On Saturday April 14th, eight remarkably promising Mixed Martial Artists from around the globe will showcase their wonderful talents in the Land of the Rising Sun, as the Budokai Tenkaichi Tournament moves on to its second round.
6iHFL42.png
Just four weeks ago, the Japanese crowd in attendance bore witness to the birth of future superstars as all competitors fought on full throttle, a result which caused all first round fights to end before the final bell. Four men were put to sleep, two within a minute. Another four found themselves caught in submission, the quickest being just 18 seconds. The outcomes of round 1 speak volumes as to how exciting, dangerous and promising these young fighters are as they took their first steps towards greatness.
Those young men that made it through to the quarter-finals will no doubt aim to perform once more when they step through the white ropes of the Budokai ring for a second time.

After a long day of various media obligations and promotional meetings leading up to the event this weekend, the fighters and managers alike were invited to an after-party in the heart of Shinjuku. Many beers were drank and many fried foods were consumed leading one to question just how committed some of the men are to their weight-cuts. Like always when there are too many alpha males in one spot, scuffles and arguments broke out with certain fighters having to be separated from one another, although no fists were reportedly thrown.
One fighter who has earned a reputation both inside and outside of the ring in his short career is Terell Ward - the Compton born ruffian - who allegedly left the party early to storm through Tokyo in a possibly stimulate-fueled rampage. When asked about the actions of Ward, fellow competitor Kotoya Hamasaki ignored our reporters and gave no comment. We tried to get in touch with Rei to ask him about the situation but no one had seen him since this trouble began. Rumour has it that the boss chased "Blood Red" from district to district, attempting to bring him back - to no avail.
After a rather embarrassing few rounds of Karaoke, the managers and fighters in attendance parted ways. The break was over and everyone was reminded of the battles that wait in the near future.

poor Rei, this wasn't in the job description
For those that need reminding, the bracket currently looks like:

Tenkaichi Quarter-Finals Match 1

James Cole (2-0-0, 1-0-0 BFF) vs. Kotoya Hamasaki (1-0-0, 1-0-0 BFF)

The first match of the Quarter-Finals lasted less than half a minute, as sprawl-n-brawl Wrestle-Boxer James Cole faced off against Japanese grappler Kotoya Hamasaki. In the first round of the tournament, Cole was matched with another grappler in Ricky Yaa and the fight was one-sided from the bell. Cole battered Yaa left and right before electing to clinch with his opponent, a move which saw him then pull guard and quickly search for submissions - catching Yaa in a tight armbar soon after. By this point Cole had proven he could do it all, and his fight with Hamasaki was one to look forward to. Kotoya has an equally successful start in the tournament as he dominated the expert Boxer Shang Chi, who was leaving behind his larger gloves for those of 4 ounces tfor the first time. The Tokyo-native instantly took his opponent down with ease, slicing through Chang's attempts of defense before taking his back and choking him into near unconsciousness.

These great performances had fans all over the country invested in this match up, and April 14th we finally got to see it. The first punch was thrown by New Yorker Cole, a beauty of a right hand which sliced open the cheek of Hamasaki. This was a sign of things to come. With little to no skills related to striking Hamasaki had no choice but to go for the takedown, the first attempt stopped by a straight right by Cole. The next attempt was thwarted as easily as the first. The third too. By this point Hamasaki was finding himself on the recieving end of nasty counter-shots, after each of his takedowns were being denied with ease. The fifth and final attempt to get the fight to the mat was opposed with a heinous right hand shot that not many men would survive, ending the fight. James Cole was victorious and earned a spot in the Semi-Finals.

Tenkaichi Quarter-Finals Match 2

Langered "Shebang" Hatchet (1-1-0, 1-0 BFF) vs. Lee "The God Fist" Sin (1-0-0, 1-0-0 BFF)

The second match of the Quarter-Finals was between two extremely different fighters as slick Irish Boxer Langered Hatchet was matched up against Lee Sin, another pure grappler from the Land of the Rising Sun. Despite losing on his MMA debut, Hatchet earned a spot in the tournament due to his impressive Boxing career and saw some of this success replicated in the opening round. His opponent was Julio Regueiro, a seasoned Muay Thai fighter with a granite chin. This meant nothing to "Shebang" however, as he smashed the Spaniard in just over 30 seconds, finishing him with a devastating combo. Self-proclaimed "The God Fist" had a more difficult first fight as he took on the counter-fighting Wrestle-Boxer Erik Pedersen. For two whole minutes Lee Sin pressed forward throwing sloppy head-shots at his opponent, missing each one whilst eating counters. It was then the tides turned, as Sin managed to get the fight to ground where he then battered Pedersen with devastating ground and pound.

As these two prepared to face off, bookmakers had Sin as a heavy favourite and those that didn't know why soon found out - it was due to his chin, his power & his expert grappling. The Japanese shoot-fighter feinted a jab into a takedown and his opponent knew no better, leaving the white belt Hatchet on his back in just mere seconds. "The God Fist" began to soften "Shebang" up with strikes before effortlessly advancing to mount and continuing his rain of pain. When the Yokohama native tired of his opponent, Sin attempted an armbar and soon had Hatchet tapping. Now we look forward to a match up of great fighters as Lee Sin meets James Cole in the Semi-Finals.

Tenkaichi Quarter-Finals Match 3

Castor "Thunder" Antonopolous (1-0-0, 1-0-0 BFF) vs. Jackson "Look into my Eyes" Boone (2-0-0, 1-0-0 BFF)

The third fight of the Quarter finals saw two of the favourites to win the tournament come up against each other as Greek Muay Thai specialist Castor Antonopolous took on English powerhouse Jackson Boone. In the opening round of the tournament, Castor was paired up against fellow Muay Thai practitioner Nikki Nix in a one-sided beat-down of a bout that lasted almost 16 minutes. Castor peppered his opponent from distance and bullied him in the clinch showing dominance in all areas that the fight would go before knocking him out. Jackson Boone had no time to waste in his round of 16 bout as he mauled grappler Art Mitcheltree in under a minute. Boone took the fight into the clinch and assaulted the head and body of Mitcheltree until the latter could not take it anymore, forcing the referee to step in. It was performances like this which had pundits picking Boone to win the tournament.

When these two masters of the clinch were set to collide, those in attendance were treated to another dominant performance. To the surprise of few, Jackson Boone demolished his opponent and had complete control of the fight for almost its entirety. Significantly undersized in comparison to his opponent, Antonopolous could do nothing when dragged into the clinch and most of his offense was completely negated. Just over four minutes into the first round, with his gas tank depleted and face swollen, Castor's "Thunder" had left him and the fight was over. "Look into my Eyes" was victorious, and you could see the fire that burned within him as he screamed a victory cry into the camera.

Tenkaichi Quarter-Finals Match 4

Terell "Blood Red" Ward (1-0-0, 1-0-0 BFF) vs. Mark "E" Smith (1-0-0, 1-0-0 BFF)

The fourth and final fight of the second round brought together two of the competition's deadliest submission specialists as colourful personality Terell Ward took on the silent-but-deadly Brit, Mark Smith. Ward was matched up with Russian grappler Boris Matusov in the first round of the tournament in a bout that would see both men almost throwing hands before even making it to the ring. There was a lot of drama leading up to this one but the fight lasted less than half a minute when the time came. At the sound of the bell, Ward hit the mat with Matusov on top. From there it was downhill for the Russian however as Ward instantly caught him in an armbar and forced the tap. The rivalry was over. Smith's start to the tournament lasted over thirty times as long as his match with fellow grappler Android Eighteen only missed the 20-minute bell by 15 seconds. The two constantly searched for submissions (74 in total), transitioning on occasion. Just before the end of the second round, Smith managed to capture Eighteen in an armbar and secured his spot in the Quarter-Finals.

Now with two strong grapplers coming up against each other, eyes were fixated on Terell Ward - and for good reason. The bout opened with "Blood Red" piecing up his opponent on the feet for almost two minutes showing an unexpected development in his Boxing game. Smith had no option but to take the fight to the mat, but Ward found himself at ease there too, fighting off the offence of Smith and throwing up submission attempts of his own. The second round saw much of the same although it ended mid-way through as the thirteenth submission attempt proved to be the final one. Smith's arm was torqued almost out of it's socket and the fight was over to the beat of tap, tap, tap. Now, Tyrwell Ward meets fellow favourite Jackson Boone in a bout that will decide who will make it to the finals.

On the 12th of may, Hayashi's lounge in downtown Tokyo will open its doors thousands of screaming fans as it plays host to the semi-final round of the Budokai Tenkaichi Tournament. With just four competitors remaining of the starting sixteen, we edge ever closer to the crowning of their first ever Welterweight Champion, a title which right now is open for the taking. This weekend, the finalists will be decided.

James Cole vs. Lee Sin
Jackson Boone vs. Terrell Ward

l1D8cm1.png
Earlier this week, BFF held a so called 'Fite Fiesta' in which the company organised a number of festivities open to the public, one of which being meet and greets with the promotions stars - with Light-Heavyweight Champion Bernd Obermueller making an appearance. There were also more hands-on activities such as a boxing seminar hosted by Irish fighter Sean Whelan, and a amateur grappling tournament organised by Larry Wusky. The event attracted thousands of people through the three days it ran, and even made it on to Japanese television.
The closing ceremony saw the final four fighters brought into the ring, lasers and pyrotechnics lighting up the arena as each man made their way down the ramp. At this stage there were no fights and no scuffles as each man knew the stakes of the game. In just a matter of weeks one of these men will find themselves with a new throne and a target on their back.

We at MMAMemedia managed to catch up with Semi-Finalist Terrell Ward after the event for a brief interview.
Q: In the next round you face Jackson Boone, a scary young man with three wins under his belt, two finishes in this tournament so far. What are your opinions on him as a fighter and/or a person in general?
A: Fuck scary, Fuck him as a fighter, Fuck him as a person. I don't care about a win, loss, draw or goddamn murder. I'm here to get paid and get me some of that high gradeeeeeeeee
Q: If you win this weekend, you'll fight for the Welterweight Championship in the finals. How does it feel knowing you're this close to capturing gold?
A: I'll take it as I have each fight. Smoke, fuck and enjoy my time. I ain't no gym rat. Ima fighter. In life, the streets and cage. I ain't interested in training partners, coaches, sparring obsessively like my opponent. I'm here to put on a show, smoke my weed and get paid. That's it.
It was at this point that Ward lost interest in talking to me and set his sights on someone else in the distance.
RiPK8YB.png
We did however manage to catch a word with one of the big bosses himself, Rei amidst all the chaos.
Q: Hey Rei, the last time we spoke was just after Budokai 10 which was an event you felt personally let down by. How has things been since then?
A: It's been good, Budokai 11 was a hit and we crowned our first ever Champion in Obermueller. These upcoming events should be crackers too.
Q: Obviously, this week is the Semi-Finals of the Tenkaichi Welterweight Tournament, what are your thoughts going into it and do you have any favourites?
A: I think all four men have a great chance of getting the win this weekend. All of them are skilled and promising youngsters, and I can't wait to see them perform again.
Q: Final question, about the landscape of 330k. With two orgs already bowing out of the race, how does it feel knowing you're one of the leaders for the ID?
A: Feels right. I've said from day 1 that only us and Konflikt would last, and only they would give us competition, but I didn't expect the others to drop off so quickly. We'll stay at number 1 for as long as I can see though.
Match preview will be posted later on.

Tournament Match 1

Welterweight Division

James Cole (3-0-0, 2-0-0 BFF) vs. Lee "The God Fist" Sin (2-0-0, 2-0-0 BFF)

The first match in the semi-finals is between the mohawk-sporting American James Cole and hometown favourite, Lee Sin. After an impressive finish in the previous round when he quickly dispatched of Kotoya Hamasaki, Cole finds himself riding the momentum of three victories - all coming by way of finish. The New Yorker has proven himself deadly both standing and on the mat, with submissions and knockouts to his name. Similarly, Lee Sin has also shown his varied arsenal winning his two two previous fights by both submission and TKO. Both of these competitors have rightfully earned their spot in the semi-finals and will now fight for the chance to capture Championship gold in the final round.

James Cole is a sprawl n' brawler with solid Muay Thai and grappling skills, especially his Wrestling. "The God Fist" on the other hand has proven to have underwhelming fists, as he is a pure grappler whose striking leaves much to be desired. Both men have earned their blue belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Expect Cole to attempt to avoid the takedowns of Sin, keeping the fight on the feet where he has the distinct advantage. Sin will want to get it to the floor where he has the best chance of earning the victory. Unfortunately for the Yokohama native however, Cole is no slouch on the mat.

Tournament Match 2

Welterweight Division

Jackson "Look into my Eyes" Boone (3-0-0, 2-0-0 BFF) vs. Terell "Blood Red" Ward (2-0-0, 2-0-0 BFF)

The second match of the semi-finals is certainly the one burdened with carrying the hypeload, as all followers of this tournament bite their nails in anticipation at the thought of Bradford's Jackson Boone facing off against Compton-born Terell Ward. Boone has brutalised his past opponents, showing them no mercy as he has picked them apart - especially within the clinch. Both of the Englishman's past tournament experiences have been extremely one-sided as he has dominated without showing any signs of weakness. With two submission of the night awards to his name, Terrell Ward is in a similar boat to his foe this evening, having tapped out both of his past opponents - one in under 20 seconds. Both men were favourites to win this tournament from the opening round and now we finally get to see them collide, and fireworks are guaranteed.

Boone is an incredibly skilled Wrestler that has worked on his striking skills a ton in the past weeks, as he has appeared to have developed respectable Boxing skills going by his social media posts. Terell on the other hand began his career as a BJJ specialist and has earned a brown belt, but he has like Boone, also began to sharpen his striking abilities as of late. In this match I would imagine that Boone will be looking to keep the fight standing as he has the sharper hands than his opponent. We will also see him try to instigate his devastating clinch-game that has been the key to victory in his previous fights. Although not shy to stand and trade, Terell will likely want to try and tie up his opponent on the mat where he can search for submission openings.

These are two great fights between four wonderfully promising youngsters. Those that are victorious this evening will find their names in history books as the two first fighters to challenge for our Welterweight belt.

Good luck to all involved!

BFF 20: TENKAICHI FINAL ROUND

Brief Event Preview

http://www.mmatycoon.com/images/posters/1527108738budo20.png

On June 9th, Budokai Fighting Federation returns to the Hard Knocks arena in Shinjuku for another stacked event, as two titles hang in the balance and a long and gruelling tournament nears its conclusion. Future title challengers aim to build upon their legacy and bright prospects look to climb to contention. Among them, Japanese grappling sensation Lee Sin looks to earn the bronze medal as he meets the brash and violent Terell Ward in a heated battle for third place. Heavy-handed and recently redeemed Heavyweights Ross Kemp and Hayden Renee are also set to collide, as the pair edge ever closer to the top of the division.

Although all of this evening's bouts hold career-defining power, the statement rings truest in regards to the two star-studded Championship matches that headline the event. In one of them, the newly crowned Bantamweight king Satrinpong Thaichenpaew looks to defend his throne from the hungry and undefeated Challenger Mike Hunt. And finally, in the Main Event we will witness the end of the Budokai Tenkaichi Welterweight Tournament as the well-rounded Mohawk-adorning New Yorker James Cole faces off against the terrifying English powerhouse, Jackson Boone.

"After spending more than an year at the gym where Cole is training, all I could say is that guy is a beast. It is so rare to see a young guy with skill so diverse and excellent. Boone is a dead man, whether it will be by a KO or submission, he is a dead man."

As you all know, the Budokai Tenkaichi Welterweight Tournament has come to an end, and a Champion has been crowned. After a gruelling tourney process, James Cole reigned above all, claiming the top spot by knocking out two opponents and subbing another two. He has shown the promise of a future legend and the discipline of a veteran, despite such a short career. Second place was earned by the terrifying Jackson Boone who despite such a dominant run, could not get the victory in the final round. A third place match up saw Terrel Ward secure yet another submission victory and a bronze medal with his name on it. These three men will be awarded with prize money and trophies (in due time). All of the fighters that took part in this competition showed what they were made of, and allowed this tournament to be one to remember for a long time.
