair to NBJ; he’s certainly got the Muay Thai striking ability to put opponents away, and he’s shown off his wrestling ability many a time in his past bouts. A win here, especially one by an actual finish, would do wonders towards quieting Benn Jnr’s doubters.

A loss for him, on the other hand, may send him down a path similar to his opponent for the night. That’s not to discount TwoTone as a fighter; similar to Benn Jnr, his greatest strengths are his Muay Thai and his wrestling, but he also has much sharper boxing experience to draw upon as well. It’d be fair, though, to say that TwoTone’s career hasn’t been trending in the direction he’d prefer it to be. After a 5-0 start to his pro career (4 of those 5 wins coming in the first round, and all by finishes) he’s gone 1-3 since, most recently tapping out in the first round to Arthas Menethil at WC’s inaugural Wednesday Night Fights event. It’s a tough debate over who has more to lose in this fight, but it’s certain that if TwoTone doesn’t want to fade into obscurity, he’s going to have to pull out all of the stops here.

PREDICTION: Benn Jnr by 3rd round TKO

Middleweight Division – Phil Taylor, 1-0-0 (1-0-0) vs Pier Dolly, 3-0-0 (0-0-0)

Speaking of young undefeated records, there’s a pair of them here that’ll both be looking to stay alive. This fight may also serve as the proxy battle for the age-old debate of quality vs. quantity (to a small degree, though).

Representing quality is Taylor, who, though he only has one professional fight, had it in the WC. A dominating performance led to a 2nd round TKO of Jesus Muchello at WC 20, and Taylor will look to build on that versus Dolly. A world class Muay Thai practitioner, Taylor certainly should be focusing on finding his spots to unload on Dolly and, if he’s successful, look for another victory for a man who could be one of MMA’s next rising stars.

Quantity, on the other hand, lays its hopes at the feet of Dolly, a man with triple the fight experience of Taylor, all of which coming from the QFC. All three wins came by decision, which speaks to the popular opinion on Dolly: he’s good enough at both Muay Thai and wrestling to keep himself in matches, but perhaps lacks the finishing power to really put opponents away. Nonetheless, if Taylor doesn’t do enough to make Dolly uncomfortable, there’s a very good chance Dolly could take this bout.

PREDICTION: Taylor by 2nd round TKO

Middleweight Division – Pavel Datsyuk, 2-1-0 (1-1-0) vs Cain Jones 2-0-0 (0-0-0)

Two relative unknowns face off here, but both come in already with a fairly known game plan, so we’ll have to see who’s able to execute theirs better.

Datsyuk is most comfortable on the ground and in the grappling arts, and he uses reckless abandon to get to those positions. As such, all three of his fights have ended in the 1st; both of his wins when his aggressive attacks on his opponent led to him manufacturing a perfect opportunity (including a beautiful feint leading to an armbar that won him submission of the night at WC Fight Night: April Fools), and his loss when he got a little too aggressive and gave Marcus Child an opening to knock him out at WC 20. Whether he’s learned from that match or he sticks to his guns, he’ll be sure to try and make this one an exciting fight.

Jones, on the other hand, is much more of a standup fighter and hasn’t looked as aggressive as Datsyuk thus far. That’s not to say his fights aren’t exciting, as he certainly keeps the action moving, but he seems to look more to control the fight than finish it. It’s worked so far in Jones’s young career, but facing a fighter the likes of Datsyuk, we may now see if he’s able to take his spots when he needs to a finish an opponent off.

PREDICTION: Jones by 1st round KO

Bantamweight Division – Ville Ahokas, 6-2-0 (4-1-0) vs Kirk Lancaster, 7-4-0 (0-0-0)

A pair of well-balanced fighters take to the cage in this one, both of whom are just on the cusp of breaking into bigger opportunities, and neither who’ll be letting their guard down at all.

A former amateur boxer from Helsinki, Ahokas started his career 5-0 before dropping two straight tough ones by decision, then got back on track with a majority decision over Conway Jennings at WC 20. Despite his boxing background, though, he possesses the wrestling and Muay Thai ability to back it up and keep his opponents from keying in on his KO power. If he mixes it up well here and keeps Lancaster guessing, he could certainly leave Lancaster lying at the end of this one.

Lancaster will be making his WC debut here after chalking up a 4-1 record in the Hilo based LFC. He showed his proficiency in aspects in the company, his most notable highlight being a TKO win off of a slam 5 seconds into the 1st round. His wrestling ability is certainly the most notable but, similar to Ahokas, he’s got enough other stuff in his bag o’ tricks that to key in on one aspect of his game would be foolish. This fight may truly come down to the first of these two to make a mistake.

PREDICTION: Ahokas by 3rd round KO

Heavyweight Division – Smokey Simpson, 4-2-0 (1-0-0) vs Rick Rude, 4-2-0 (0-1-0)

The first of the two heavyweight matchups on the card, it’d be fair if outsiders had a hard time telling these guys apart, at least when it comes to their fight styles (though they look nothing alike). Slobberknocker fans had better be ready, as this one should be a good ol’ slugfest.

Simpson’s been a bit of a journeyman in his career up to this point; he was with two different managers before settling with his current one, and only had one fight in the now-defunct Hilo-based WHCF before splitting. His WC career got off to a strong start with a 1st round TKO of Kale Strong at WC 22, and another win may lead to this wanderer finally finding a home. He’s like Rude, is a world class boxer, but his main advantage over Rude comes from his BJJ prowess, which he may have to lean on to pull out a victory.

Rude also debuted at WC 22; however, his performance was less impressive, as he found himself KO’d by San Terra in the 1st round. In fact, every single one of Rude’s pro fights have only been one round long, perhaps owing to an aggressive need to finish fights present inside. Rude’s main advantage comes from his grappling abilities, though he doesn’t always like to use them. He much prefers to keep things standing and swing for the fences, and that may be his downfall here.

PREDICTION: Simpson by 2nd round KO

Heavyweight Division – Drew Carvalho, 6-0-0 (1-0-0) vs Capital Punishment, 4-4-0 (0-0-0)

One’s a two-discipline specialist who does nothing but win, while the other is a hard-working all-rounder who refuses to be intimidated. One claims he’ll “crush your dreams with the flick of the wrist,” the other was, apparently, “born to fight”. No matter how this fight turns out, it truly won’t be lacking entertainment value.

Carvalho carries his 6-0 record and the swagger that comes with it. He’s an alumnus of the now-defunct Amsterdam-based Combat Purist, where he won the heavyweight title in the company’s debut event and held onto it until the company died. He’s completely shunned BJJ and Muay Thai for the good old-fashioned one-two punch of boxing and wrestling, and one’d be lying if they were to say that it hasn’t worked for him. Carvalho, quite simply, carries the “it” factor, and it’s quite frankly impossible at the moment to imagine him losing (that is, of course, until he does).

It won’t be a cakewalk for him, though. Punishment is a gifted well-rounded fighter who’s a former #1 contender for Choppy’s Tough School’s heavyweight belt. He was a staple of the beginnings of CTS, as of their first 9 cards, Punishment fought on 7 of them. He’s found victories by both TKO and submission in the past, and is certainly a thinking man’s fighter who can change up his plan of attack at the drop of the hat. He’ll certainly need to have his mind running on full cylinders if he stands any chance to win this one.

PREDICTION: Carvalho by 1st round TKO

CO-MAIN EVENT – Featherweight Division – Mamad Mouba, 13-4-0 (8-1-0) vs Paul Teixeira, 7-0-0 (3-1-0)

This may very well be the most difficult to predict match on the fight. Two men who’ve made a name for themselves absolutely steamrolling their competition will face off in a match that any MMA fan would be bonkers to miss.

Despite being two years younger than Teixeira, Mouba (he’s 19, Teixeira is 21) holds a mile long advantage in the realm of experience. A former WC featherweight champ, Mouba took the title from Koba Boyka at WC 3, and held it all the way until WC 21, where he lost it to the current champ Ali Roumani. He put himself on the right track to getting back into title contention, though, by beating Dominic Domain by decision in the fight of the night. He boasts top-drawer boxing, wrestling and Muay Thai ability, and is no slouch at BJJ either, making him bar-none one of the purest all-rounders. Though he certainly knows how to win, he’s certainly not one to rush himself into trying for a finish. Simply put, Mouba very rarely makes mistakes, and if he continues that trend here he may well hand Teixeira his first L outside of the TWGC, as well continue his climb back up the championship ladder.

Mostly everything that can be said of Mouba can be said of Teixeira, albeit to a slightly lesser degree. He’s a great all-around fighter, he knows how to win, and he’s certainly put the WC on watch, with wins over Domain, Anthony Placencia, and Mario Bates. Unlike Mouba, though, he has an eye for submissions and isn’t scared to risk a little to snap one on his opponent. If he finds a window on Mouba and makes it so Mouba can’t take this fight as long as he wants it, well, there may be a new “Real King” in WC.

PREDICTION: Mouba by 3rd round TKO

MAIN EVENT – Light Heavyweight Division TITLE FIGHT – Dieter Von Sprockets, 11-3-0 (4-1-0) vs Hughtavious Mingo, 11-3-0 (3-0-0)

This is the kind of matchup that any company in the world would kill to have main event a pay per view. These are two guys who joined the company around the same time (DVS debuted at WC 16, while Mingo’s first bout was at WC 17) and whom’ve both absolutely plowed through their competition thus far, both going 3-0 in their time here.

The champion Von Sprockets is the sort of guy who, win or lose, is certain to put on a hell of a show. In his 13 career non-QFC fights, he’s been awarded submission of the night thrice and been a part of the fight of the night once (albeit in a losing effort). Von Sprockets is a submission wizard. All four of his WC victories (including two over Skunk Asap, the current WC Super Heavyweight Champion) have come by submissions, his go to being a very lethal kimura. He doesn’t seem to be too spectacular at any one aspect of the fight game, but that’s part of his play. He’s absolutely fantastic and picking his spot and, after finding it, ending the fight within seconds.

It may not be too easy for him to do the same against Mingo, though, as the challenger is an absolute hoss. Of his 11 professional wins, 9 of those ended in the first round, 6 of them being KOs. It’s extremely rare that a challenger comes into a fight the favourite, but it’s almost impossible to think of Mingo as anything else. The pride of West Monroe, Louisiana has all of the talent in the world, and brings the determination along with it. Put simply: Mingo ends fights on his terms, whenever he damn chooses, and it looks to me as if he’ll do just that against Von Sprockets and walk out with the Light Heavyweight Championship.

PREDICTION: Mingo by 2nd round KO – NEW CHAMP!

Great write up, +1

What a win for Hughtavious Mingo. Really didn't expect him to come into his own as much as he has. I suppose in HG I not only underrated him, but the two guys he lost to. Eduardo Massa Alcantara not only stopped James Helm with strikes, but made him submit to them (pre-HG) and also had an awesome 4 fight win streak at one stage. Saintly Fish beat former champ and former contender Rice Aroni and Eirikur Adalsteinn in the tournament after HG so he was an underrated guy as well. Mingo made a huge statement out there and will be far from underrated anymore. DVS is a tough dude, surprised to see Mingo managing to get back to his feet so easily from being taken down.

I can agree with you in the fact of its a lot of Grandmas holding the belts right now. everytime I look at the top of each weightclass I cant help but laugh. To actually think even a fighter like you can be a champ within months is a true testament to this.

When you done sparring with these amateurs and want a real fight hit my manager up. I will be more than glad to give you your first L via knockout. That also goes for ANY of you fighters who think they hot shit as well. I OWN THIS CITY!!!

"Has been" is more relevant than "Nobody" so I'll accept it now :D.

It's smacktalk man, whether you agree with it or not. Don't break the flow! Let him think and say what he wants without your scrutiny every post

I probably should have put my avatar and name in the posts but I was replying in character. Derrick Jon was Highland Games champion so in the "owner character" I was fighting his corner, as 'smack talk'.

Luigi "The Green Plumber" Bates

Courtesy of FighterEliteMMA

Luigi Bates is so far undefeated in his pro MMA career. The 178cm 177lbs welterweight spoke to me recently in an exclusive interview. With two appearances under his belt for New York’s World Combat Championship, Bates admits he’s happy with his winning start yet says it hasn’t been easy.

“It's been a solid start but not an easy start. Both fights have been against tough guys and I am delighted to have my hand raised at the end of both of them. I wanted to put a show on for the fans of WC and get a finish in both but as I said they were good opponents, still I am glad I showcased my stand-up and ground game a bit in both of them.”

The Italian had his hand raised over Cian Cartwright in his debut and more recently Daniel Mosby. Before “The Green Plumber” turned his attention to mixed martial arts, he worked as a plumber with his brother, Mario. They used the business as a way to fund their dream of becoming MMA superstars.

“Mario and I are twins. Yes all brothers fight a lot, growing up we fought a lot, not only with each other but plenty of others. Then again our father made it that way, he was in the Italian Mafia and brought us up like that. We saw a lot of fucked up shit and decided we would put our fighting ability to a better cause.”

“As for the green plumber nickname... Well, my brother Mario (the Red Plumber) and I used to be plumbers and I was always dressed in green and he was always in red. There isn’t much to it.”

With a 2-0 record under his ex-plumbers belt with World Combat Championship, the Roman born all-rounder current sits at #7 in the WCC welterweight rankings but has every intention of moving himself closer to a position in which he can contend for the gold.

“I didn't realise I was number 7 in the rankings for my weight class until you mentioned it... It's ok but expect to see me a lot closer to the top soon.”

When questioned about his choice in starting his career with New York’s #3 ranked fighting promotion, he spent time sharing his respect for the organization and ambition to fight with solid competition.

“I chose WC because it had a lot of depth in the division and decent competition, I dont want to go to some small org where I beat a bunch of cans. To be the best you gotta beat the best. WC is a solid org in good hands and a bright future.”

Bates, 21, has a long future ahead of him. There’s a lot of opportunity for a fighter of his talent at his age, and a lot of time to train and potentially become one of the best.

”I’m still young and have a long road ahead of me. My ambitions are probably very similar to most fighters out there. Earn a title shot, win the title, keep the title. Test myself. Reach my full potential. Be the Best.”

Tony Bullard, a dual title holder with a record of 19-2, is who Luigi would need to beat to be the best of WCC in his division. It’s a tall order for anyone, yet Bates feels Tony may be a little overvalued and whether at the end of his own hands or another’s, the champ’s time is coming to an end.

“Tony Bullard has some amazing power I won't deny it. 19 wins 19 KOs, it’s a little hard to talk down to that. BUT his time is coming to an end. I don't believe he has faced nearly the best in his division and his top 100 p4p ranking is nonsense. The clock is ticking for Tony Bullard, and if it isn't me to dethrone him it'll be someone else really soon.”

Bates is managed by Rory Daly whom he attributes to his success. Training out of London with Daly and the members of R.A.D's Lads gym, he also has the backing of The Cage Cartel and speaks highly of his physical attributes and all-round MMA ability.

“My strongest attributes would probably be my speed, my cardio, my well roundedness and the ability to control the fight wherever it goes. As for my weaknesses it’s hard to tell at this stage, obviously I have plenty of learning and improving to do and many more fights to come so I guess we will eventually find out.”

Luigi Bates is one to watch moving forward. He’s recognized so far for his good takedowns, solid boxing and the lightning speed he uses to out-manoeuvre his opponents and already has a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Although the judges have had their input so far in both his fights, his intentions are clear going in.

“To all the WC fans, I know my fights haven’t been super exciting but I put all I've got into each fight and try to finish every time. Keep an eye out for me and watch my road to glory.” Bates said. “WC welterweight division... Watch out because the Green Plumber is coming to flush you all away!”

Even if Luigi doesn’t live up to his own ambitions, one things for sure, MMA gives opportunities for people of all backgrounds (legit or not so much) to put their energy into something more productive. And sometimes, dreams do come true.

Luigi “The Green Plumber” Bates currently has a fight under offer, so the 170 lbs division and New York’s fight fans won’t have long to wait before seeing this up-and-comer in action in the WCC cage again.

Dick Wad (11-5)

Dick Wad Vs San Terra, how about it boss? Both of us are having a bit of trouble getting a win these days and you know we're both looking to stand and trade. Last time we fought I was champ and this will be a good motivation to get myself back to that level.

With Clinton getting a title shot I guess I can rule that out of the equation. That's quite frustrating but luckily in 3 days time I get to take it all out on Taco Stiffy. I hope he tries to block one of my kicks cause I will snap his "bow" in half.
