Guest
Gunnar is a brown belt, currently training with Renzo Graice. I think he's been doing jiu jitsu for about 3 years. Sherdog listed him no4 in a list of top ten Euro MMA prospects. He competed in the ADCC this weekend and beat former ADCC champ Jeff Monson. Gunnar's natural weight class is 170 while Monson weights around 250. http://sfuk.tripod.com/ADCC%202009%20Prime/DSC_9233.jpg http://sfuk.tripod.com/ADCC%202009%20Prime/DSC_9240.jpg http://sfuk.tripod.com/ADCC%202009%20Prime/DSC_9235.jpg http://sfuk.tripod.com/ADCC%202009%20Prime/DSC_9198.jpg http://sfuk.tripod.com/ADCC%202009%20Prime/DSC_9243.jpg Impressive ? djohn
My intial thought was to post something along the lines of him being great on the ground, but he prolly didn't have any stand-up after training BJJ so hard... then I went and looked at the Website. This kid is phenominal. Standing and on the ground... Anyone else get the impression he has a Fedor-esque demeanor?

K1
How is that physically possible? The kid's obviously an alien.
JimW
He's a bit of a brawler on his feet. Grappling he is a phenom though. He's got a good camp with SBG, but if he really wants to make it to the top he needs better training partners.
Guest
It was only a matter of time... Renzo Gracie awarded Gunnar the black belt Gunnar Nelson was awarded his Black Belt today by Renzo ... Gunnar has demonstrated amazing ability in all areas of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and did very well at the Annual Abu Dhabi Combat Championship. It is this caliber of grappler that we here at RGA are proud to have represent us! Guest
Gunni competed in Pan Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship in New York this weekend. He won gold in his weight class (BLACK BELT ADULT - MEDIUM HEAVY) and he won silver in the open class. There actually wasnt a battle for the gold in the open class as Gunni was to meet a teammate from Renzo Gracie Academy, they didnt want to compete so they flipped a coin and Gunni lost the coin-flip. (Kinda gay, but whatever...) Here is a text I found on Nelson senior's blog page Gunnar Nelson may have come from Iceland and Rafael "Sapo" ("Frog") from Minas Gerais, Brazil. However they said there was no way they would forget they live and train together in Renzo Gracie academy daily basis and face each other for public eyes, even with an important title as the NY No Gi Pan absolute championship of the adult black belt was in the line. Thus, after each one victory over his opponents, they closed out the bracket along with another teammate, Luis Gustavo (Renzo Gracie Newark), yesterday (Sat, Oct 3) at the City College, famous institution located at the upper west side of Manhattan. Renzo Gracie Academy equaled last year result, taking first in the adult division. Soca BJJ took an amazing second whilst Lloyd Irvin got third. http://images.hugi.is/martial_arts/154830.jpg Top 3 in open weight class. Guest
They should have settled who wins the gold by playing rock, paper, scissors, shoot! Other than fighting that is the manliest way to settle a dispute. There can only be one!!!
Guest
I agree, rock, paper, scissors should always be the way to go!
Guest
A quick update about our favorite Icelandic fighter Gunni just competed in his first BJJ Gi tournament as a black belt last weekend. It was the Scandinavian Open BJJ 2009, he won silver in the -88 kg weight class (194 lbs) but I'm pretty sure his natural weight class is 77 kg (170 lbs) I was just checking out his dad's blog and he's added a few pictures from the match with Monson in the ADCC How can you not love this picture ? http://combat.blog.is/img/tncache/700x700/b9/combat/img/gn_jm-12.jpg More pics from the match, check it out
