In recent AXF news, up and coming heavyweight Les Norton has reportedly turned down his most recent match up with Australian Extreme newcomer George Howard (5-2) opting to take a hiatus from the fight game instead. When we spoke to the Bondi Beach Bad Boy over the phone he talked about the match up, he talked about being contacted by Howards manager, stepping out of the cage and Louie Depalma as well.

“Yeah to be honest, we thought this was a really bad matchup for us. The guys just coming off a loss and were coming off a win, he’s a great wrestler and right now that’s where I see the hole in my game. If I beat him, which I may or may not have it would be just another nobody I knocked out early in my career. If I lost to him I’d be losing a lot. It was very lose-lose. That’s why we said no.”

“I was told If I didn’t take the fight I’d be put on the sidelines for a while but that’s suits me just fine. Louie’s a great guy and I can understand he wasn’t all that happy about the whole thing but sometimes you just have to do certain things. I’m nineteen and I’ve got the world at my feet. I was way too eager to get amongst things a year ago, I really should have held off and focused on my training. In saying that I’m not complaining, I’m 4-0 and it’s great, although my last fight definitely opened up my eyes. I can’t just rely on my natural talents, I have to look at my game and patch up the holes that are in it, god knows there’s a lot of them. This is what I’m going to do over the next few months. Expect to see a completely different Les Norton the next time I step into the cage.

“We were contacted only a few hours after turning the fight down by Howards manager. He had a few colorful things to say and good luck to him. I know were we stand on this subject and I’m quite happy with the decision. I’m also quite happy to give him my next fight when I come back from my hiatus, that is if he’s still in the company.”

From what we can see it looks as if Norton has decided to shut up shop for a while and protect that unbeaten record of his. He has declared that George Howard will be his next opponent if the fight is available at the time of his return. Will Norton be able to make use of his time away or is he just using it as an excuse to duck quality opposition. We can only wait and see.
