Alliance World Championship - Round Six Recap

135lbs

(The Stepdads) Markus Haland vs. Chrollo Lucifer (Cromulent Doom)

(Haland def. Lucifer by TKO (Strikes) at 04:57, Rd 2)

There was a lot going on in this fight between The Stepdads Markus Haland and Cromulent Doom’s Chrollo Lucifer and I must say that I have been impressed by Lucifer’s attempt to execute a more well rounded game plan rather than your typical BJJ centric fighter but in the end it was Haland’s stand up game that set them apart and Lucifer just didn’t have the tools to contend in that area.

With the top spot already secured by YABAI’s Shu Feng Tzeng and his alliance, The Stepdads, already pretty much assured of the #1 seed going into the play-offs, there doesn’t seem to be much to motivate Haland during these last couple of bouts. Still, second place in the group is not guaranteed with Evil Empire snapping at his heels and Haland would probably need another good performance in the final group stage fight to lock it in. He will face The GBU’s Randy Rutherford next and most would consider him a heavy favourite.

It’s not been a bad run for Chrollo Lucifer who’s tournament record now stands at 2-3 and he will certainly not have anything to have been ashamed of should this fight have been his last. He is slated to face Heritage’s AWOL team captain Sergej Tkach but that is very unlikely to take place and with his alliance also very unlikely to make the play-offs it’s looking as though we will in face be saying goodbye to Mr. Lucifer at this point.

(Heritage) Sergej Tkach vs. Evil Empire (Evil Empire)

(Empire def. Tkach by Forfeit)

Points are points and the Evil Empire surely need them and so this forfeit loss by Heritage team captain Sergej Tkach will be most gratefully accepted. Still, I’m sure Evil Empire would have preferred to take his chances in an actual fight but at least he make final preparations for his sixth and final bout of the group stage against FinnFighters Urho Viitake. A tough fight should things end up on the floor but it seems as though Empire has been working on his ground game and seems to have been handed his Blue Belt in recent times. A second place finish is not entirely of the cards should Markus Haland slip up but Empire cannot overlook his next opponent.

Sergej Tkach should have been facing Cromulent Doom’s Chrollo Lucifer but it looks as though he will take yet another forfeit loss and further damning his once well performing alliance. Such a shame

(FinnFighters) Urho Viitake vs. Shu Fang Tzeng (YABAI)

(Tzeng def. Viitake by Sub (Triangle Choke) at 01:40, Rd 3)

A big victory for YABAI’s Shu Fang Tzeng over FinnFighters Urho Viitake to help his alliance catch up with the Finn’s in the overall table. In actual fact, it was Viitake who was well on his way according to the judges scorecards having decisively won rounds one and two. It only takes a brief lapse of concentration against a prolific submission expert such as Tzeng however and that is likely what happened as Tzeng sank in a tight triangle choke to end the bout a little way into round three.

Having already sown up the 135lbs top spot, Tzeng was fighting purely for the pride of his alliance and he would certainly have made them proud with this win. Tzeng has completed his six group stage fights and now awaits to see who his alliance will face in the Play-Off semi-final. Currently it’s very likely that we will see an immediate rematch between these two and after how close Viitake came to taking it, what an intriguing match up that would be.

It’s not been quite the run that Urho Viitake was expected to make and with his tournament record of 2-3 he currently sits in fifth place, quite a way from his second place prediction. He will next face Evil Empire’s Evil Empire who sits in third. A tough fight considering Empire’s much better stand up skills and his ever expanding ground game. Viitake might be considered the slight underdog in this one but overall a bad performance will make no change to the face Viitake will be moving on into the next round.

155lbs

(The Stepdads) Chubby Funster vs. Walter Sobchak (Cromulent Doom)

(Funster def. Sobchak by Sub (Triangle Armbar) at 00:48, Rd 1)

The Stepdads Chubby Funster made sure to get back to winning ways after losing his undefeated tag after his last fight. It was Cromulent Doom’s Walter Sobchak who had the unfortunate task of meeting Funster whilst he was in this determined mood. Sobchak did manage to land a single shot during the stand up exchange and there was a little jostling inside the clinch but as soon as Funster was able to bring the fight to the ground it was only a matter of seconds before he had Sobchak tapping in pain.

Chubby Funster regained the top spot in the 155lbs division from YABAI’s Maximus Furioto but it will mean little as these two will now get the opportunity to face off in their final group stage fixtures to decide who is the real champion at this weight class. Both submission experts though both with different grappling backgrounds this truly will be a fight to watch during the seventh and final group stage round.

A tough run for Walter Sobchak who likely had his last match. He is still scheduled for one final match but that is against long time absentee so Bitch of Heritage. Likely a sixth place finish for Sobchak but with the possibility of fifth should Garth Wader mess up in his final bout. Kudos for Sobchak for gutting it out.

(Heritage) so Bitch vs. Stig Statham (The GBU)

(Statham def. Bitch by Forfiet)

The GBU’s Stig Statham picked up some much needed points for his alliance when he took a forfeit win from Heritage’s so Bitch. With his alliance battling for the fourth and final play-off spot three points go a long way.

Statham has a tough bout ahead of himself however when he faces FinnFighters team captain in the next round. Statham hasn’t been doing bad at all so far and is the fighter to hand the seemingly unbeatable Chubby Funster his first loss. Can he put on another big performance to end the group stage?

So Bitch is scheduled to face Cromulent Doom’s Walter Sobchak but that’s very unlikely to take place meaning that Bitch lives up to his name and will finish 0-6 at the end of the group stage.

(FinnFighters) Digi Box vs. Garth Wader (Evil Empire)

(Wader def. Box by Majority Decision)

A solid finish to the group stage for Evil Empire team captain Garth Wader as he picked up a hard fought victory over FinnFighter team captain Digi Box. Box looked sharper on the feet but Wader must have sensed he could win this fight inside the clinch and in the end his persistence on keeping the fight in that range paid off with two of the three judges awarding him the victory. The last judged couldn’t decide and ruled proceedings a draw.

Box is certain to move into the next phase of the tournament with his alliance but in terms of the 155lbs group, he looks like a good bet to finish in third place. There is a chance he could end up second should he pick up maximum points in his next bout and Maximus Furioto lose by finish in his. Box is set to face The GBU’s Stig Statham and that is by no means a guaranteed victory. Statham has a win over Chubby Funster and could in face leapfrog Box with even a decision win

For Garth Wader it is likely a case of too little, too late as his alliance faces the very likely end of their tournament. 3-3 overall and is likely to end up in his predicted finish of fifth place.

170lbs

(Cromulent Doom) Floki Agard vs. Quanah Parker (The GBU)

(Agard def. Parker by Unanimous Dec)

The battle for bottom was decided here in round six of the 170lbs class and the result was definitely not what was predicted at the start of this tournament. Cromulent Doom’s Floki Agard took a bite out of The GBU’s team captain Quanah Parker and their play-off hopes when he picked up the unanimous decision victory.

Parker has been performing terribly so far in this tournament and yet it was still a surprise to see him unable to handle Agard who has also struggled with the competition. Agard will no doubt be thrilled with the result, as too will his alliance mates as they currently feud and bicker with the The GBU front man Ibrahim Camara.

Agard will fight again in the next round though likely it will be his last of the tournament. He will face Kybeau Ren who is one of Heritage’s few remaining active fighters. No matter the result Agard can be assured of avoiding the dreading bottom spot in the group.

For Quanah Parker, he finds himself in quite a strange position. A guaranteed bottom place finish no matter the result in his next fight against Evil Empire’s Willy Do, there is a strong possibility that Parker will be moving on into the play-offs despite having not picked up a single point in the tournament so far. Should that happen, the potential for a great comeback story is extremely exciting but something drastic would have to click in Parker’s head before that could happen.

(Evil Empire) Willy Do vs. Jesse Ristinen (FinnFighters)

(Ristenen def. Do by Sub (Kimura) at 04:58, Rd 1)

For a brief moment it looked as though Evil Empire’s Willy Do was going to pick up a big victory as he scored some heavy shots on FinnFighters Jesse Ristinen, big enough to open up a sizeable cut but things quickly took a sharp turn as soon as Ristinen was able to counter with a nice double leg and quickly transitioned into a tight Kimura from side control.

The Evil Empire alliance could have really done with some points here but it wasn’t to be. With a record of 2-3, Do is one of the better performing fighters for his team and maintain’s his fifth spot in the group. He has one fight remaining and it is a big one against The GBU’s team captain Quanah Parker. The GBU currently occupy the last play-off spot so this would have to be considered a must win for Do if his alliance are to move on in the tournament. You could also say that a finish victory is also of utmost importance to whittle down The GBU’s seven point lead. Do should be able to do it but fighting against someone like Parker who has nothing to lose at this point is also a dangerous endeavour.

For Jesse Ristinen, he moves to a winning record once more at 3-2 and maintains his third place spot. Though he can no longer take the top place with his last fight, he will have a big hand in who does as he next faces YABAI’s first place Diego Diaz. A finish victory for Ristinen would hand the first place finish to Yaurod Atidibil whilst a loss of any kind would allow Diaz to keep his spot.

(YABAI) Diego Diaz vs. Yaurod Atidibil (The Stepdads)

(Diaz def. Atidibil by Sub (Armbar) at 04:56, Rd 1)

Somewhat of a shock result given The Stepdads Yaurod Atidibils dominance in the tournament so far but not necessarily a surprise as YABAI’s Diego Diaz is no slouch. It was somewhat against the grain however as Atidibil was pretty much having his way with Diaz in the clinch until he was dragged to the mat and caught with an armbar.

The result allowed Diaz to snatch the top spot from Atidibil and now Diaz holds the fate of the 170lbs group in his own hands. With Atidibil having completed his six group stage fights, Diaz will go into his last fight against FinnFighters Jesse Ristenen knowing that a draw or better would guarentee him first. A loss of any kind would see him slip back into second and possibly even third. It should be an interesting scrap between two closely matched BJJ Brown Belts.

205lbs

(Evil Empire) Finn Vernon vs. Gerhard Smakatron (YABAI)

(Smakatron def. Vernon by TKO (Strikes) at 02:51, Rd 1)

After a terrible first half of the tournament it seems as though YABAI team captain Gerhard Smakatron as started to find his rhythm as he picks up a second win in a row this time over Evil Empire’s hapless Finn Vernon.

With the loss Vernon, who is still searching for his first win of the tournament after five fights, remains in bottom place but he will have one final opportunity to redeem himself and jump clear of last place when he faces Cromulent Doom’s team captain Yadeep Singh in his final group stage bout. With both alliances desperate for points and the huge rivalry between them, it goes without saying that this is a huge fight for Vernon. A win would see him move up to sixth whilst a loss would seal his fate entirely.

Smakatron remains in fifth but is unlikely to move much from here. Completely out of the group title picture, Smakatron will face a tough battle as he takes on The Stepdads Hamza Demirovic next.

(The Stepdads) Hamza Demirovic vs. Kake Randelin (FinnFighters)

(Demirovic def. Randelin by Unanimous Dec)

FinnFighters Kake Randelin suffered his first loss of the tournament after being completely outworked and overwhelmed by The Stepdads Hamza Demirovic and his impressive clinch game. After three rounds all three judges scored it 30-27 for Demirovic.

With his loss to Zane Alexander of The GBU in the last round, Demiroivc conceded top spot honours and now fights for a potential second place as his next best finish. He will require Kake Randelin to first lose his fight against Furious Panda whilst Demirovic himself will need to defeat YABAI captain Gerhard Smakatron. Most would have Demirovic as the favourite but he certainly shouldn't overlook his opponent as an easy win.

Kake Randelin will also be disappointed after throwing away the lead in the 205lbs division and handing it over to The GBU’s Zane Alexander. He now sits in second with a record of 4-1 and goes into his last group stage fight against Heritage’s Furious Panda knowing that this is as good as it gets for him in the group. Possibly a tough fight given Panda’s superior wrestling and grappling game but Randelin comes from the more prestigious camp and will likely be the favourite going in.

(Heritage) Furious Panda vs. Zane Alexander (The GBU)

(Alexander def. Panda by TKO (Strikes) at 01:48, Rd 2)

Nothing short of superb could describe The GBU’s Zane Alexander’s comeback after losing his opening round fight of the tournament and then winning his next five fights in a row and all by finish. His latest victory, over Heritage fighter Furious Panda, seals the top spot at 205lbs for him

Zane Alexander has single-handedly carried his new alliance into a potential play-off spot but now must sit by and watch his team mates attempt to seal the deal as we go into the seventh and final round of the group stage. Alexander should be very proud of his performances after his initial loss and to take the top spot in what is arguably the most competitive group of the tournament. He has beaten some great fighters along the way and it will be a crying shame if he is not among the those fighting in the play-off stages.

For Furious Panda, things have started to unravel slightly after a superb start to his own tournament campaign. After an initial three fight winning streak, Panda has now managed to lose his last two and has slowly dropped all the way from first now down to fourth. He has one more fight remaining, a tough match up against FinnFighters Kake Randelin, and will the disintegration of his alliance team mates it looks as though no matter the result, we will be saying goodbye to Panda.

265lbs

(Heritage) Gwart Bartem vs. Markku Innanen (FinnFighters)

(Innanen def. Bartem by Forfeit)

A forfeit win for FinnFighters Markky Innanen over Heritages Gwart Bartem gives him the faintest of chances to snatch the top spot going into the final round of the group stage.

Innanen, now 4-1, currently lags four points behind The Stepdads Bubba Wallace and could potentially force the issue of time spent in the cage should he finish Cromulent Doom’s Anton Gardner AND Bubba Wallace lose by finish in his next fight. This would put both fighters on the same points with the same amount of finishes which means we would tally up the total time of their victories and whoever has spent the least amount of time would be declared the 265lbs champion. Of course this in itself is a long shot as firstly Anton Gardner is currently on a two fight winning streak and looking rather good and Bubba Wallace remains the sole undefeated fighter in the tournament and is carving quite the trail of destruction. Whatever happens though, Innanen will be moving on into the next round with his FinnFighter alliance.

As for Bartem, he has miraculously reappeared and signed on for his final fight of the group stage. He will face off against The Stepdads Bubba Wallace and go in as a colossal underdog in that one. There is a small chance that Heritage could still limp into the next round with only three fighters so a good result for Bartem would go a long, long way.

(Cromulent Doom) Anton Gardner vs. Daffy Duck (The GBU)

(Gardner def. Duck by TKO (Strikes) at 00:14, Rd 1)

Cromulent Doom’s Anton Gardner scored another victory for his alliance over bitter rivals The GBU when he defeated Daffy Duck in rather quick fashion. Two punches was all it took to end the bout with Duck having no chance to put out any offence at all.

A big win for Gardner sets him up for the chance of a second place finish in the group should he defeat his final group stage opponent Markku Innanen. Innanen currently occupies second and a finish win would put them on even points and force us to tally up time spent in the cage. With Gardners tally of quick finishes there is little doubt he would come out on top in that comparison.

For Daffy Duck he, along with team captain Quanah Parker, have been quite the anchor for the rest of their alliance and little looks to be changing as we go along. Duck has now lost his last four in a row with not one of those fights having gone longer than two minutes. Still, he has done enough so far to avoid being in last place however another finish loss against his last opponent, Evil Empire’s Dick Glover, would put him in danger of dropping another spot. As things stand, Duck is currently set to move on into the play-offs with his alliance and if that is the case he is going to have to find a second gear and quickly.

(Evil Empire) Dick Glover vs. Francisco Baroza (YABAI)

(Baroza def. Glover by TKO (Punches) at 04:55, Rd 1)

Some strong rumours persisted after the result of this one that YABAI’s Francisco Baroza was seen injecting something called “Wolf-roids” in the changing room before his showdown with Evil Empire’s Dick Glover. Glover’s team themselves were baffled by Baroza’s seemingly out of nowhere improvements in the cage and were left wondering if for the third time in this tournament they had been cheated something rotten.

This massive injustice had some serious implications for Glovers alliance who had been looking to him to carry the burden of their terrible collective performances like the hero that he is. With a point lost, Glover remains in fifth place with little chance of that changing and with his alliance looking unlikely to move on from here, the tournament faces the tragedy of a superstar such as Glover leaving with them.

As for Baroza, why he started to give a shit about his performances after five straight losses God only knows but he must know that he has made an enemy for life of “Big” Dick Glover. He better watch his back as he moves on into the tournament play-off finals.

(Q) 2 (2) FinnFighters (18-12, Fin Win 16, Dec Win 2, Dec Loss 4, Fin Loss 8 = Points 44)

(Q) 3 (3) Yabai (17-11, Fin Win 16, Dec Win 1, Dec Loss 3, Fin Loss 10 = Points 40)

(Q) 4 (6) Evil Empire (13-17, Fin Win 9, Dec Win 4, Dec Loss 1, Fin Loss 16 = Points 19)

5 (7) Cromulent Doom (12-18, Fin Win 8, Dec Win 4, Dec Loss 4, Fin Loss 14 = Points 18)

6 (4) The GBU (10-19, Fin Win 9, Dec Win 1, Dec Loss 4, Fin Loss 15 = Points 14)

7 (5) Heritage (11-19, Fin Win 8, Dec Win 3, Dec Loss 2, Fin Loss 17 = Points 13)

This weekend saw the final round of the Alliance World Championship group stage and what a glorious finish it was for some. With the overall group table now locked, we have our brackets for the semi-final and all of a sudden, things look a lot more even on paper.

Another winning round for The Stepdads going 3-1. They finish the group stage with a record of 23-6 and some 17 points ahead of their closest rival. Clearly they are huge favourites to go on and win this whole thing from here though they have had a few slip ups of late and this makes them beatable. It would take a momentous effort to do so however as every single one of their team members is extremely capable.

A rare losing round for the FinnFighters who went 2-3 though it was still enough to take the second seeding going into the Play-Off finals. They finish the group stage with a combined record of 18-12 and managed to fend off a late challenge by YABAI to finish with 44 points.

Only three fights for YABAI in this final round and it was unfortunately a losing effort once more. Managing only a 1-2 round, YABAI finally had to settle for the third seed though it was an exciting last push to catch the FinnFighters of which they almost did. 4 points short to finish with 40 overall and a combined record of 17-11.

Much to everyone's surprise it was Evil Empire who managed to steal the final play-off spot with a tournament PB to go 3-1 this round. In truth it could probably be put down more to the collapse of other alliances during these last rounds but points don’t win themselves and the Evil Empire certainly had to scrap for theirs. The finish with a combined record of 13-17 and a points total of 19. Just one point clear of their bitter rivals Croumulent Doom. Glory!

Another big surprise to see Cromulent Doom finish up in fifth place after spending the entire tournament down in last place. They certainly gave it a big effort going into this last round and their 4-1 tally was agonisingly close to getting the job done. One point shy of fourth place in the end. A truly great end to their tournament. They finish with a combined record of 12-18 and 18 points overall.

With fate in their own hands, The GBU couldn’t have fared worse going into this last round and their 0-4 effort was enough to drop them out of the fourth place play-off spot and down two places into sixth. With a couple of bad performers holding them back it was always going to be a tough run for them compared to the bigger alliances but still many would have expected them to be in the play-offs at least. They finish with a combined record of 10-19 and with 14 points overall.

In last place we have Heritage who have certainly had a roller coaster of a season. Initially not expected to play much of a part in the tournament, this opinion quickly changed after some good results in the early rounds. Occupying a play-off spot things quickly deteriorated as one by one their members began to disappear which included their team captain. Leaving only two out of five carry the burden made things impossible and now Heritage find themselves in last place. A real shame as in their final round they managed to go 2-3 with two of those losses being by forfeit. They finish with a 11-19 record and 13 points overall.

PLAY-OFF SEMI-FINALS

(1) The Stepdads (23-6) vs. (4) Evil Empire (13-17)

(2) FinnFighters (18-12) vs. (3) YABAI (17-11)

Good stuff Alfred. Just curious, but can we give out an award for the least valuable fighter of the tournament? We have a clear winner here, single handedly costing his alliance the whole tournament!

You know it! Our self proclaimed manager of the year for 5 years running had a more pathetic showing than BJ Penn did when he came out of retirement lol. Biggest "rofl" in recent MMAT history. Could've won a fight out of principal lol.

At least I finished what I started :)

Last time things didn`t go your way on a tourney you screwed the divisions by rage-sacking your guy:

That was a weekly tourney too, you were going to lose easily 6-7 more fights due to fighting w injuries (16 days) but instead you ran away.

Just like you rage sacked your 15+ projects after I gave you a bunch of beatings last year :) Now, watching THAT trainwreck was fun :)

LOLUMAD?

Difference is I never hype myself up to be the next best thing to happen to MMAT since Humors receding hairline 10 years ago.

Also, you beat me a bunch of times? Lol you know lying works best when it's hard to prove a statement is a lie right? Lol shouldn't you be busy crying in another thread about being kicked out of an Island gym because nobody can stand your pathetic ass? Move along mister "0-6", you got your alliance eliminated, so this thread ain't for you dAwG.

Congratulations to The Stepdads and YABAI who move on into the finals.

It was always going to be tough going for Evil Empire against the might of The Stepdads and a 5-0 routing shows just how tough. We barely scrapped through into the fourth spot (which was a nice surprise as I thought for sure it would have been The GBU) and having not once scored any points against them at all during the group stages, expectations were low. Still, it would have been nice to have gotten one win at least but it just wasn't to be. Must be mentioned that Bubba Wallace remains undefeated and now stands at 7-0.

The other semi-final match up was quite surprising to me. Even though it was pretty close in the group tables, I felt as though FinnFighters were the more consistent and dependable team and that YABAI had a couple of really under-performing fighters. Even more convincing was that fact that FinnFighters had gone 4-1 over YABAI during the group match ups. You could feel a shift in YABAI's performances as the group stage came to a close but never would I have expected them to get the win 4-1 here. Just goes to show how things can change very quickly in the MMATycoon world. Shout out to Francisco Barazo who was getting battered all season but who has really turned things around at the end and actually looks as though he might be a fighter with a future after this tournament.

Evil Empire and FinnFighters will compete to decide 3rd place.

Finals will take place in just over 16 days on 17th June 2020.

Great job as always Albert.

One thing I appreciate from someone is finishing what they started.

This is very important thing in life, no joke. People need to take note.

Looking forward to the next tournament. Man, GBU was really looking forward to dark horsing it in the playoffs.

Hey guys. I'm sorry that there has been no write up for the finals. Very sorry in fact. I just couldn't get it done myself so I commissioned one of the best in the game currently. Unfortunately, I think we've gotten our dates mixed up and I don't think it will be finished until after the event.

I'm really sorry. I am going to try and knock something up right now.
