What is a typical salary for a writer?

Not sure. I want to say a starting point is 100k+ per week for above average work but again, I'm not certain. I would shop some samples of your work to the top orgs and go from there. Writers are in extremely high demand pretty much always.

Also, if you're new to the game, you should stick to reviews, interviews and the like. I would advise you to stay far away from previews until you have more experience playing. Good luck!

I've been paid anywhere from $10k/write-up back in the day to $100k/per. It really depends on how many writers are available, how well you write and how consistently you can put out articles, and how well the org is doing. In today's landscape a writer would probably be pulling a minimum of 50k per article.

But yeah it's hard to keep up if you have other obligations during the week. Don't let writing fictional articles become a part time job where you get paid in Tycoon dollars. The burnout rate for writers is high so pace yourself and be honest with the org owner about how much you can put out each week.

I am looking for freelance work.  I am not able to commit to writing full time for an org.

You can see some examples of previews I've written here

I have an example of an interview style piece below:

Interview with Euan Daxton

This coming weekend “The Nicest Guy in MMA”, will headline his second main event, this time for RISE against Muay Thai specialist Mike “Hairy Hunt”.  With Daxton having recently faced a number of changes in his professional career, including a new manager and a new org, I sat down with him and asked him about the realities of the lower rungs of MMA.

“Euan, you are headlining a second time in only your fourth professional fight, how does that feel?”  It was as if a look of confusion crossed his face, and righted itself, like a drunk tramp trying to navigate a staircase.

“It doesn’t really matter where you are in the card, it’s the same job after all.  I have to go in there and try and punch him more than he punches me,” replied Daxton, his scottish accent tinged with canadian vowels.

“You are up against a more experienced foe in Hunt, and you are putting your unbeaten record on the line.  Are you feeling the heat?”

“No more than normal,” said Daxton, “Hunt is a quality fighter, I always enjoy watching him as he is a finisher and that makes for excitement.  It will be a real test and tell me exactly where I am at this point in time.”

“That is very magnanimous of you.”  He smiled at me and nodded.

“Look I’m not in this game to pretend I hate people I’ve never met.  That nonsense is for idiots.  This is a sport and it is about two competitors trying to find out who has the better skillset.  I think MMA has gotten so far away from that in some places it is becoming almost like the WWE.”

“I hear you have a new sponsor.”

“Yes, the fellas at Vegan Gains contacted me and will be sponsoring me for the near future.  To be honest when I first got the offer I thought they were Vegas Gains but that would have been something entirely different instead.  I have to be truthful here, they really do have some kick arse fucking potatoes.”

“Erm…  Right…  Good luck at the weekend.”

“Thanks mate,” said Daxton as he shook my hand vigorously.  As I watched him walk away the thought occurred to me that it really is hard to tell whether he is actually ‘The Nicest Guy in MMA,” or just someone that speaks honestly.  Either way it is refreshing to see in our sport.

If anyone is interested you can contact me through my manager profile here.

Hello, I originally started playing back in ‘18 and have recently returned. I’m looking for freelance writing work to finance my starving teenagers staying locked in a box, living off of protein powder and a dream of one day making something of themselves. If you’d like to help them with this crazy fantasy. I charge 100k for full card (p)reviews, 50k for main card only, and 25k for interviews (or for a press conference, 25k per fighter attending).

if interested, PM here and we’ll work out the details. Also feel free to approach me on discord at:

Obviously there is a shortage of writers in MMAT so we realize we're going to have to up the ante and pony up the $ to make it happen!  But I have to be honest with you, I have to make it happen!  So you're in the driver's seat as far as compensation!

I am looking for TWO or more writers to swap in and out between card previews depending upon how much workload each wants!

Got an idea of what you're worth?...Let's talk compensation and make it happen!  $? Sure.  Custom avatar perhaps?  We can do that! VIP?  Sure, perhaps, if there's a long term commitment thing, I can definitely work that!  Combination of payment options? Yeppers, we gotcha, let's discuss!

So here's what we're looking for...and yes, while I would always love a writer who wants to do the occasional moonlight gig with interviews and such...that's not my main priority at the moment.  Instead, what I really, REALLY need, is somebody who is able and willing to do anywhere from 1-3 "undercard" portions of cards per week. By that I mean the first five fights of a card for 1-3 cards, depending upon how much work you want.  I'll take care of the rest man (or woman)!  You don't even have to format it.  Just write it all up, send it over to me, and I'll plop it into the preview with proper credit given to you as the guest writer on that given card!

And you decide how in-depth or crazy you want to get.  Want do do it RisaRoo or NatiBatti style, basically a short, quippy sorta paragraph about the fight with or without a prediction on the result, do your thing, I'm fine with that!  Or, want to do it on par with my long-winded, blabbering previews?  Sure, go for it.  Something in between?  Yeah man!  Just do what allows you to be happy and comfortable and not burn out, and it's all good!  And depending upon the time spent, we can figure out that whole compensation thing from above!

Here are some extremes to the previews we've had...first, two from NatiBatti and RisaRoo, my actual daughters.  Then, one that is more typical of what I do most times for the fights...

If you're read this far and you're interested...PM me in game and let's chat!!!  Come help make what is (in my admittedly very biased opinion!) one of the most fun orgs in the game even more so!

***********************

First is an example of NatiBatti's little blurbs on fights that she's been providing of late:

Fight #1- Law vs Liee

For the first match-up of the night, we have Tyson Law and Brusse Liee in a middleweight bout. Law has much more experience than Liee, having fought 20 fights in his career and winning over half of them. Nonetheless, it should be a pretty good match as Liee has pretty good skills to combat Law’s. I don’t know much about either fighter, and both of their morales are down about the same amount, so I’m going to pick Law to win this one based on experience and him having just slightly more energy. He will win by submission. Don’t ask me why. I don’t know. I’m not even looking at their fight page right now as I type this sentence.

***********************

Here is a pretty representative sample of RisaRoo's shorter previews from the past.  Again, she didn't have to do the headline intro pieces and formatting, just the paragraph she provided:

Undercard Bout #5: Lightweights

Anti Half Assed v Marchrius Rossi

Risa Roo’s Take:

The last fight I will be reviewing before Hare finally does his job for once is the fifth fight of the night between Anti Half Assed (you look like you half ass your shower routine bro, shave please god damn) and Marchrius "Marco" Rossi. Parents really wanted to make life tough with that first name, huh? Anyone ever pronounce it right on the first try? Didn’t think so, good thing you go by Marco. POLO! Anyway, both of these dudes are coming in with energy and morale, so hopefully this will be an even paced and engaging fight. Rossi is coming off a few losses while Half Assed is coming off a couple wins. We’ll see if one can break the losing streak or one can maintain the winning streak. I’m rooting for whoever has the best hygiene (take a guess who).

***********************

And an example of my previews (Hare and Donkey "Dan"):

Undercard Bout #5: Heavyweights

Thoth Chontamenti v Thiago Araujo

In his interview on “The Lawrence Minute”, Chontamenti talked about how difficult and strong the Heavyweight division at SPPS has become since the days when he was a dominant force in the division.  It’s awesome to see that under his new management team he appears to be energized and has the confidence that he can get back to the top!  That said, he’s absolutely right…this is not your grandfather’s Heavyweight Division at Sucker Punch anymore and the game has changed.  Being extremely skilled just isn’t enough.  You have to have phenomenal skills along with great strategy…and a big time killer instinct!

Araujo has been round long enough at the ripe age of 39 to know that that killer instinct is a necessity!  He’s been at the top, as he was champ for a minute back at CCF early in his career, and he’s also seen enough fights over his career to know about the streaks…both good and bad. There’s no doubt about it tonight, he brings a clear and present danger to the cage if the fight goes to the ground.  He’s a submission specialist with a ridiculous number of wins coming from chokes and twisted up arms!

Chontamenti indicated that his goal is not to mess around with Araujo on the ground. We don’t know if that’s just gamesmanship or if that’s an honest take on this fight.  Given that Araujo has fallen to a fair number of KO’s over his career I’m actually of a mind to believe that Chontamenti’s giving us the honest insight on this one. And that means he’s looking for the KO going into this fight!  I like that.  I like that a lot!

Donkey’s Pick: Chontamenti via TKO (Strikes)

Here’s the thing.  Chontamenti was extremely dangerous on the ground himself early in his career and at the same time has proven over the years that he can bring the BOOM also!  And, aside from his very first QFC test fight, he’s never been submitted.  So unlike Hare, I almost think that while he may not be looking to purposely take this fight to the ground…why would you?...I don’t think he fears that from Araujo as much as he’s letting on!  MMA is a young man’s game and while Chontamenti isn’t young at 29 years old, he’s still ten years younger than Araujo!

Looking for 1-2 writers to handle full time writing for Bellicose.  I would like to have previews done for both events weekly and a week end's recap.  At the very least, I'm ok with the weekly recap to encompass both events.  Let me know if you're interested and how much you want in compensation.  The more you do, the more you'll make.  Up to you how much you would want to take on.

Also looking for a manager to take on the official social media account for Bellicose to help keep a lively atmosphere around the org to help promote manager participation.

Here's a preview I wrote back in 2017:

PREVIEW: SFC 8 ‘FAUTANUA (c) VS. ALMEIDA’

By: Kyro Pack

Two undefeated records: one championship. The first ever featherweight champion in SFC history takes the stage once again on May 27, 2017 at Wild Bob’s Bar in Sydney, Australia. Taulua Fautanua will attempt to defend his title against the submission machine Ricardo "Black Dahlia" Almeida.
Meanwhile, top heavyweights Mark Hunter and Richard Kuklinski seek to battle it out for an opportunity at contention for the upcoming heavyweight title.
Let’s take a closer look at the fights with an analysis and keys to the fight.

SFC Flyweight Championship - Taulua “The Volcano” Fautanua (4-0-0) vs Ricardo "Black Dahlia" Almeida (3-0-0)

THE MATCHUP:
Fresh off a controversial decision against Edgy Brah, “The Volcano” seeks to prove himself worthy of being called the greatest featherweight in SFC to date. He called the promotion out on giving him a big fight, worthy of proving himself to the hardcore SFC fans. There’s a saying, “if you keep knocking on the devils door…eventually he will answer.” Almeida answered the call, and is proving more than confident. Blowing up the buzzfeed of “The Volcano,” Almeida has warned the champion that he is coming for the belt. Fautanua, overly confident in his brown belt faces his toughest test yet, as “Black Dahlia” has finished all of his opponents via submission…in the first round.
Fautanua is no stranger to adversity however. Growing up with two folk dancing parents, he naturally felt at home when he began practicing the martial art of Capoeira. As he begin to learn discipline, he felt it was time to further his training leading to the art of Brazilian jiu jitsu. Trained from a young age of how to fight under a disadvantage, most believe “The Volcano” will feel right at home grappling with Almeida.
That’s where it all may come crashing down. Grapple, grapple, grapple. Both the champion and the challenger have put on grappling clinics in all of their previous fights. The fans, the media, the entire world expects to see an absolute grappling spectacle on Saturday night. But what hasn’t been talked about is that the challenger “Black Dahlia” has an extensive boxing background. His wrestling and submissions have been so dominant, that the casual fans simply don’t have a clue. Almeida knows the spotlight is on the grapple match. Will he keep it standing? Will he look for his first knockout in his professional MMA career? So many questions leading into this fight, it’s truly the championship bout the fans deserve.

KEYS TO THE FIGHT:
Almeida will likely come into this fight aggressive, strong, and confident in every area. He’s cocky and he’s voiced that. But, and that’s a but with a capital “B,” Taulua is the champion for a reason. He’s the GOAT featherweight for a reason. His opponents have thrown everything AND the kitchen sink at him, yet “The Volcano” is our champion. This fight is as close on paper as it gets, it comes down to heart in this, and “The Volcano” has proved his time and time again. Keys for Almeida: Keep it on the feet, land the jab, win a decision. Keys for Fautanua: Put Almeida on his back, ground and pound, win via submission.

Heavyweights – Mark “Angry Tongan” Hunter (4-2-0) vs Richard “The Iceman” Kuklinski (3-0-0)

THE MATCHUP:
Well, here you have it folks. The heavyweight fight the fans have been asking for. The angriest man in the sport taking on the most interesting man in the sport. Mark “Angry Tongan” Hunter comes into this fight off a win, but in the words of his opponent “not so impressively.” Scrutinized for taking what most fans are calling “the easy fight” against Borque Seriaoski with a record formerly of 0-1-0 after losing a tough decision against Somoa Joe, Hunter seeks to prove to his fans once again that he is the baddest man on the planet. His opponent, “The Iceman” will be entering the cage undefeated in three flawless victories.
Richard “The Iceman” Kuklinski, also known by his fans as “the most interesting man in the world” earned his nicknames the hard way. Son of infamous mob hitman Richard Kuklinski Sr., “The Iceman” was said to have been conceived in a prison, begin balding at the age of 12, and is engaged to none other than Chelsea Clinton herself. There’s the interesting part, now “The Iceman” nickname is what has Mark Hunter concerned about this fight. Kuklinski earned the nickname “The Iceman” after earning three consecutive TKO victories in his first three professional fights. He’s considered cold as ice, after having mauled the faces of all three opponents after each of them were badly cut due to the strikes of Kuklinski.
“Angry Tongan” is not to be taken lightly either. He’s angry, and he’s proved it. Becoming the first and only man in SFC history to knockout two consecutive opponents via slam, he’s a nightmare matchup for anyone in the heavyweight division. This will be the third time Hunter enters the ring under Sydney FC.
The vacant heavyweight championship is soon to be crowned, many believe they deserve the shot. This fight could decide who deserves a shot at being crowned SFC heavyweight champion.

KEYS TO THE FIGHT:
Hunter has been a powerhouse in the heavyweight division. Look for him to come into the fight ready for a war. “Angry Tongan” can swing hard on the feet, he can throw a 265 lb man across a cage, and he can break a limb in a submission, but none of that can contest with the viscous punches and elbows of “The Iceman.” Kuklinski likely comes in with a clinch, and as soon as he gets Hunter to the ground, which he will, eventually…it’s only a matter of time before the blood pours as “The Iceman” flings elbows for dinner. Keys for Hunter: Clinch often, land big takedowns, drain opponents gas tank. Keys for Kuklinski: Pick apart opponent with accurate strikes on feet, get the fight to the ground, cut opponent.

Light Heavyweights – Kevin “The Monstar” Handleman (3-0-0) vs Chuck Lesnar (2-0-0)

THE MATCHUP:
Another set of undefeated fighters, one will leave with their first defeat. Both young in their MMA careers “The Monstar” and Chuck Lesnar come into this bout as what most would call a classic striker vs grappler matchup. Handleman, having recently defeated Kanodia in a 3 round war, had a rough turn of events when he came out of the fight injured. Lesnar, believing he is the man with the plan to end “Monstars” streak took to the message boards telling Handleman “Heal up and get back to training so I can whoop you and take your #1 contender spot.” Handleman is healed, the paperwork is signed, and talk is cheap. We are going to find out Saturday night if Lesnar can keep it standing and get the knockout, or if “The Monstar” will claim another victim to his wrestling assault for a contender matchup for the light heavyweight title fight.

KEYS TO THE FIGHT:
“The Monstar” has a game plan, and if he can stick with that game plan, the fight is over. Lesnar coming in as the underdog and talking trash has to prove he can back it up. Too many swings should eventually lead to the takedown. The takedown will lead to a bad night for Lesnar. Lesnar will be coming with a chip on his shoulder. Keys for Handleman: Get the fight to the ground, control opponent on ground, win via decision. Keys for Lesnar: Keep fight standing at all costs, land heavy blows, control gas tank.

Middleweights – Joe Guerrero (2-0-0) vs Skeeter “The Zapper” McGillicutty (2-1-0)

THE MATCHUP:
Warley Alvez made one huge mistake leading up to SFC 4: claiming he would smash Joe Guerrero. One of the most one-sided fights in SFC history took place as Guerrero landed 35 punch combos in a unanimous decision victory over Alvez. The hyped up Guerrero looks to defend his #1 contender spot against unranked Skeeter “The Zapper” McGillicutty. Skeeter comes into this fight for the first time under contract with SFC, and truly his first test in the big leagues. “The Zapper” won his last fight via decision. He holds a well-rounded skill set having come up in a mixed martial arts background, never claiming a specific martial art. Some would say Skeeter is being thrown to the wolves against Guerrero, will McGillicutty be able to prove his critics wrong?

KEYS TO THE FIGHT:
“The Zapper” has one plan in mind, and that’s to get this fight on the ground. Guerrero hits like a truck and threw more combos in his last fight than any of his opponents combined fights. Keys for McGillicutty: Land a quick takedown, advance position, win via submission. Keys for Guerrero: Stay patient, defend the takedown, pick opponent apart on the feet.

Middleweights: Cletus “The Barnyard Mutt” McDonald (2-0-0) vs Jake “The” Dog (1-0-0)

THE MATCHUP:
With a last name like the dog, it’s only fitting that Jake Dog will fight “The Barnyard Mutt” on Saturday night. Both of these guys are young, and new to the fight game. Neither has tasted defeat yet, but “The Barnyard Mutt” looks to secure a victory with a background in Greco-Roman wrestling. McDonald, only 18 years old seeks his second victory in the cage but faces his toughest opponent yet in Jake “The” Dog. Dog, knocked his first and only opponent out cold only 1 minute into the fight. McDonald comes into this fight working full time at an auto mechanic and hopes that with a big win Saturday night, he will be able to train full time at LOD: Ground zero MMA gym.

KEYS TO THE FIGHT:
Though both 18 years old, both fighters come into this fight with two forms of martial arts. For McDonald, it’s Greco-Roman wrestling and BJJ. For Dog, it’s Muay Thai and wrestling. The standup will be in Dogs favor, the ground game likely in McDonalds. Keys for McDonald: Control the clinch, if fight goes to the ground control top position, submission defense. Keys for Dog: Aggressive strikes in the clinch, stay out of opponents guard, win via TKO.
