Ariel Helwani

Recommended Posts

I agree with every single thing the OP said...

Helwani is a one of a kind interviewer and can only be compared to the likes of Michael Parkinson and others in the golden era of boxing. These types of characters should always be given special privileges because they provide a voice and an in-depth analysis of everything to do with the sport they cover. Nothing sells better than passion.

But of course the UFC and their egomaniac bosses just have to silence anyone who gets too powerful for them.

Somewhere Tito Ortiz is saying 'you've seen nothing yet' ...

I like the fact they got pissed at him for doing Diaz for an hour but not at Diaz, my guess is if they had known Diaz was going to do an hour they wanted it to be with their people so it could be "properly" promoted. What they don't realize is Diaz won't do an interview like that for their corporate shills. Hopefully Ariel keeps it up... this is coming to a head soon though, we haven't gotten that far from the beginning.

As far as letting him back... big whoop. UFC is like a prisoner in a halfway house, you hope for the best and maybe I'll respect them after 6 months of good behavior but deep down it's going to be tough to buck off old ways. I have a choice, do I spend a minimum of 75 bucks for nose bleed seats.. yeah, right now, no.

However, in our opinion, we believe the recurring tactics used by its lead reporter extended beyond the purpose of journalism.

Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, he reports things, wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Lorenzo and Frank may have angry words about how all of this has been handled. Frank wants to buy a NFL team as does Lorenzo from all the murmurings about the UFC sale but I doubt the NFL allows them to own a club after this. This is a quote from a Guardian article I read about a year or two ago.

"Franchises are also forbidden to ban individual members of the regularly accredited media for what is perceived as "unfair coverage" or any similar reason. In the United States, journalists can write what they want without fear of reprisal..."

This will fuck the UFC and considering Ariel hinted at the fact he had been physically assaulted also by the UFC, his treatment when working at Fox etc this all doesn't play well at all for the UFC and has made them out to look like scum with a old school mafia like mentality, not fit for the modern internet world. I think that Lorenzo has really overstepped his mark with this one and he cannot cower behind Dana to take the shots for him, he is eating these ones. Hopefully the NFL top brass tell them to fuck off, they are not fit to be an owner in the NFL and they are left with their money and no franchise to hang their hat on. What they done with the UFC is nothing short of amazing, they basically invented a new sport but with all these stories coming out of the woodwork about how they treated their former fighters and now media members who got them to where they are now, I think it might be best for the trio to take their money and leave the sport before they tarnish it even more.

edit

I also love how a majority of the media has circled around Helwani and stuck up for him. It does go to show his credibility in the profession when your peers are willing to go to bat like that for you.

Yeah, I don't think they expected EVERYONE in the sports world to come out to defend him. I saw a blog post that got it right, we weren't talking about Bisping shocking the world... or Faber taking home yet another ass woupin in a title fight, or Hendo with a brilliant knockout at 45 with moves no one has ever seen. All the press about 199 was them booting out Helwani for reporting something that was 100% correct. So then they toss him... he tweets it out, it picks up momentum and then he goes on his show. It makes the UFC look like shit, especially the fact it got physical and the numerous double speak. This has completely over shadowed fighter talk, UFC 200 talk and who knows what else the UFC wanted to put out. UFC is being seen by many for the first time... and they are looking like cbombs.

That may be the case but Dana said some fucked up things which Helwani wouldn't repeat... that's not Lorenzo, that's Dana. My guess is Dana sees an opportunity to bully and goes for the jugular knowing his bosses got his back.

He still has control of his own actions.

Looks like the UFC has changed tact sending Rogan after him. Rogan says he(Helwani) was warned not release because the UFC was going to ruin peoples lives. Don't really think I believe Rogan that much.

And if you watch MMA Hour Helwani brings up the whole run it by us thing.... that Bret guy from ESPN just prior to 199 asked Dana if they were negotiated with Brock for a fight at 200... he lied to his face. So in Helwani's eyes (and makes sense) why bother running shit by you if you are just going to lie or explicitly say don't report.

Rogan has major credibility with the MMA world, so I think he has asked the PR team what the script is and that is what he was told by them. Rogan has been vocally against Reebok and if you read into the rumours its a major sticking point to why his contract may not be renewed. I won't put the blame on Rogan, he is just saying what he was told and put his opinion on it but I think its clear now that the UFC has fucked up in a major way.

It was that bad that on Rich Eisen's show he told Ariel he did not want to discuss anything about the UFC, that they do not deserve that sort of publicity after what they did to him. Rich Eisen is also the face of the NFL Network, good luck Lorenzo in your purchase of a NFL team with that sort of media criticism against you. The media well and truly went to bat for Ariel and won.

The NFL saw the Ray Rice tape & did nothing until it was released & the public outcry was so awful. Greg Hardy actually played this year. I would say the Fertitta brothers would fit right into NFL ownership tbh lol

Owning a casino will keep them from getting a football team far more than having ridiculous policies towards the media. It's not like this is the first time they have banned media from covering their events.

The NFL and the other major pro-sports leagues have never wanted to be linked to gambling, that's why Vegas doesnt get any major league teams.

Adam Silver wants to be linked to it so maybe that mindset is changing? It sounds like there is a good chance Vegas is getting a team very soon but it's not like this is the first time it's ever come up so I'll believe it when I see it. I'd rather they just stay w/ the UFC. It's real easy to think that anybody can just take over and keep it at the level it's sustained but tell that to the guys who used to own it. Or the guys who have owned Strikeforce or any of these other MMA orgs that end up going under or reaching a certain level and then just staying there. I don't have any opinion on this specific matter because I don't give a rats ass about media members or reporters and I certainly don't agree w/ nor like every decision they make. But I love how big this sport and company have grown & I'd rather see it continue to grow then see new ownership and risk it all going south but hey that's just me I guess

Just as I figured, the MINIMUM buy in price to walk into Phillips is 64 dollars with a base ticket charge of 50, it's 108 dollars to get out of the 3XX sections. No UFC... screw you.
