Thomas "The Tank" Angelo was raised by his grandmother in Benoni, south of Johannesburg. He started powerlifting when he was 16 years old. He was the National Powerlifting Champion from 2012 to 2014 and still holds the raw deadlift record of South Africa at 370 kg. He worked as a bouncer at "The Snake Pit" in Johannesburg and was lured into MMA fighting by Hunter Johnson. Thomas moved to London in 2018 to advance his MMA career.
