PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Boris Volkonof (ranked 2292 p4p, 130 weight class) and Tommy Reed (ranked 2115 p4p, 123 weight class). Reed has chosen Tupac ft 50 Cent - Get Up Remix as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Tommy Reed acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Boris Volkonof!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Tommy Reed!
The judges for this bout are Radbod Blank, Aafke Stam and Patrick Alders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A lazy body kick from Volkonof

and Reed counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Reed controls from within his opponent's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Reed's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Reed throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Reed slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Reed tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Reed is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Volkonof has escaped the position, nice work there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Reed is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Volkonof knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Reed is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Volkonof is surviving well by controlling Reed's body position as best he can.

Reed lands a big shot there that rocks Volkonof but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

Volkonof is rocked!
Reed is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Volkonof can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Oh Volkonof is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Reed tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Reed pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Reed working his ground and pound in the gym. So far it seems to be working well.
Volkonof really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Reed trying to control but Volkonof is having none of it.
Volkonof is desperately trying to improve his position but Reed has a good base and remains in mount.

Volkonof has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Reed.
Reed looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Volkonof throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Volkonof doesn't manage to clinch there - Reed circles away.

and Reed counters with a nice double leg into side control. Volkonof won't be happy with that.

Volkonof is fighting to break Reed's control of his arms but Reed is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Reed is on top in guard.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Volkonof looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Reed trying to control the position from guard on top but Volkonof is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Volkonof lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Volkonof is looking to pass into half guard but Reed pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Reed is in guard.

Reed is working Volkonof over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Tommy Reed showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Well, if Reed is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Reed is looking for a kimura but Volkonof is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Reed to get the leverage.

Reed is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Volkonof has his hands clasped together around Reed's back. He's all about the action.

Reed in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Volkonof tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Reed!
