06/01/10 - Renzo BB Gunnar Nelson signs for UK fight

Icelandic BJJ prodigy Gunnar Nelson (6-0) will commence his 2010 activities with a fight at UK show BAMMA on February 13th, it was confirmed to Fighters Only today. BAMMA (British Association of MMA) is based in London and will be televising shows throughout the year with an eye to becoming the UK’s most prominent non-UFC fight show.

Nelson is a black belt under Renzo Gracie and earned that distinction in just three years, marking him out as somebody to be watched very closely. Aside from training under Renzo, Nelson travelled the world seeking instruction and spend time in Hawaii with BJ Penn, while in the UK and Ireland he trained with SBG black belts Karl Tanswell and John Kavanagh.

Aside from his ground skills, Nelson also holds the distinction of being an Icelandic karate champion and earned the nickname ‘Shotgun’ from a fight report that commented on his style of ground and pound. Instead of launching a barrage of light punches from top position, he likes to create an opening and then “let them have it with both barrels”, was the description.

His opponent Sam Eldson is 2-0 and won an eight-man tournament last year. He is a first dan judo black belt and holds a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The fight - and the BAMMA event - will be screened on Bravo later this year. Bravo is the former television home of the UFC in the UK and is widely available.

First round submission at BAMMA

Feb 14, 2010: Gunnar choked Sam Elsdon into submission 2:30 minute into the first round at the BAMMA (British Association of MMA) show in London last night. Gunnar took the fight to the ground early, mounted and took Elsdon back when he tried to turn to avoid punches from the Icelander. Gunnar then quickly slipped in a rear naked choke and submitted Elsdon, sustaining his unbeaten MMA record.

Elsdon never had a chance...

A quick update about our favorite Icelandic fighter :)

Gunni just competed in his first BJJ Gi tournament as a black belt last weekend. It was the Scandinavian Open BJJ 2009, he won silver in the -88 kg weight class (194 lbs) but I'm pretty sure his natural weight class is 77 kg (170 lbs)

I was just checking out his dad's blog and he's added a few pictures from the match with Monson in the ADCC

How can you not love this picture ?

More pics from the match, check it out

Gunnar is a brown belt, currently training with Renzo Graice. I think he's been doing jiu jitsu for about 3 years.

Sherdog listed him no4 in a list of top ten Euro MMA prospects.

He competed in the ADCC this weekend and beat former ADCC champ Jeff Monson.

Gunnar's natural weight class is 170 while Monson weights around 250.

What do you expect, they probably wrestle freaking wild animals in Iceland. :D

lol epic

Anyways's this guy seems like a beast and only 21, if he's got the heart and determination(+hopefully a chin like Hendo or Cote) he can do a lot in this sport... Of course unless he goes to the UFC and GSP will tear him limp from limp :D

According to Gunni's father, when GSP came to the Renzo Gracie Academy to train in march 2009 GSP and Gunni grappled no-gi.

GSP got the takedown (big surprise right ?) but Gunni got a sweep, landed in mount and kept GSP there.

I'm told GSP was very impressed by his performance...
